I can't believe that I have watched this series with you to almost the very end, without recognizing Korra's voice actor! I go way back with Janet Varney: The Thrilling Adventure Hour, and many great appearances on Spontaneanation! That floored me, when i saw her name. The writing has been much much better this season. I'm glad you covered Avatar and LoK, i Never would have watched either of them otherwise.

2023-10-30 21:14:32 +0000 UTCPiggybacking on this to recommend the comics. They go into how the United Republic came to be. It was basically a compromise. They were the earliest of the fire nation colonies in what was originally Earth territory, but by the time the hundred year war ended had morphed into something new. People had formed interracial families and were working together. It didn’t seem right to kick the Fire Nation people out of what had been their homes, but naturally Earth Kingdom people still saw the land as theirs and wanted them gone. Making a new, fifth country was the compromise, but it wasn’t without conflict.

2023-10-30 18:47:37 +0000 UTCA couple of small points--first, the town was an abandonded mining town, nobody was living there, they set that up that the beginning of the episode. Second, Zhu Li didn't build the weapon, Bataar Jr. was the head engineer on it (which is important for the next episodes). She was, just like with Varick, just an assistant, she didn't give them the key to anything. Kuvira's reason for attacking Republic City was actually set up in Season 3, by the Earth Queen: "The United Republic is Earth Kingdom territory." Kuvira won't stop until the "whole" thing is united again, and we saw that in episode 1: there was a small puzzle piece for Republic City on Kuvira's magnet map of the Earth Kingdom. It's one way in which the Hitler comparisons don't quite do her justice, as her ambitious don't actually lie outside, from her perspective, her own lands.
