FIRST TIME WATCHING: Sherlock S1E1!!
Added 2023-09-14 16:01:08 +0000 UTCWoohoo! IT'S TIME FOR A NEW SERIES!!
So far, I'm enjoying this show a lot already. It's a lot funnier than I expected and I can't wait to dive into more episodes with you all. For those who are watching along with me, I'm watching this on Amazon Prime.
Until the next one, take care and stay golden!

God, it's been close to a decade since I watched a Patreon reactor censor the source material that they're reacting to and make their paying viewers watch it on another site, often at an extra cost and with all the hassle of having to sync it up. I don't know anyone who still does this. It's shameful.

2024-05-25 10:22:05 +0000 UTCAs you know, the series is based on the Victorian era books by Arthur Conan Doyle, but the stories are narrated by Watson, a journal in the stories and a blog in the series, Watson was an army doctor in both, both got wounded in Afghanistan, in both opening stories, the bad guy was a cabbie.
Adrian Burchell
2023-11-01 23:41:07 +0000 UTCI too think Martin Freeman is too adorable. Love his Watson!
Bpark
2023-10-24 18:45:12 +0000 UTCYep! And Watson = Wilson. And House lives at 221B. And there's a character named Moriarty (I think in the episode 'No Reason'?). Possible an Irene Adler too.
Juliette
2023-10-17 13:58:12 +0000 UTCThese being 1h30m long per ep, 1 ep should be fine for the youtube version. (and so few eps per season also makes me lean to that idea)

2023-09-22 19:18:51 +0000 UTCSo excited you're reacting to this! There are tons of callbacks to Conan Doyle's stories but you certainly don't need to have read them to enjoy this. The episode titles are usually story titles, or plays on them. The very first Holmes story was A Study in Scarlet, in which Dr. Watson met Sherlock Holmes and Holmes immediately said, "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive." The drunken scratches on the phone were originally on a pocket watch. He sent telegrams rather than texts. Holmes was an occasional cocaine user but he regularly smoked a pipe to help him think. He referred to one puzzle as a "three-pipe problem." And the psychosomatic limp is a nod to the fact that Conan Doyle carelessly referred to Watson's bullet wound being in his shoulder in one story and in his leg in another. The first time we see Mycroft in this, the Conan Doyle fans assume he's Moriarty. And the gaining/losing weight line is in reference to the fact that Mycroft Holmes in the stories is morbidly obese. Can't wait for you to meet Moriarty! It's a performance for the ages.

2023-09-18 19:44:26 +0000 UTCI'd agree with you except the acting in it is exceptional. I remember the first time I watched it I was absolutely riveted by the finale. It wasn't until after it ended that I shook myself out of it and realized how ridiculous the plot was.
Rosanne Stewart
2023-09-18 19:32:45 +0000 UTCI'm sure you know the phrase "No shit, Sherlock!" In Multiverse of Madness, when Dr. Strange is standing in front of that certain group, a certain lady shows up. Somebody says something like, "She's here!" Dr. Strange responds with "No shit, genius!" I appreciated the remark even though only a handful of people would get the reference!

2023-09-17 03:00:49 +0000 UTCI love this show so much! So glad you are reacting to it and seemed to really enjoy the first episode. Oh, you said something about Sherlock being like House. House is actually based on Sherlock. That's why House's best friend's name is Dr. James Wilson (a play on Dr. John Watson).

2023-09-16 10:37:20 +0000 UTCOh my gosh, I forgot how much I used to love this show! What a walk down memory lane, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Also, I loved that you immediately grabbed your phone during Sherlock's deductions, I'm pretty sure the entire fandom felt like he was judging us for trying to plug our phones in in the dark XD

2023-09-16 05:45:53 +0000 UTCTo be fair, there's less of Sherlock than Dr. Who XD

2023-09-16 05:44:47 +0000 UTCI love how Nat is like “Let’s get into Sherlock… no not like that…” Cuz this show has one of the horniest fan bases ever. Just so many people desperate for Sherlock and Watson to kiss.

2023-09-16 04:44:58 +0000 UTCvery happy you like sherlock :D the humor is great and the cinematic style is so diffrent to many other shows. looking forward to the next one :)

2023-09-15 21:03:25 +0000 UTCLol, I have read the complete Sherlock Holmes books before I hit puberty :D I am weird ....

2023-09-15 20:41:29 +0000 UTCLove that you mentioned Dr House. A house is also a home, and the word homes is a homophone of Holmes. The character of Gregory House was created to be a medical Sherlock Holmes, including his deductive reasoning, personality quirks, vices etc. The series is full of other subtle references too.

2023-09-15 20:07:36 +0000 UTCWe get this but not Doctor Who? 🥲
Colter
2023-09-15 18:34:31 +0000 UTCYou should definitely also watch the Sherlock Holmes movies with RDJ as Sherlock eventually. They are very different to this but also great.

2023-09-15 17:01:40 +0000 UTCDefinitely agree on enjoying different adaptations. I think that’s why this character and stories have had such longevity, it’s an interesting IP you can do a lot with! And agreed on Elementary’s Moriarty too, still a gag to this DAY! 😂😮💨

Walter Lopez
2023-09-15 08:37:33 +0000 UTC"He's like House." Dr. House was actually directly inspired by Sherlock Holmes. Which is Ironic because the real life inspiration for Sherlock Holmes was a doctor by the name of Joseph Bell.
James Keller
2023-09-15 06:12:08 +0000 UTCFirst time watching this series myself and its really good wow. Makes me want to continue can't wait to watch the next episode with you as first time watcher myself.

2023-09-15 05:55:56 +0000 UTCFunny thing mentioning Dr House, he's actually based on Sherlock Holmes. His apartment number is even 221B
Carter Nelson
2023-09-15 05:29:37 +0000 UTCBenedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman both play in Hobbit Together, as well as a couple of the MCU films. The trend of them being great actor friends and being in films together started with THIS show :)
LightsCameraJake
2023-09-15 05:18:15 +0000 UTCApparently it's blasphemy in the Sherlock fandom to think Elementary is even in the same league (*eye roll*), but there's quite a bit the CBS series did better. I liked both for different reasons. Agreed about Moriarty. At the same time, I've had fun with different adaptations writing different versions of Moriarty, or in the case of some, hiding them elsewhere in the cast before the reveal. My favorite Moriarty was Elementary's (though yeah, this one is great, as is the one in Enola Holmes).

2023-09-15 05:13:58 +0000 UTCIf this is your first time experiencing Moffat's writing (he was also the Doctor Who show runner 2010-2017) then, yeah, welcome! It's very entertaining. There are times when it creates great television and times when it is...less great. But that's a whole mess I put to bed 6-7 years ago. I'm SURE it's been recommended to you before, but really, if you're up for a fantastic, spooky stand-alone, "Blink" (3.10 of Doctor Who) would be a great Halloween watch. Cumberbatch and Freeman's chemistry is incredible. I also strongly recommend the first two seasons of Elementary (where Watson refuses to be a doormat, which is nice). That is, if you want a comfortable procedural that you don't watch for work. If you have a sick day or something. Yeah the queer subtext is a *very* touchy subject with the fandom because of how Moffat talked to/about fans who shipped them romantically. The only producers who did a worse job interacting with its queer audience members were those on The 100.

2023-09-15 05:06:31 +0000 UTCI liked the episode btw! These are good things!

2023-09-15 04:59:57 +0000 UTCI guess we’re watching Sherlock! Honestly I was always more of an “Elementary” guy, never got into the BBC Sherlock… but at least I can watch for this free on iplayer in the uk 🥳 One cool thing about this show is I’m pretty sure every episode is about individual Sherlock Holmes books (A Study in Scarlet, Hound of the Baskervilles etc), which is why the feature length episodes are justifiable lol Also the quick Moriarty reveal is kinda funny bc he’s really Sherlock’s only ACTUAL “nemesis”, and it’s been adapted so many times by this point that whenever someone mentions a ✨secret evil mastermind ✨ targeting Sherlock it’s ALWAYS Moriarty an nobody’s surprised 😅 they probably just tried to expedite the process to build suspense from the jump
Daniel McGuinness
2023-09-15 04:59:08 +0000 UTCHow'd you like to go mudding?
Thomas Richter
2023-09-15 04:51:19 +0000 UTCYes and House lived at 221 apartment B.
Christopher Gray
2023-09-15 04:14:44 +0000 UTCSadly you will miss some things by not knowing Holmes lore. But still enjoyable. Study in pink is a play on the very first Holmes story Study in Scarlet, where the victim did indeed carve rache, and was trying to say revenge in German. That is why that joke is funny. Although Holmes ignores that as just a mislead in the story.
Christopher Gray
2023-09-15 04:13:41 +0000 UTCWelcome back, Nat! And what better way for you to dive back in with this fantastic series that I've been meaning to watch as well! Was never a fan of the Sherlock characters and books until I watched the 2009 blockbuster "Sherlock Holmes" that starred Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. Very fun movie, great chemistry between RDJ & Law, and very successful in the box office. This BBC series came out a year later & always wanted to check out who played Sherlock the best: Cumberbatch or Downey. LOL! Ironically, both shared screen time in Infinity War and thought it was one of the best of part of that movie. Anyway, pardon the ramble, Awesome reaction to Episode ONE!

2023-09-15 04:11:05 +0000 UTCsherlock is absolutely my favorite thing Benedict Cumberbatch has done.

2023-09-15 02:07:14 +0000 UTCI'd forgotten how much I loved season one of this show. Season two was also fun.

2023-09-14 23:11:49 +0000 UTCThis modernized version of Sherlock has always been one of my favorite series with plenty of re-watchability. Stellar acting performances and clever humor. Plenty of great episodes ahead for Natalie and reactions for us!

2023-09-14 21:52:44 +0000 UTCim so excited to finish this with u since i had to watch the first season for school last year and i havent gotten a chance to finish it :)

2023-09-14 21:36:57 +0000 UTCI would tend to agree about how low the percentage of "good" episodes is; the series is almost entirely carried on the sheer star power and chemistry of Cumberbatch and Freeman (and then the talent of another actor who joins the cast in future seasons, who I will not name to avoid spoilers).

2023-09-14 19:44:37 +0000 UTCI'm very excited that you're back Natalie! :) Very glad that you're feeling energized and ready for this. This is a solid show to jump back into the mix with, so I'm very happy that it's this one! :) This show begins on a very somber note. I didn't remember that bit! I feel that response is totally understandable. When you've been in situations that are so intense going from that to nothing is very jarring. I really enjoy the editing in this show! It's done very well and with intent, obviously. I'm glad that you'll be enjoying the show! This is an amazing one, and I'm very happy that you're finally watching this with us on here. :) You're going to LOVE Sherlock! The character is amazing in this and Benedict Cumberbatch plays this role very well. The character Sherlock is fucking awesome! xD Expect this brand of confusion when watching Sherlock. Expect episodes to play out like this. I love this show so much! xD hahaha, leaving you guessing, wondering. Sherlock's brother is played by such a great actor! He actually does. He does worry for Sherlock quite a bit. Though, not in the same way that you'd expect. hahaha, I guess that he never introduced himself so I'll be taking that bit out, or wait they're introducing him this episode. Good times! It will be joked about FREQUENTLY! This show is amazing fun. :) Also, yeah, it's a very quick but long show. 90 minute episodes but only a few per season. I'm a big fan of this method for this show. I'm glad that you're waiting to put anything up on YouTube. :)

2023-09-14 19:35:03 +0000 UTCYou got a point. I love the characters and the style of the show and I love these two points in every episode. But I do think there are some episodes where i dislike the story they are telling. Strangely enough the first two points can carry those episodes for me. Normaly that doesn't work but here it does. It's a bit like going to a newly opened restaurant with some friends you didn't talk to in a while. The restaurant looks fantastic, the silent music they play fits the style, you are talking about silly stuff and... and then the food realy isn't yours. Not terribly bad but realy not what you enjoy. Anyway the funny conversation continues and when you come home you feel like you had a nice evening. Yes the food, the central part of it all, wasnt good, but you didn't mind. Thats how I feel with the bad episodes of Sherlock.

2023-09-14 18:32:25 +0000 UTCCan't wait to rewatch this. Really enjoyed it whenever I watched previously years ago. So many sherlock shows, I also liked (to a lesser amount) Elementary, which was a more formulaic easy watchn' American tv version that did actually develop some interesting unique bits throughout its longer run.

2023-09-14 17:44:02 +0000 UTCNat, since you're not familiar with Sherlock: he was a coke fiend in the books, hence the nod to a drug problem when the police are conducting a drug search in the flat.

2023-09-14 16:55:10 +0000 UTCThere weren't many episodes, but man, it's wild just how much the quality varied from episode to episode. You basically always had one great one, one good one, and one dud. That said, I still love this show. The theme used to be my ringtone. Also: Pete Holmes has a great spoof (it's on YouTube) of that scene when Holmes and Watson meet, basically shooting down how wild those leaps in logic/deduction actually are.
