Amazing watch. I love this movie quite a bit.

Logan Kerlee

The problem I've always had with this movie is the whole ideology of the teacher. If what he says is true, that a true great wouldn't quit, I'd say that a true great wouldn't need an egotistical asshole to push them either. They'd be great regardless, just my two cents.

Firewalker

If not before, then the line is crossed when someone takes their own life because of the teacher. Art is what makes life worth living for many people, so if someone loses their life because of it, it isn't worth it. Having 5%, 10%, or 20% worse art, but no one takes their life, is 100% worth it.

Jock

Oh where do we see the shortened Youtube version?

I’d love to see you do more of your own thing and not leave things up to polls. I’d wanna see ya do more recent or award worthy stuff. I highly recommend anatomy of a fall, all of us strangers

DP

Talked to my Brother over the weekend, we're both drummers. He said the same. Back on my list, thank you for the encouragement.

I loved this movie when I first saw it. It’s still very effective, and still has a phenomenal ending (something Chazelle always delivers on IMO), but I’d personally rank it on the low end of his filmography. I understand why it’s most people’s favourite tho. I’d really love to hear more about why you didn’t like La La Land, which on the other hand is a film of his that only got better for me each time I revisited it. I think the awards campaign for that movie skewed a lot of people’s expectations in a way that harmed their enjoyment of the film (as a straightforward musical or a love letter to Hollywood, it doesn’t really work, but it’s not trying to be either of those things). Would love to see you revisit it, even if as a hate watch, to get more insight into your thoughts. I do recommend both First Man and Babylon tho. First Man is definitely Chazelle’s most understated film, while Babylon is his most over the top. Both are worth watching for their musical scores alone (another thing Chazelle always delivers on, thanks to his frequent collaborator Justin Hurwitz), plus Babylon has a couple of absolutely perfect scenes even if the movie as a whole is a bit messy. I originally put off watching it for a while because I’d heard a lot of bad things, but I ended up loving it. Either way thanks for the reaction, it was a memorable one for sure, and I look forward to watching another, less stressful movie along with you again soon.

Razor Bikini

The singing and dancing in La La Land was intended to be somewhat amateurish, it was a creative choice. It was an attempt to marry the heightened reality of a musical with a grounded indie filmmaking style, and express the thematic conflict of the film through those clashing aesthetics. If it didn’t work for you that’s fair enough, but you weren’t supposed to be dazzled by the skills of the performers.

Razor Bikini

Shame you didn’t finish it because I think the strongest part of the film is its ending. It’s a pretty stressful watch tho for sure, and I get why it would be too much for some people.

Razor Bikini

I also love hearing reactors talk about movies they hated. Haha I’ve been meaning to get around to watching La La Land. People say they either love it or hate it.

John Rando

Classic film! Glad to see a classic can still be made these days. Great choice Nat!

John Rando

You saw another side of Tenzin lol.

Christopher Henderson

The only good movie that I couldn't finish. What it delivers is awesome, but is not what I watch movies for. Too much, too close to home.

Taff Lewis

Natalie every 5 seconds of the reaction: "I had a ballet teacher like this" "I had a band teacher like this" "I had many teachers like this" "I had art teachers like this" "I had math teachers like this" "Gordon Fucking Ramsey was one of my teachers and he was like this" What kind of shitty schools did you go to where every teacher you had was a piece of shit!? xD

LightsCameraJake

I've been dying to see this movie here! Absolutely incredible film!

Capt. Scott

LOVE this movie. Don't forget to watch a video of J.K. Simmons in an interview or something afterward to remember he's nice. He's a lovely man, but oooh boy can he bring the fire. Also, since I didn't see anyone else bring it up, Miles Teller actually did most of the drumming in the movie. There are only a few close-up shots of super intense moments (I think mostly in the end) where they used a double. The guy is talented!

Slick447

Such a great movie and probably my favourite reaction from you, Nat. So interesting to hear about your experiences. I can totally see that you are a creative, extrovert person. But damn, you did acting, singing and dancing? That's impressive. I'm more of a shy, introverted person and am always a little jealous of people who can express themselves.

Dennis Macko

First time watching this. I'm with you on the stress. I almost stopped about 30 minutes in. My first high school band director was like this guy. He kept a trumpet mouthpiece on his podium just so he could whip it at people who were messing up. Yelled all the time and threw fits. Did the same thing with making us replay some sections over and over. Thankfully, that guy got fired. His replacement was a jazz musician and totally laid back. He introduced me to listening to and playing jazz. My college director was also a jazz musician. Both of them brought joy back into music for me. JK Simmons was really great in this role but the character's whole mindset seems completely contrary to jazz music to me. Great movie but not sure I'll ever want to watch it again.

its the same way as a chef you get stepped on the entire way and it destroys your passion for cooking, but you learn discipline, you earn respect

AJ Lynch

you should check out Babylon I think you would enjoy it

I am a pirate 🏴‍☠️🦜☠️

Thomas Richter

Oh whoops, you're right. I remembered that one wrong. Both really good movies though.

Jules Readner

Only 4 episodes too nat you could knock it out quick

Rey

Easily one of my favorite movies of the 10s

Rey

Speaking of jk simmons, invincible season 2 just resumed…

jamie jones

@Spencer yeah but if you can't make the musical bits fit the standard of excellence of the rest of the movie, like Maddie says about the cinematography, then leave it out or it just feels off. It's like finding a hair in a chocolate cake; still good cake, but ew, a hair.

Who Are These People

One problem with this 'be the best' mentality is that audiences don't really need that. I can enjoy a well-performed 'Miss Saigon' and I wouldn't mind the difference if it's not Lea Salonga. If some Lea out there wants to push herself so far then so good, but if Natalie wants to give us her rendition of 'I Still Believe' on her Patreon I'd love that too. Just do your best, Nat. Who really won at the end? Miles, for taking control, or JK, for the "proof of concept" that he led Miles to that point? They're both crazy.

Who Are These People

Such an amazing, intense movie. I’m not even the slightest bit musically-inclined and I fully gripped/stressed the whole way through 😂 And yeah there’s a huge difference between encouraging someone to pursue/hone their talent, and abusing and belittling people to achieve greatness - and JK Simmons being able to make me understand his methods during that monologue, even for a second, is how you know he’s a fantastic actor lmao I started writing this during the outro and your literally verbalising my thoughts on this movie as I type so I’ll leave it there lmao 😂 A great movie and a hellish experience, thanks for giving me an excuse to rewatch 😅

OMG OMG OMG I voted for this every time it was in a poll

XanderWhat

I really relate to how you describe losing the joy for performing because of teachers. I quit band in high school because of our director.

One of my favorite movies of all time! Just starting the watch now, super excited

Not quite my tempo.

Babylon is one of those movies where I love it so much but I have zero clue who I'd recommend it to lol. It is brilliantly directed and shot, soundtrack was Oscar worthy (same composer as Whiplash / La La Land), the set pieces were also bonkers. There is absolutely zero doubt of Chazelle's immense talent when it comes to his direction and he's not even 40 yet. However, the script needed another run or two through the editing room and is probably the weakest aspect of the movie. It is also very...in your face with it's debauchery lol, if you've ween the Wolf of Wallstreet you'll know. I disagree with the criticism that it's another Hollywood movie about Hollywood. If anything Babylon is almost a suicide note to Hollywood. Apparently Chazelle's next film will be a smaller thriller like Whiplash which I'm absolutely stoked for.

Spencer Wattamaniuk

It didn't win Best Picture, Birdman did. Fuckin' should have won though!

Spencer Wattamaniuk

La La Land is still *phenomenal*. Alsohhhhhhhh; Netflix is pretty much twenty bux a month now. #Piracy4Ever #LickMyTaiiiiiint

Diiirk706

This was the first time I've watched Whiplash, although I did kinda know the gist of the plot going in. I'm not a musician. I'm not a theater person. I don't sing. I don't dance. I don't act. And I was uncomfy through this whole movie as well! I can only imagine how you felt, Nat! There was TRAUMA on your face, girl! You were wound up so tight at times, you were buzzing. I've watched literally hundreds of hours of you now over the last year 1/2, and I've never seen you so upset for so long with no tears! Fantastic reaction today! Clap Clap Clap! NEVER watching this movie again!

Mastervodo

Watched this movie back when it won BP at the academy awards. The second viewing with you was very entertaining and insightful! It was interesting that you could relate so much.

Jules Readner

I have been wanting to watch this for a while but I have been holding off in hopes you would react to it!

Lobos625

Check out this review by Adam Neely. He's an academically trained working jazz musician, and overall cool cat, as they say lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFYBVGdB7MU

Andy

ummmm ok! I think it felt like real people singing and dancing, they definitely had chemistry, and the cinematography was incredible. I recommend watching the youtube video "When the director happens to be an expert in color theory" (or don't - I don't care) It talks about Chazelle's use of color to subliminally tell the story. I've seen the film 10+ times and there were details I had never noticed before. At the end of the day I think its a beautiful and well told story. If you don't like musicals or references to classic then its just not for you. Doesn't make it a bad movie.

Maddie

Your Thursday movies choices are eclectic and awesome Nat 😊 Never watched this one before, but damn I loved it! I love the music. My dad had a drum set, and was a huge jazz fan and loved Buddy Rich, so I heard a lot of his music growing up. In the kitchen we would used to grab a knife and fork and play drums on the table tops 😄 Buddy Rich was infamous for shouting, or should that be encouraging by force, his band. There are recordings of his many tantrums, and interestingly Jerry Seinfeld heard them and used some lines in his show. The episode where George does the opposite of what he usually does, and is at the cinema and berates the people behind him for kicking his seat, what he shouts at them is what Rich shouted at his band! Wouldn't want to get on his wrong side 😄 Really loved watching this one with you Nat, and getting all your little stories about your past experiences, even though it was causing you trauma. Thanks for watching this one Nat, and thanks for a great reaction. I enjoyed La La Land subjectively for what it was, and it was different from anything else at the time. And of course I loved the music. I think you said before that it was a little too close to home for you. Maybe one day we will get the full story behind just exactly why Emma and Ryan rubbed you up the wrong way ha ha 😂 💛

Darryl Low

Babylon is absolutely worth a watch in my opinion, I personally loveddd it! it’s such a fun, well made movie with amazing music and performances! I think having a background in production yourself you’d appreciate that much more! That would be a great reaction

Jordan

Wouldn't be much of a musical then... It also depends on your perspective. Emma/Ryan have neither danced nor sung before and they're honestly pretty good off of a couple of months of training.

Spencer Wattamaniuk

Having been a big fan of actual 30's-50's musical rom-coms, seeing Emma and Ryan try was kind of sad. Their song and dance numbers were stiff, it really felt more like actors were holding signs saying "remember how cool Kelly and Charisse were in 'Singin' in the Rain'? We're cool too." It was a problem because they didn't need to do the dance numbers. The movie could've just been the story and actors and carry the theme perfectly fine. For example, Emma Stone's character could have a hard time showing on-screen chemistry with a co-star but not with Ryan's character, and maybe have the two of them discuss this point: Emma "The director said I wasn't "charming enough"." Ryan: "But you're charming enough to me." Emma: "That's different..." and romantic music plays while they gaze into each other's eyes. So then she diverts her emotional energy into the job and away from Ryan, succeeding in her career while neglecting him and so you get your melancholy ending. The dance bits were just too much Oscar-bait.

Who Are These People

My favourite movie of all time, so glad you reacted to this. Sucks you hated La La Land though!

Spencer Wattamaniuk

It made me sad to hear you hated la la land so much - it's one of my favorite movies. I think one thing that is really neat about Chazelle movies is that they all share a common theme of "was it worth it?" being a great drummer, following your dreams of acting, going to the moon, working in 1920's Hollywood. You leave the movie with that feeling of accomplishment but at a great cost. I just started the reaction so I'm excited to see what you think about whiplash!

When the credits rolled I nearly jumped out of my seat
