Let's Watch: Shogun E1!!
Added 2024-03-05 17:00:09 +0000 UTCHey folks!
So excited to dive on into this show with y'all. I actually gained a lot from rewatching this episode and can't wait to dive into brand new episodes with you next week.
Apologies in advance if the timer is a little off. For some reason, the timer on Hulu is varying by a couple seconds for me depending on the day I click on the episode.
As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon! Until the next one, take care and stay golden. :)

To give some context Japan and China refused to trade with each other. The Portuguese and their black ship were the only way the two countries would trade. This made the Portuguese extremely wealthy and ingrained in the politics of both countries. Blackthorn and his ship the Erasmus could sink or take prize of the Black Ship and so break the Portuguese monopoly on trade. This is better explained in the book. The show is a very condensed version of the novel Shōgun by James Clavell. In fact this first episode alone covers the first 10 chapters in the book. The book is easily over 1200 pages depending on the printing you get. It’s a great adaptation.

2024-03-11 02:23:17 +0000 UTCThere's a dubbed version ? Why ?

2024-03-10 19:56:52 +0000 UTCNattie has seen it, but she obeys the first rule, as you should too 😄 Good time for a re-watch though. 25th anniversary this year and it's doing the rounds in theatres again just now.

2024-03-07 14:22:39 +0000 UTCThere are definitely small changes from the book. The boiling scene was originally to get cooperation from Blackthorn and the pissing scene was when Blackthorn consented to obey when they were about to boil a second crew member. In this series it was done just as an act of cruelty and curiosity. Makes me wonder what else they will change down the line.

2024-03-06 16:40:03 +0000 UTCI enjoyed this episode a lot, I just wish we'd gotten a bit more explanation of who everyone is, it was a bit tough to keep track. Though it was definitely easier when watching the second time. I've never read the book or watched the first TV adaptation, though my dad has done both and he is enjoying this new version, so that gives me hope that it will turn out well.

2024-03-06 09:30:44 +0000 UTCI didn't know about that - but hey, cool! I haven't seen this - no idea on this at all! Here we go!! It's all good, Ricola it up! I could totally tell that you watched this before! xD You were talking SO MUCH throughout. I'll have to rewatch in order to understand it. xD It's hard for me to do that when you're talking all throughout an episode. :P Normally this isn't an issue for me at all, I just think that it's because it's a show with required subtitles. I totally think that I'll enjoy the show!! I just don't know if I'll enjoy watching a reaction alongside it (for an initial viewing, at least). :) Be well Natalie! Good introduction for this show. I'm definitely interested in seeing more. :)

2024-03-06 09:30:02 +0000 UTCInterestingly, the Japanese being spoken is not modern japanese. Friends in Japan who have seen the show are saying they have to really pay attention because a lot of the language is not common in their everyday language.

2024-03-06 02:58:37 +0000 UTCThe actor who plays Rodrigues (Néstor Carbonell) played Richard in Lost!! 😭 I love him, one of those actors that always turns out a great performance no matter what he’s in! Super stoked for this show, feudal Japan has always been such an interesting point in history for me - and Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend, glad to see him getting his flowers as a lead finally 🥹🙏🏻 I wasn’t ready for the bad soup scene…

2024-03-06 01:29:50 +0000 UTCAbsolutely digging this show so far, glad for the Executive Decision to watch it. I will say, it makes me sad that Blue Eye Samurai didn't win the last show poll, I think you watching it simultaneously with this show would make for an interesting juxtaposition (it's set around the same time period, but in a somewhat altered reality).
