2024-03-12 15:55:55 +0000 UTCIn the books Kashigi Yabushige was often referred to as Lord Yabu or Yabu-Sama so you could get away with just referring to him as Yabu. As for the bath his first one in the village was violently forced on him. He tried to fight back but was subdued and tied up while they scrubbed him and burned his clothes. If you watch in episode one you can see his hands behind his back like they are tied. The book emphasizes a lot more the cultural differences from the English and the Japanese. Much is glossed over since these first two episodes take place over several months. Like the priest in the prison did teach Blackthorne some rudimentary Japanese while the was there. It isnβt really mentioned but you can see that Blackthorne knows a little bit more when he is βfreedβ.

Ishido and Toranaga were both shown stamping documents with their seals. Toranagaβs family coming from the ancient Minowara clan has this worn down very well used seal and Ishido has a much taller new looking seal showing that he does not have an ancient lineage.

I think you are right that you need to watch each episode twice. There's a lot to pick up and take in. I look forward to the next one tomorrow π

2024-03-11 17:54:52 +0000 UTCI love how this show takes its watchers serious. It's showing very understated scenes and trusts that you figure it out for yourself. When John made that remark about "unless I win", there wasn't a big scene or even a reply. Just a very slight, lopsided grin that showed what Toranaga actually did think about it. It's great, especially on a show about polite and deadly intrigue. They wouldn't be able to show anymore in this situation either. And the costumes, direction and acting are all top notch as well.
