Although not my favorite movie, I'm not going to rag and complain about it either. It's obviously a movie for women and young girls and not targeted to me or my demographic, so there's really no point complaining about how they portray men. But I'm glad you loved it and found some meaning out of it, even if I found it slightly insulting and annoying.

2023-11-15 05:43:03 +0000 UTCHey there, Natalie. This is a great film. It made me laughcry too, and I enjoyed your thoughts afterward. I was thinking about similarities and differences of experiences of people of different genders, as well as how things change as we age. A lot of what you said resonated. Men face incompatible expectations too, or at least many do. Details differ but the feeling sounds familiar. Your thoughts on comparing ourselves to how we see others – that’s always been part of life for just about everyone, I think. The term I like is “comparing your insides to other people’s outsides.” The internet just puts it on steroids. I’m a man. For a lot of my life I looked like a Ken – not my doing, just the luck of the DNA - but felt like an Allan. Dictionaries could use my face as an illustration for “imposter syndrome.” So I kept doing things I thought would make me feel the way I thought the Kens around me felt, and/or would impress people who were never going to be impressed with me – joined the Marines, made sergeant, became a drill instructor, became an officer, commanded a unit, served twenty years; got married, had kids and was a dad; got a degree, then two more degrees; second career in mental health; got some books in print with a big publisher; and so on, and so on. Nothing worked. No matter how many times I added a new gold star on my forehead, I still felt like the same “day late and a dollar short” me. Now I’m older. I’ll be 65 next week. That makes me the patriarch of my extended family, not that it’s a patriarchy. It’s just that everybody older than me and some that were younger have died. Instead of looking like a Ken, I’m balding and 30 pounds heavier and I use a cane on cold days. Half my joints don’t work right, and I end up in surgery every couple of years; I used and abused my body pretty hard for decades and put some rough miles on it. Waking up involves serious aches and twinges. Over the last thirty years I have, among other things, had to give up a long series of activities, abilities, and the associated identities. Still, I sometimes feel I don’t know what I’m doing and hope the people around me don’t figure that out. The change for the better is that somewhere along the way I got to be okay with all the above. I’ll never look like a Ken again, or go running, or go climbing, or put in a hard workout at a gym, or even get through a day without a fair amount of pain. I’ll never be rich (never wanted to be famous.) I’m disabled now and won’t have a job to identify with again, though I still consider being a Marine part of my identity. Of course, I’m still a father, albeit my kids are in their forties, and a grandfather, and I even have one great grandson. But they all live 800 miles away and are busy with their own lives. Even with making amends, I can’t undo all the stupid, careless, thoughtless things I’ve said and done that hurt people, and at this age that’s a depressingly impressive list. What I can do is make my expectations more realistic and my actions more thoughtful, and practice acceptance and gratitude. So that’s what I try to do. I hope that’s what Barbie and Ken each find their ways to doing. The film’s material about dying was poignant. I’m most of the way to that, too. It doesn’t scare me the way it did for many years, but it will be a leave-taking from people I love, and that’s a loss. I am curious about it, though. You seem aware of some of this stuff younger than I was. I don’t know your age, but you’re younger than my kids. I’ve watched a lot of your reactions, along with those of other folks who also use their brains for more than keeping their spines from unraveling, and some of what you said here was more open and real than anything I’ve seen you say before. That’s a good thing. Introspection is admirable and not fashionable enough – our culture urges us to look closely at our exteriors, not much at our interiors. It takes a certain courage to be open about one’s other-than-stereotypical-Barbie/Ken aspects. I hope your example encourages some others to do the same: it’s an act of service. Keep up the good work!

2023-11-11 06:47:58 +0000 UTCHard agree with the other comments, Greta Gerwin's Little Women is SUCH a good movie to watch around the holiday season/winter. Would love to see your reaction to it!

2023-11-11 04:05:41 +0000 UTC"Sugar Daddy Ken" became the best-selling Ken in Mattel history because so many gay men were buying that particular Ken, just because it appealed to their sense of humor. Mattel stopped selling them, too, once they figured out why they were so popular.

2023-11-08 01:39:53 +0000 UTCThere’s a lot of stories about some of the discontinued dolls, but I think the story behind “Earring Magic” Ken might be the funniest. Back in the 90’s, Mattel sent employees to scout out at the bars and clubs to get insight into what new styles were popular and trendy so they could sell dolls to match. One of these was the infamous “Earring Magic” Ken, who was easily outselling other Kens(and even Barbie in some locations) by a HUGE margin. Obviously Mattel was overjoyed at the financial success…until they discovered why the doll was so popular. It turned out gay men were buying the dolls in record numbers because what they initially thought was just a trendy “necklace” was actually a cock ring on a chain that gay men would wear to bars to signal to other gay men that they were…well…gay. 🤦♂️😂 In a panic, Mattel quickly recalled the doll, and “Earring magic” Ken became a rare sought after collectible that people would pay hundreds of dollars for. I guess it was still the 90’s. A time when Ellen’s show got canceled within a year of her coming out due to advertiser boycotts. And while they loved it’s sales, they were petrified of the religious right catching wind and boycotting ALL Barbie products because of it(good thing that sort of thing is in the past now…right?…😳)

2023-11-06 23:01:12 +0000 UTCYES LITTLE WOMEN. I feel like adaptations of classics are more complicated than people make them out to be. You have to show that you fundamentally understand the material and characters (the 2020 Emma did not), but you also have to bring something NEW to the discourse to justify its existence (the 2005 Pride and Prejudice did not). Greta Gerwig's Little Women does both of those EXTREMELY difficult things. I really can't recommend it more than with the words one of my friends used to describe it: "A quiet little miracle of a movie."

2023-11-06 21:52:35 +0000 UTCthis movie is quite expensive and their's no rent so i have to pirate this movie . WELL i didn't pirated it but i waited 3 months and now i'm watching on 3 february 2024. LOVE THIS MOVIE. love they also go through emotions how men are feeling in this day and age. i love weird barbie and Ken and alan <3 For girls this movie would be much more relevant but even as a men I still Love the message that this Movie trying to convey. 2023-11-06 09:15:38 +0000 UTCi really appreciate your conclusion at the end. i just got around to watching this with you as it's a very important movie to me. greta and margot really wanted ryan as ken and he delivered. margot and ryan would buy each other barbie/ken gifts every single day on set. i'll add to the Little Women recs. with everything happening in the world it's easy to hate humanity. this is two hours where you can really appreciate it. the people-watching scene will kill me everytime.

2023-11-06 01:07:18 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed your reaction for this movie Nat. Your outro and summing up of the film was perfect and so good. I think this movie really struck a chord with audiences going through these challenging times, and people could associate themselves with particular characters in the story. It's a fun movie and also something very different from the continual cycle of films that keep coming out, and I think that's what audiences this year were looking for. Little Women is definitely worth checking out closer to the holiday season. It's a great film and shows another side to Greta Gerwig's storytelling. Thanks for an amazing reaction Nat 💛

2023-11-04 19:36:32 +0000 UTCNo, Nolan just brought it back for a re-release in IMAX on Friday. I don't think he has the greatest business sense. Should have released it to digital when Barbie did to keep up with the Barbenheimer thing.

2023-11-04 10:53:46 +0000 UTCAlso I think "shining" is a reference to the movie the Shining haha you've gotta watch it if you haven't. And the thing I love about this movie is that it really shows that all of us are negatively affected by gender politics. A lot of angry right-wing people focus on the feminist storyline with Barbie in the real world but Ken has just as much of an arc. He needed to learn that not only did he not have to be defined by being attractive and desirable to women, but he didn't have to be defined by ruling the world or being dominant. He needed to love himself for who he is. This is added onto by Alan. He didn't fit in in the barbieland matriarchy or the Ken patriarchy because he found himself to be in between in his identity. And weird Barbie personifies the harm of having to fit a gender ideal in any society to fit in. Even stereotypical Barbie and Ken felt their needs weren't met in such rigid societies. I really do think this movie speaks to so many different experiences. Also, my mom's favorite movie is the Godfather and my dad doesn't like it very much haha

2023-11-04 07:29:47 +0000 UTCGonna have to count this as one of my top favorite Nat reaction! LOL! Fun facts: Ruth Handler was played by Rhea Perlman who's fame was being one of the cast members of the great 80s/90s sitcom "Cheers" & real life wife of Danny DeVito, Stereotypical Ken is played by Scott Evans younger brother of Chris Evans, great cameo by John Cena playing Kenmaid, & can't believe they brought back 90s Matchbox 20 & Spice World song!

2023-11-04 03:49:08 +0000 UTCRogier, I just need you to know that your comment moved me so much. Literally to tears! I’m so happy you could rewatch this movie with me and develop a new appreciation for the story. I also totally understand your connection to Alan. I’ve definitely experienced that lonely feeling of being ignored and misunderstood a lot. It’s hard to let go of insecurities and caring about what others think of you. That was the main message of this movie that I really enjoyed. Thank you so much for sharing and for your kind words!

2023-11-04 03:46:35 +0000 UTCOh also fun fact for this movie. There was a world wide shortage on pink paint cuz so many of the sets in this movie are real. The beach alone took so much.

2023-11-04 03:19:35 +0000 UTCI was a dinosaur kid too. Did you ever see the Dinosaur line that Sanrio/Hello Kitty had in the late 80s/early 90s? It’s such a strong and clean aesthetic. They use some of it in Jurassic Park in the gift shop when it’s visible. I’ve been OBSESSED with trying to find some of it. They had the COOLEST little pencil cases that had buttons that would pop out an eraser tray or a pencil sharpener or a little secret storage thing. Okay I’ve rambled.

2023-11-03 23:21:59 +0000 UTCFirst time I watched this movie, i didnt really liked it, It felt really much like they just tried to please everyone and by doing so they pleased noone. But watching it again with you I started appreciating it more for what it is. I myself have been struggling mentally for most of my life, and I do feel like I can really connect with Alan. Just being that guy that likes to do both things. Ive never been a true manly man and Ive also sometimes felt like I was being Ignored or not appreciated. But im working on myself, and I need to stop letting other people's thoughts on me, define me. Sorry for this rant, haha I just needed to vent somewhere. Loved the Reaction Natalie! BTW you are great, just the way you are. I love that you are Goofy and Empathetic and that you always are honest about how you feel about the things that you watch or do. As a fellow outsider/geek, I will keep supporting you! Your reactions have always been one of the bright spots of my days!

2023-11-03 22:09:25 +0000 UTCIt does not. It disappoints me. I had Barbie dolls when I was a kid because they were the same size G.I. Joe dolls at that time and there was only one Female Joe. (Scarlett) So my mother got me the Doctor Barbie and Ken as well as the Astronaut Barbie and Ken sets so I had a little more balanced team. I am as much a fan of Barbie as any female. I've saved the world with Barbie and Ken. What the ending to this film says to a whole generation of young girls and boys is that Barbie is about female superiority, not equality. It says that the real world is better than the Barbie world because the real world has more equality than the Barbie world. It says that the Patriarchy is okay because there is a mirror version of the 1950's in Barbieland where men are kept down and appeased with a single lower court judge. (Unlike the real world where 4 of 9 supreme court justices are women.) So young girls today can let the patriarchy exist. Barbieland has "balanced it out." It should have ended with the Barbie setting an example of what we want the real world to be, not just an inverted version of what we were almost a century ago.

2023-11-03 18:43:45 +0000 UTCI do feel that the writer/film makers fundamentally misunderstood what Barbie was, a representation of equality. The Barbies learned the wrong lesson from this journey, that BOTH the patriarchy AND matriarchy are bad. I wasn't bothered by this film until the end. It felt like it was being setup for the right lesson, but instead what this film is saying is that women shouldn't have equality, but that those who have power should keep it or take it back by what ever means possible. I also have a bone to pick about the Kens. Every Barbie had an EQUAL Ken. Doctor Barbie had a Doctor Ken. Astronaut Barbie had an Astronaut Ken, Beach Barbie had Beach Ken and so on. Barbie was always about " A woman can do whatever a man can do." not "Women are superior." I also hate that they showed the entire board of directors at Mattel as men. The Barbie division has ALWAYS been run by a woman. (tho I was very happy with Rhea Perlman as Ruth Handler) This can be a fantastic film with a great lesson with a few tweaks. But as it stands, it feels like it does more harm than good.
