On many things your instincts are great. There were some things you got right away that I didn't catch till the 2nd or 3rd time I watched through the series. But that is old school. Now days we can just back it up and watch the scene as many times as necessary to understand the info overload. Very enjoyable watch along.

2024-04-05 08:03:25 +0000 UTCHouse's only friend is Dr. James Wilson, and I always thought that his name being Wilson and his relationship with House was a reference to Wilson in the movie Castaway and Wilson's relationship with Tom Hank's character.

2023-12-30 10:15:39 +0000 UTCI know I'm late to the party, but here was the plan: The government collected deceased persons from all over the country, and then put their bodies on the plane that the terrorists were planning to blow up. That way they could allow the terrorists to blow up the plane, while nobody would actually die from their act of terrorism. The terrorists would think they had succeeded, and the government would be able to continue to conceal the fact that they had infiltrated the terrorists' network.

2023-10-14 17:41:49 +0000 UTCNat! Need to watch yourself some James Bond, girlie. Then you'll understand the 007 references. Important part of pop culture and movie history too. Not all, just from GoldenEye with Pierce Brosnan all the way through to the last Daniel Craig. Highly recommend.

2023-10-06 05:19:37 +0000 UTChe got to irene because he's sherlock, and he told her to run because he wanted her to run...like run away, from her executioners. while he kills and/or distracts them.

2023-10-06 05:08:30 +0000 UTCFun reaction, Nat! By the way, there's a special stand-alone episode of Sherlock called The Abominable Bride that you may want to react to as well, it aired AFTER season 3.

2023-10-06 03:55:15 +0000 UTCHolmes/House.... damn it. anyway my main exposure to Sherlock Holmes prior to this show was the Holodeck eps of Star Trek TNG and the animated series "Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd century" where watson was a robot and thats about all I remember.

2023-10-06 03:38:01 +0000 UTCI'm just glad the "Mind Palace" hasn't gotten too elaborate yet at this stage...

2023-10-06 02:35:44 +0000 UTCThe crime I never understood till this viewing was the Hitchhiker death. I always assumed he was assassinated with the boomerang! Never picked up that: HE WAS THE ATHLETE and accidentally killed himself because of the backfire. Obvious really... Previously I just thought that it was a stunt orchestrated by Moriarty to get Sherlock's attention. The scenario still doesnt make much sense... why did this Professional Athlete go alone to the middle of nowhere? Doesnt anyone care about this guy?? Wouldn't he have brought additional boomerangs?!?!
George Baxter
2023-10-06 00:11:51 +0000 UTCAgreed; this episode balances the dynamism with the nonsensical much better than in season 3 & 4 but still shows some of the signs of later doom... Eventually Moffat gives up trying to explain 'genius' and just expects the audience to roll with the nonsense. But its a fun ride
George Baxter
2023-10-06 00:07:42 +0000 UTCSurely the DNA would show that all of the people onboard were reported dead months or even years earlier?? And then the families would tell the media that their relatives died of natural causes... Not a great plan!!
George Baxter
2023-10-06 00:04:50 +0000 UTCNat saying shes never looked at Benedict Cumberbatch as sexy is foreshadowing this episode lmao

2023-10-05 23:47:51 +0000 UTCYou shouldn't feel bad about not understanding the trick with the plane right away, it actually doesn't make any sense when you think about it. The relatives of the dead people already knew they died previously, like the kids and the nephew with the ashes. So who was Mycroft trying to fool? It would never pass any kind of scrutiny. Besides, you don't need a plane full of dead people, it's not like the terrorists are going to personally comb throught he wreckage. You don't even need to blow up a plane, not really. Just print a headline, "plane with people exploded somewhere above the ocean", the government can feign outrage and the terrorists think they were successful. This show has a lot of good things going for it but the longer it goes on the more nonsensical it gets.

2023-10-05 23:37:56 +0000 UTCI enjoy watching you react to something I have already seen. The anticipation of your reaction to a surprise/big reveal makes re-watching shows so worthwhile.

2023-10-05 22:52:41 +0000 UTCDefinitely my favorite episode of the entire run of the show. Yes, the original stories were told from the point of view of Watson and Watson started publishing them in The Strand Magazine, which is where the actual stories appeared. A number of clients found Holmes because of Watson's stories. There were a bunch of plays on Doyle titles at the beginning of the episode. The Greek (Geek) Interpreter, The Speckled Band (Blonde), and when Mrs. Hudson finds a ziploc bag full of thumbs in the fridge, that's a reference to The Engineer's Thumb. The original story with Irene Adler was A Scandal in Bohemia. The king of Bohemia was about to be married and hired Holmes to retrieve a photograph of him with Irene Adler, an American actress. Holmes discovers the location of the photograph with the same trick (pretending the house was on fire) and he planned to return later and break into the hidden safe. But Irene figured it out, followed him home dressed in male clothing just to confirm his identity, and took off. She left a portrait of herself in the safe along with a letter to Holmes promising not to blackmail the king. The king was satisfied and the only payment Holmes asked was to keep the photograph. He only referred to her afterwards as The Woman, in respect for the only person to ever beat him. The update made her a dominatrix (about as scandalous now as an American actress would have been back then) and gave her far more sordid doings than just a brief affair with royalty. The original Irene was simply an intelligent, independent woman who had no time for the wishy-washy king who was embarrassed by her.
Rosanne Stewart
2023-10-05 22:45:08 +0000 UTCWhy is it gross? Yes, he beat her in the end, but he has mad respect and obvious feelings for her. He clearly considers her his equal. I thought it was a magnificent ending. Nat called it a match made in hell. I thought it was a scene made in the cinematic heavens. The actress, Lara Pulver, only comes back later in one brief Sherlock scene, sort of like her tiny scene in the Tom Cruise movie, "The Edge of Tomorrow," a role that was obviously cut down to virtually nothing.

2023-10-05 22:27:53 +0000 UTCGreat episode, the hat is iconic of something previous Sherlock Holmes would wear.

2023-10-05 22:08:23 +0000 UTCThink this is my favorite of the whole bunch...completely agree that this episode felt like a whole season of a very spectacular show. Good shit.

2023-10-05 21:06:58 +0000 UTCI wanted to see which was the highest rated Sherlock episode on IMDB and I saw that there is an unaired Pilot. I just skipped through it and it's kind of hilariously bad in comparison to the actual episode. Maybe it would be interesting to see your reaction to that as well ?
Morschois
2023-10-05 20:48:41 +0000 UTCYou got there in the end, Nat! π The people on the plane were already dead! The βhundreds of casualties, but nobody dies.β line Iβm guessing is referencing how the βtragedyβ of the plane exploding would unfold on the news, with hundreds of reported casualties and the terrorists would think they were successful - allowing the British to continue monitoring their coded messages without sacrificing a plane full of living people x
Daniel McGuinness
2023-10-05 20:25:00 +0000 UTCDid you get a haircut? Whether or not you did, your hair looks amazing. A few things: The titles of the episodes and John's blog posts are puns of actual original Sherlock Holmes stories. A Study in Scarlet becomes a Study in Pink, The Greek Interpreter is the Geek Interpreter, etc. The woman at the beginning is supposed to be Kate Middleton. This aired a less than a year after the royal wedding. So yeah, the release of nude pictures of her (and the idea that she was queer and/or not sexually satisfied by her husband/the future king) were something the palace would absolutely want to keep underwraps. What I *don't* like about this episode is that the entire point of Irene Adler is that she beat Sherlock Holmes. Hence her saying, "the woman who beat you." And then, obviously, he is the one who trumps her in the end and saves her life in the coda. Which is just...incredibly gross to me. (in the S1 finale of Elementary, on the other hand, Watson is the one who takes her down).

Baggie Mark
2023-10-05 19:06:32 +0000 UTCSo just to tie this aspect up, the purported gambit by the US/UK intelligence agencies was to let a "terrorist attack" happen (with the casualties all staged using dead people) so that the terrorists don't find out that they've gathered the intel. However, Moriarty tells the terrorists that the agencies know which flight it's supposed to be, so there's no sense in going through with the operation. And, of course, he texts Mycroft to gloat. So you got it!
Michael Ford III
2023-10-05 18:33:25 +0000 UTCCan anyone explain why Nat had that strange sad face during the intro theme music? Was it supposed to be what us Brits look like lol

2023-10-05 18:32:38 +0000 UTCI was always a Marvel kid growing up so I had no idea that Catwoman and Joker were introduced in the same issue. That's wild, and yeah, that totally makes sense. Batman is the "world's greatest detective" so he's obviously got some Sherlock in him, while Catwoman/Irene is the morally grey love interest and Joker/Moriarty is the arch-nemesis.
Jeff K
2023-10-05 18:22:39 +0000 UTCNat, this is only slightly related, but do you know who one of the most random Sherlock experts in the world is? Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He's written multiple novels centered around Mycroft, and if you were ever wondering why he's playing Among Us with Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion, that's why.
Jeff K
2023-10-05 18:21:16 +0000 UTCI'm pretty sure the Sherlock-Irene relationship had a direct influence on the Batman-Catwoman dynamic. Which is weird cuz this show has a direct link with her & Moriarty, while Catwoman's 1st appearance was the same issue as Joker's 1st appearance. In both cases it's like they're both soulmates to the hero except the actual female character is just wild & fun while the male character is just the absolute perfect foil & pure evil.

2023-10-05 18:14:13 +0000 UTCThis is my very favorite episode of Sherlock. The rest are fine, but this one is by far the best for me. The only part I wondered about is how John and Mycroft both missed Sherlock being absent long enough to go to Karachi and back. But then I guess Sherlock, being an addict, does sometimes disappear for days at a time. (Book John would sometimes have to go to the local drug dens to drag book Sherlock off a pipe or drug induced slumber. )

2023-10-05 16:05:55 +0000 UTCHappy Birthday Nat! ππππ₯ Have an amazing day on your mountain trek π Looking forward to watching along to Sherlock today. Your intro today was as wacky as ever Nat, and your outro was almost a play on the Knives Out finale π This was a fun episode with plenty of twists to keep you guessing. Mycroft is played brilliantly by Mark Gatiss, who is co-creator of this show, and he has written and appeared in many other television shows. Really fun reaction today Nat. Cheers π
