FIRST TIME WATCHING: Sherlock S4E3 (and schedule update)

Well, here it is. The series finale. I must say, it was kind of an anti-climactic end for me. But I'm still happy that I dove into this series with you all. I really enjoyed it a lot!

I know you were probably expecting this post on Thursday, as that's when I normally post these Sherlock episodes. However, things got mixed up with travel this week and I actually FORGOT to pack my camera and bring it with me to the east coast. What kind of YouTuber does that?

So unfortunately, that means the content will be a bit sparse this week, while I'm waiting for my camera to arrive. My goal is to film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang as soon as possible (that means I may have it in time for this Friday) and to start Invincible next week.

I'm so sorry for the lower content week, while I get things sorted. Life has been a bit chaotic lately with travel (being a dummy and forgetting to pack film equipment also doesn't help).

Hoping to get back on schedule as soon as possible so the rest of the month can be full of lots of fun videos. Thanks for understanding!

I think the moral philosophy questions that this episode flirted with for the majority of its length was VASTLY more entertaining than any nostalgia-bait, half-unanswered question non-resolution ending. Her murder-room puzzles were like real life variations of the Trolley problem, questions that forced you to choose either an utilitarian moral framework or a deontological one (virtue ethics wasn't even an option in this one). Do you sacrifice one to save the many? Most of us would be FORCED to say yes if hard-pressed into such a traumatic decision.. But what about if that sacrificed one was a loved one? Would you sacrifice your spouse or child to save a hundred innocent strangers? Of course not.. You'd have to be a complete sociopath to do that. I think this episode quite cleverly demonstrates the HARD LIMITS of such a cold-hearted ethical philosophy. We would begrudgingly sacrifice SOMEONE ELSE'S kid to save the many, but we would NEVER do such a thing if our own loved ones were on the line. On the other hand the deontological framework isn't any better with limits. Thou shall not kill is a pretty useful and handy framework for most situations.. But Dr. Watson followed this strict rules based ethics and wound up with two people dead instead of one. By refusing to kill one of them (who gave their permission and practically begged for it might I add), he basically ensured that both of them would die. It was almost SELFISH of him to want to keep his hands clean when he had the ability to save an innocent life but dirty his hands in the process. I thought the moral ambiguities of this episode FAR outshone the lackluster emotional ending to this phenomenal series. Between this series and the Doctor Who revival, Steven Moffat was on his A game... Thank you for sharing your emotions with me Natalie..

This is a series that I really liked when I first watched it but then in retrospect it became clear that so much of it was written purely to yank the audience around and it kind of ruined it for me.

The problem with the later seasons of Sherlock, for me, is that the whole show becomes about (ironically) Sherlock! Even the crimes being committed are because of how important this world seems to think Sherlock is. The writer essentially became narcissistic. Sherlock Holmes (the literary character) isnt meant to be the centre of his universe. A man comes across impossible crimes and solves them. He's enigmatic sure but the world doesnt revolve around him, people commit crimes in spite of him! But this series fell in love with itself and instead of writing believable crimes (non-convoluted) it became more farfetched to meet expectations. Thats how you end up with a secret evil genius sister... its personal, diabolical, criminal and riddiculous...

grrr you keep talking over important dialogue . wait til covos are over

I think Euros's point through each game was to bring out all the emotions from Sherlock that she wanted to feel from him. Putting people that he cares for in danger (possibly out of jealousy). Also, I feel that the reason he fell for her tricks, is because the potential repercussions of calling her out could have fatal consequences (as she proved when she shot David's wife). I'm a huge fan of this show and I'm still holding out hope for another season, despite knowing that it will probably never come. Thank you for your reaction to this series.

You were correct in guessing that fisherman was voicing a character in Diablo 4.

Dainius Gaižauskas

Oh boy, oh boy Nat, Invincible is radder then...a really rad thing. Can't wait.

Keith Jacobsen

Taking a break is never a bad idea especially with how much content you produce. Looking forward to your return. 👍

While I agree that this isn't the best ending for a really good show - I will never get over the Molly/Sherlock scene. It's so heart-breaking and beautifully complicated. I genuinely believe in his own way Sherlock does love Molly but he's so against the concept of feeling that it's one step too far.

not as shooketh as I was haha

she is precious haha

The second DVD made sense in terms of existing - the first one went to Sherlock and not John, if she made one for him she would have made one for John. The content of it however was atrociously written. Out of character, more like narration. Personally think the episode would have ended better if we saw the progress of Sherlock and Eurus playing interconnected with the montage in Baker Street, ending with Sherlock explaining the solution to a case to her, walking out and her saying "wrong", showing that she was coming back to reality and hinting that she would help him in the future (although never being released still). Finale in general wasn't great, they clearly struggled for ideas. I liked Eurus as a character, and I think i'm in the minority that liked the plane being her mind palace. I thought a cooler way to solve the problem of Sherlock having to kill Mycroft or John would be to call back to the Abominable Bridge - Mycroft should have taken the rifle from the previous room, Sherlock should have put the gun to his head and pretended to pull the trigger at the same time Mycroft fired the rifle into the ground, making Eurus think he killed himself.

I do believe that fisherman guy was Dagmir from Game of Thrones; the Iron Born who wasn't an ass Theon.

Chris H

I wasn't a huge fan of this episode. It was done well - I just didn't really like Euros as a character, here. Her as a character just didn't feel right to me. I'm with you on parts of this season not being appealing. My favorite season is the first, it's always a great watch. In the end though, I'm very happy that you watched and reacted to this for us, Natalie! Way darn cool and fun. Looking forward to what's coming next, as always. :)

Time to start true detective

It was an ambitious episode, there was just so much going on trying to wrap up the show. I did find myself liking it more days later after thinking about it. At first thought about how Sherlocks character been more dramatic and emotional didn't make sense. Then I thought about how the childhood trauma Sherlock went though might have been enough to make him close off all his emotion completely at an early age. Mycroft didn't help with his memory thing. I think my favourite character in this episode which is also the most consistent character would be john Watson.

jamesthevampyr

Great reaction! I’m new here so not 100% how everything works, but something to look into reacting could be Blue Eye Samurai. It’s animated but a very good show!

Iliana

I loved how Mrs. hudson was listening to Iron Maiden while cleaning the house

Just a couple things I wanted to say about this episode ( and season ) . I know johns cheating on Mary really messed with you, (me too), but. It was Eurus the whole time. She enslaved an entire prison and could reprogram anyone to do anything. John was basically helpless. But he did "break it off". Not great.. but looking into it deep.. He loved mary more than Eurus could control him. Sherlock and Eurus playing the violin together at the end is the only scene in the entire series that gets me every.. single.. time. My mother has suffered from psychotic episodes since I was 10. When i was 26 ( 8 years ago) she went into psychosis, and never came back out. I wish I had some sort of outlet that allowed me to connect with her. Communicate in SOME way. Any way. I am envious of those that don't understand the power in that scene. But also vindicated by it. All in all, s3 was rough. Wasn't a huge fan of the storylines but it all kind of came together (although a little forced). Resubbed to your patreon to watch this series with you. Really enjoyed it. Thanks Natalie! :)

This season was different mostly as both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch had lots of movie roles, so they had reserved time to complete Sherlock and not leave it as open ending as last seasons

Nat's expectation: "You are dead to me" - Reality: "Oh hey, we're doing Sherlock!" To be fair, I'm having insomnia lately, I wasn't sure what day it is. It's Thursday if you believe it hard enough. Movie tomorrow. I believe. You're not wrong about the episode, and really most of the show. But I've enjoyed this a lot, as I've only ever watched it once when it came out. I'm not sure I'd have ever rewatched it on my own. I didn't even know German Amazon Prime had it until I looked it up for the watchalongs. Well done, you. Happy December-things, too.

Even if not for reaction material especially since the Elementary and the serials would be very long term commitment I recommend them for just general free time enjoyment.

Rob E

Nat I really think you should give the first season of Elementary a shot in some ways it’s a more radical departure from the original stories but I find its depiction of Holmes more inline with his book counter part in that while hes blunt and abrasive with people you can tell he cares about the people he’s helping even if he doesn’t want to show it. Alternatively if you can find them I’d also recommend the old Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes serials from the 80s and 90s. He’s marvellously theatrical. And finally the 2015 film Mr Holmes with Sir Ian McKellen as a 93 year old retired Holmes.

Rob E

Hope you are not too stressed about forgetting your camera, that can happen to anyone. I think it is safe to say that we will be here whenever you are able to make new content. It saddened me to hear that you were kind of scared to read the comments after having voiced your opinion on an episode. I will never understand the need for people to be rude and/or toxic on the internet just because someone has a different opinion or view on something like a movie or series. I for one just hope that a content creator enjoys what they are watching so that they have a good time and are possibly introduced to new things that they would otherwise not have watched by themselves. If it happens that someone does not like a show as much as I did I might be disappointed, but that is how opinions work. I wish you all the best during the holiday season and hope you will have a wonderful time!

exciting just before i leave for my Florida trip! woo

Simon Bauer

No worries, It'll be worth the wait ;) Also glad you finally finished Sherlock and am happy you at least enjoyed the ride. Ending was, erm, weak, to say the least. But! I still think Cumberbatch/Freeman were a fantastic contemporary Sherlock/Watson team and I am glad to have enjoyed their company.

Mike Hell

I am shooketh and absolutely mortified that you would dare to "forget" your equipment when traveling during a hectic period.. That's just so freaking unprofessional and I expected better from you, what am I meant to do now without my daily reactions!!!! booo And because there's without a doubt gonna be some people that won't know I'm joking: You deserve a break Nattie! Relax and enjoy some time off and o need to stress about getting a reaction done for Friday, we'll (hopefully) survive ;) <3

Danishprince

Hi Nat, you never need to apologise to us, we are glad to get whatever you have time to post for us.. Happy Holiday Season..

Baggie Mark

no need to apologize girl shit happens and u prolly really need the break LOL ❤️

Lawson

Aye, fair points.

LightsCameraJake

I think Robert Downeys interpretation of Sherlock Holmes is as far away from the original as Benedict Cumberbatchs, just in another direction. The only difference is the time period. But I do love these movies and find them very entertaining, so I would love to see Natalie react to them one day. 🙂

silverarrow06

Exactly. Hoping someday she will get to them. Both movies I hope.

Navjot Singh

Natalie, I'm gonna be the first to say that you should absolutely watch Robert Downey Jr.s Take on Sherlock Holmes (2009) In my humble opinion, he does a better job a representing the actual classic character of Sherlock from the books, A great film 100% recommend 👌

LightsCameraJake

Happy Monday Nat. Hope you had a good weekend. We'll skip past the events of yesterday. Damn 😢 Don't worry about the mix up Nat. Gives you some more time to relax and that's what matters. We look forward to your video when it's done. It'll be an awesome intro ramble anyway 😊 Sherlock finale time now. You're not exactly selling it to me though 😅 It certainly had it's moments Nat, and the actress playing Eurus gave a chilling performance. Definitely a mixed bag of a season but it's been a fun journey re-watching this series with you. Thanks for an entertaining reaction today and have a great week Nat 💛
