Which Evil Dead movie do I watch?

Ok, as promised, since Evil Dead won the poll....let's decide which one I should watch!

Also, I have a question for those who may know. Does anyone know why the 1981 version of the film listed on Amazon Prime is stating it's from 1983? This is the only version I can find to watch of the original film and am a little concerned if it's accurate or if this is just a typo.

Happy Voting!

Comments

Really, the more Bruce Campbell the better.

Nathaniel Wolf

Its not a very good one

jamie jones

You gotta watch Army of Darkness at some point! That movie was a critical element of my adolescence.

David Sumner

I'm happy you came around on this point.

Anonymous Groucho

That doesn't mean two tits. Evil Dead 2 is by many deadites greater than Evil Dead 1. (Also, I would like to trademark "That doesn't mean two tits" as an insult.)

Anonymous Groucho

I'm really surprised by the voting. I mean... from completionists?

Anonymous Groucho

Clearly the best is Evil Dead 3 : Army of Darkness :-D

David Bourgeois

I honestly like evil dead 2013 the most . hahah

Edgar

But yes, if you only have one shot to shoot ED2 is the one to watch. It’s perfection.

lorenzo penco

Yes I agree but I think ED1 has his own identity and if you are on board it can be a lot of fun in a different way than the rest of the series.

lorenzo penco

I just think her reaction to the second movie will be so much more interesting if she watch the first one first, and I believe she will think so too. The minute long remake/recap in the beginning of the second does not at all capture all of what the first movie is. Skipping the first one - while the worse movie - will make the reaction altogether less interesting.

Tomas

It’s pure low budget gross out horror without the humor that every other movie is known for. I like the movie don’t get me wrong but I want Nat to watch Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, and if she watches Evil Dead 1 she’s not going to have an idea of the tone of the rest of the series

Jason Gillman

What does Evil Dead 1 have to dislike?

lorenzo penco

Haven't enjoyed the few Evil Dead movies I've seen so excited to finally watch the original and see if that can do it for me

Danishprince

No it isn't. 2 is a direct sequel that was forced to make changes due to various issues. Bruce Campbell said so himself.

Ashley

Assuming Nat would even care to watch more even if she likes ED1. This is why she should start with the reboot/ remake with the intended budget Sam Rami was looking for. IF she goes in with the better quality knowing the reactor she is, more than likely she would want to continue.

LightsCameraJake

ED2 is a reboot with the intended budget the director wanted, that is both better in quality and the original all together.

LightsCameraJake

I find the Notebook a much scarier movie

Feipo

My fear is if Nat watches Evil Dead 1 she won’t watch any other Evil Dead movies ever, I feel she will enjoy 2 more and it will be more likely she continues the series.

Jason Gillman

I changed my vote to Evil Dead 2. After watching both films this weekend, I and many others have come to the conclusion that its an amazing reboot that is both better in quality and better than the original all together and therefore she should watch Evil Dead 2 instead. I understand why people were wanting her to watch 2. Its indeed Sam Rami's intended version with the budget he was wanting. Or hell id be fine if you watch them both back to back but dont skimp out on the 2nd film superior film.

LightsCameraJake

No, its meant as a series, sam raimi and bruce campbell said it was meant as a direct sequel but they wanted to do a quick recap for people who haven’t seen the first. But they couldnt get access to footage from the first for ownership rights. So they filmed the recap, raimi wanted to use the whole original cast but they didnt have the budget so they filmed a quick recap with 2 of the characters. So people took it as a reboot cause the whole cast wasnt there. But when you continue the series to the tv show the first movie is definitely canon.

jamie jones

I wonder how many people voted for ED 1 because they have not seen the series and fear they will be left behind or something, It's not like with Terminator and Terminator 2 that second film is sequel, ED 2 is reboot. ED 1 is more amateur movie and ED 2 is reboot made by Sam Raimi with real movie budget as he imagined. Its like choosing early acces game or demo and not actual game that is patched. Sorry if I made any gross mistakes, english is not may first language.

Eryk Klukaczyński

Personal Preferences/Favorites for watch order aside, wouldn't be better to vote for the the movie that will result in the Best Reaction? Ensuring that there are future reactions for us to enjoy, because isn't that really why we are here? Course, your differing opinions are often an educational and enlightening perk. so thanks for that. =]

Taff Lewis

She has said she’s open to watching more Matrix movies, so I think it’s more that she avoids sequels when they’re more divisive or there’s less enthusiasm for them. She watched every John Wick movie despite saying multiple times they weren’t really her thing because people love all of those movies and wanted her to react to all of them. I think if there’s enthusiasm for more Evil Dead, she’ll probably continue the series next October.

Razor Bikini

Evil Dead 2 is the Evil Dead that Sam Raimi wanted to make but didn’t have the budget for. The first one is an interesting artifact and is more gross-out horror (I suspect that’s why so many people want you to watch it) whereas the second one is more over the top fun house horror with a splash of self aware comedy and some of the best physical acting on the big screen.

Byron

I'm so out of wack with the majority of your patrons. Evil Dead 2 is by far the better film but most of your patrons are contrarily voting for 1! Just do both and find out for yourself.

Scott Ward

If you're brave enough watch all 5 Evil Dead films. It'll test you to the fullest . Evil Dead 2 is the better of two.

Robert Barnard

Evil Dead 2 is the better film

Gavin Day

I think the first movie exists as a testament for low budget film making and it's mostly for shock value. The 2nd movie is better made and has some comedic elements as well. This is not me shitting on the first movie. I just like the 2nd one more. It's more enjoyable to watch.

Maxx

man what is goin on, talk to me is the best scary movie of 2023, please consider

Cameron Navarro

Army of Darkness

Nathaniel Wolf

Evil dead rise

Bethany Wright

I think I finally understand Winston Churchill's quote about the argument against democracy.

Essero Eson

Where did nat say shes only watching one evil dead for the duration of her channel?

jamie jones

Evil Dead 2 is essentially just a remake of 1981. 1981 almost made my ears bleed with how annoying the demons are in that film. Evil Dead 2 has a better budget better filmmaking and has the same plot as the first one. If you want to enjoy the movie don't watch the first one

lundimakes

Neither Evil Dead is better or worse they are just different. I voted for the first one because it's a more contained story. The people who are saying it's skippable mean that it is skippable in the context of the trilogy or franchise. If you are intending to watch Army of Darkness and/or Ash vs The Evil Dead then the first movie is not strictly necessary. If you are going to watch an Evil Dead movie, singular, without any commitment or desire to keep going past October, watch the one with the beginning, middle and ending.

Jacob King

Evil Dead 2 is the best and it kinda has a soft reboot/recap of the first movie at the beginning

Peyton Royals

People who prefer ED2 are nuts.

Richard Maurer

Thanks patrons for making the right choice.

Richard Maurer

Nat: "I'm only watching one, you guys, so which should it be?" People: "Both." Also people: "All of them, including ones not listed. Also the TV series, and Bubba Ho-Tep, and also Brisco County Jr. And Burn Notice, but just his bits." (kidding... I think?) So I was talked into watching Evil Dead 2 years ago and then went on to watch Army of Darkness (which to me is the most fun to watch and probably react to, but is potentially confusing just dropped into it without the previous movie.) Then I watched Evil Dead 1, and... didn't care for it, personally. And I say that as someone who's loved nearly everything Bruce Campbell (and Sam Raimi) has done. I think if you're only going to watch one, it might as well be Evil Dead 2, because I think you'll enjoy it more, and Evil Dead 1 is more for the purists/enthusiasts/diehards, in my opinion.

Troy B.

People who are voting for one are nuts

Rey

True but unless a movie is super up her alley or gets tons of views she doesn't tend to use the limited movie slots on sequels (no bond, matrix, IT, nightmare on Elm Street etc) when there's only 5 slots every natmares. I'm not against evil dead 1 but if she's only getting one bite at the apple given her history it should be the most indicative one.

Choof

She wont ever watch 2? Just making things up to try and get your way? Did she personally tell you that? Skipping movies to watch sequels is stupid.

jamie jones

Next natmares we can suggest 2. Her channel isnt going anywhere

jamie jones

Hoping so!

Logan Kerlee

If you're only going to watch one, my suggestion is Army of Darkness. That one's a pure treasure to watch. If you're instead talking about which Evil Dead (original or new version) I'm neutral. I don't really care for either. Army of Darkness has been the movie that I've been wanting a reaction for, for a good bit now.

Logan Kerlee

Just do Spiderman again lol

Kelvin

Evil Dead 2 the effects are way better and I think they give a big recap. Plus Maybe Army of Darkness!

Lovable Lowlife

fuck it, do the 2013 lol. never let them know your next move

Jonah Bertorelli

I truly hope you'll consider watching the trilogy. They are some of my favorite horror movies. But if you're only watching 1, I think you're better off just watching 2.

kikoyito

All you people who voted for the 1st one - do you really think Natalie is going to actually watch another Evil Dead movie? Ever? Of course not! So change your vote to the much better and polished movie, Evil Dead 2. She misses nothing of the storyline, and it will be a much more enjoyable reaction.

Mastervodo

There's no real need to skip to 2 I think. Both are good although a little different from each other

Kelvin

My Amazon Prime shows Evil Dead as a 1989 movie because that's when it was released here. But it's the same movie from 1981 or 1983.

Marcio T

Considering she's only likely to watch one movie (she hasn't and likely won't watch nightmare sequels, f13 sequels, scream sequels for instance) then the answer is clearly Evil Dead 2.

Choof

If you are only going to watch one, watch #2 :)

Adam Doyle

Groovy! Lol

Bret Moore

oy

TokyoLopez

Release dates: October 15, 1981 (Redford Theatre), April 15, 1983 (United States)

Daniel Jones

There is soo much to respect about the first movie it's worth a watch all by it's self. The others are great too, however like all franchise you need to start at the beginning. My vote is for the first one!

Blue Collar Hero

Same! My husband and I met in college when I went to visit a friend at her college and Bruce Campbell was there for an event and I this was the first movie I watched with my now husband. Bruce Campbell literally brought us together.

Lisa Tosti

This will be fun.

JayF

was expecting the 2013 one to be in there

Hernani

Do you take opioids, Nat? You might need some relaxants...

José Amador

Exactly. Skipping films is mind boggling to me.

John Rando

The sequel is basically a remake of the first one. So definitely not a required viewing to watch the first. But it's worth watching the first for sure.

2 Percent

You should watch both in order.

Tomas

Army is part 3

jamie jones

It has a 5-7 min remake/recap of the first one. Thats in no way a reason to skip the first one.

jamie jones

Umm no its not. Its a direct sequel bud. Does a quick 5 min remake/recap at the beginning

jamie jones

Pick the first one. Part 1 is a classic and is what put sam raimi on the map. Skipping to the sequel is just a ridiculous notion. It’s literally a direct sequel to the first. Sure it does a short recap but thats no reason to skip the first. Is the sequel better? Sure. But the first is still awesome. Also the first is a horror, the second is more comedic. So for natmares the horror makes more sense. Then maybe nat can watch part 2 later. Just because empire is better than a new hope doesn’t mean you start with empire. The only way you vote to start with 2 is that you don’t like the evil dead series and therefore just want to skip to the one you kinda enjoy. I assume nats channel will be here for a long time. She can get to part 2 down the road. What would be sweet is doing them both as a double feature though, they’re both only an hour 20 min each.

jamie jones

The film is listed as from 1983 because it was initially only shown in film festivals and those venues until after a favorable review from stephen king they new line cinema acquired the distribution rights and released the movie in 1983

Cole Spooner

"¿Por qué no los dos?"

—thoughtstorms—Keith—

I personally love the second one because of the humor. And Eternal Darkness is hands down my favorite from the series.

Bret Moore

"I'll swallow your soul!" ...."come get some"

Stephen Lewis

i was expecting 2013 choice too .

Edgar

I wonder if we will eventually get up to evil dead (2013) and evil dead rise

Philbo

When you get to the second film, just remember that the first 7 minutes of it are a recap of the first film. Sam Rami did that because when they got around to making Evil Dead 2 he didn’t own any of the footage from the first movie and couldn’t use any of it, so he just shot a recap of the first film.

Patrick Mitchell

I’ve never even seen any of the Evil Dead movies. I’ve just seen Army of Darkness which I guess is in the same universe but I don’t know where it fits in. I thought THAT was the cult classic

John Piazza

Everything we remember about Evil Dead was invented, revolutionized, second-drafted, turned on its head and made horror-film iconic in Evil Dead 2. As the TV fans say, one of the greatest Riker’s Beards in horror history.

Eric Janssen

What most of y'all are not telling Nat is that the second movie is just a remake of the original.

Walter Lopez

Evil dead 2 is what I'd recommend. I think leans more into the essence of what Evil Dead is. Also I think watching the first one almost actively makes the second one more confusing if you do eventually watch both.

ShyFaux

WHY NOT BOTH!?

devin flynn

I agree, I thought the poll would be between the 1981 and 2013 movies

Carsten Froehlich

The first Evil Dead is still a fun, goofy movie, and I think watching II without I, you lose something.

Grune

Say hello to my boomstick!

Dylan Wilson

The Evil Dead (1981) is a low-budget “guerilla-style” horror movie and I respect what Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell achieved… but Evil Dead 2 is the best representation of the Evil Dead franchise, which is why I voted for it instead of the original. Each movie is only 85 minutes long… any chance for a double feature? Watching these movies back-to-back is the best way to experience Evil Dead. No idea why Amazon Prime lists The Evil Dead as 1983, but I checked and it is the correct movie.

Rod Reavern

Army of Darkness

John Piazza

The Evil Dead made its debut in October 1981 at the Redford Theatre which is an atmospheric theatre in the Old Redford neighborhood of Detroit. The theatre opened in January 1928, advertised as "Detroit's most unique suburban theatre," due to its grand design, featuring Japanese and Chinese motifs. This theatre probably meant a lot to Sam Raimi as he is from Michigan. THE EVIL DEAD received its theatrical release in April 1983. Often times films are listed in the year they made their festival premiere, especially with independent films. With studio films that get wide releases the years are always more accurate. At any rate the 83 and 81 are the same movie. See Wikipedia for my references. Huzzah!

Jason Dolan

Release dates October 15, 1981 (Redford Theatre)[1] April 15, 1983 (United States)

Brian's Dog

It was a cult release initially in 1981 being shown in a limited number of theatres, but made it big with a more mainstream release in April 1983. I think it is the same movie Nat.

Darryl Low

This will be a great one to watch with Nat...

Baggie Mark

It’s not a remake anymore. It’s now canonically the 4th film.

djKENTO

Evil Dead 2 just starts with a summary of the first movie, there's no reason to skip the first unless you want only a super condensed version of it.

Brodie Bazo

It opened in 1981 in Michigan and then toured a bunch of festivals and didn’t get a wide release until 1983. Don’t worry. It’s the same film.

djKENTO

I think its just a typo. I've seen a few movies listed on Prime Video with the same issue.

Shaun Bloom

For nostalgic reasons most horror would choose the original. However, as a horror fan myself I can say the remake was done very well.... the special xf are certainly creepier and more graphic.

Wayne

I think you start with the original, just to appreciate it for what it was - which is basically a really, really well done student film that Raimi wanted to be an actual, legit horror. He leaned into the campiness with the later films but watching the original should give you an appreciation of how the series, and Sam Raimy's direction, evolves.

Jeff K

I may have started this churn and I apologize ! On positive side I took my son Mr.17 to a showing of Evil Dead 2 and he didn’t miss the first movie at all. Thank you Alamo drafthouse! (Free plug)

Troymk1

It was a limited release in 81 and wider release was in 83.

Haughtbreaker Nic

A reddit comment in a Google search says that the global release for the film was 1983 so some places will list the release date at 1983 instead of 1981.

Evan

You don’t need to watch the first one if you watch the second since the 2nd one is a remake and sequel to the first one

Daniel Casillas

That's definitely a typo. Also, while Evil Dead 2 is far truer to the half horror half comedy nature of the franchise, the original The Evil Dead is still a solid albeit low budget horror movie with a lot of charm. So my vote is watch the first one, but don't sleep on the second one. In fact the whole franchise is worth it. Especially since you don't really see the classic comical Ash until 2.

Nicholas Sulikowski

Please start the evil dead trilogy with the first part of the evil dead TRILOGY

Ashley

This should include the remake too just in case people are interested in you seeing it
