2024-03-15 13:17:25 +0000 UTCI really enjoyed both of the "A Quiet Place" films. The only complaint I have against the second one is that it built up its momentum straight up till the end and I really wanted the story to just keep on going; I was really absorbed in it and didn't want it to end.

At worst I'm saying some people way overestimate the depth and breadth of their own knowledge and experience. And I think you know I've got a point, you just don't like how I said it. If the only way choices are made is through majority rule, then you will always end up with results that cater to the lowest common denominator. This is how show business works, how advertising works, how politics works, and how polls work, either in the real world or on the internets. Doesn't mean we all have to like it, or take it lying down. We also don't have to cower if people think our pointing it out, without singling anyone out, or calling anyone names, just makes us a big meany stupid head.

There are many great films out there, and of course people will gravitate towards the films they've seen and/or believe are good. No one person is going to have seen every movie Nat is going to toss into these polls. There's no need to comment in attempts to bring other's down simply over a movie vote. You imply that every person who votes against what you'd like to see her react to, are dimwitted or without taste. Just move on.

It won 6 Emmy, 4 Golden Globe and 6 Critics' Choice. I do not want to give away the plot so I've been very vague.

2024-03-14 00:45:40 +0000 UTCI have this sneaking suspicion that there are a lot of people here who look at these polls, see one movie out of the four offered that they've seen, then vote for that film and enthusiastically champion it in the comments. They gush about it as though it's a great film, when it's actually just the only one they're familiar with and their enthusiasm is really just excitement that they know any of the films and that they get to participate in the selection process and have something to say. You can see this borne out when somebody talks about a by the numbers, mediocre film as though it's the best thing ever in its genre, that it was so scary and so amazing an experience, they just loved it. You can see clearly that they are unaware of the decades of films preceding this new one that have created endless tropes and cliches that make the film they're gushing over so derivative and ordinary. But vote for it they will, which is why I'm glad to see Nat watch some stuff that she's just picked out for herself. Because if it's all about the polls, the films that will always win are the ones marketed to the youngest and least experienced, which means we're always trapped with films made for teenagers.

A Quiet Place Part 2 is a decent horror sequel with some tension and jump scares. The Fly is a sci-fi horror classic but I anticipate a lot of cringey faces and whining about the gore. I don’t think I’ve seen the the other one — maybe I’ll check it out myself. I watched M3GAN in the theatre and own it; I’ve watch it numerous times and it’s a great modern take on the “evil doll” horror sub-genre. I’m confident Natalie will enjoy it… Hopefully it’ll win a future poll, or Natalie decides to watch it anyway. Speaking of modern horror films that won’t win a Patreon poll but Natalie should watch anyway is SMILE (2022). It’s not as meme-able as M3GAN but it is super-creepy and has a crazy climax!

Such a classic, amazing practical effects, Jeff Goldblum AND Geena Davis being hot as hell, and it’s also where the iconic quote “Be afraid. Be very afraid.” comes from 🙏🏻🫡
