Original Series: Fallout

Wilzig doesn't have plot armor. Those turrets are just notoriously inaccurate. In the games they are almost guaranteed to miss you as long as you keep moving and don't run straight at it or away from it. That's why it requests that he remain calm before firing. It's a little inside joke for fans of the games.

I guess "Chicken F*cker" wouldn't fly in the IMDB credits.

David Lonewolf Wright

Finally getting around to watching these reactions, but all I can see when I look at the doctor and the dog is Person of Interest :P Anyone else?

So much of the production design of this show makes me happy. Though now I want to see her play one of the Bethseda fallout games (maybe Fallout: New Vegas) and nitpick all the weird incongruities, like dishes that have survived 200 years. =D

It makes me feel so happy that you're enjoying this show so much Natalie! :) This here is my top fave new show. It's strange that you're completely in the dark, with this show. I played Fallout 3 back when it was new, along with each of the other games in the series since that time. If you're open to gaming at all, I'd totally suggest that you give one of the three newer games a shot - Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas or Fallout 4. lmao, great reference to a golf caddie! HA! You got it. :) The CRAM/SPAM bit. :) That's a Yao Guai, not a bear. In the games a pistol shot would NOT kill the beast. Basically the same thing but Yao Guai are mutated bears that are incredibly durable and strong. Scary stuff! lol, if I ran into that dude in game, chances are I'd kill him so I could loot all of his things. hahahaha, I was laughing so much when dude's face was full of joy/surprise after he ignited the gauntlets! :) That made me happy. It was a nuka cola. I have a bobblehead! I got it from a lunchbox dealio thing that I bought with Fallout 3 ages ago. Overall, I enjoyed watching this with you quite a bit! I've already watched the entire thing but I'm happy to rewatch the show with ya on here. :)

I’m surprised you didn’t recognize LAX in the credits.

Jason Gillman

I thought about the turret too then i realised. This is based from a video games world, there is going to be endless plot armor like in video games. Its purposeful they shot it like that.

Atlantis is so good. I think you gonna love it

Thomas Richter

The opening to this episode was filmed on the skeleton coast in Namibia. The old houses are real places and are part of an old diamond mine town. The ship wreck is also real. The show takes place in California specifically around LA. This episode was fast paced, but it begins to slow down with Ep3 as it starts to focus on less characters at the same time.

Joshua Russler

Common mistake to confuse the two, Mals are a little smaller.

Christopher Gray

I think the gun was trying to hit the dog not the Dr so that is why it missed.

Christopher Gray

The second episode of Fallout was good, with better action than the premiere, and it stands up better to second-viewing, but suffered from some frustrating contrivances. It was unclear why that scientist reacted to seeing Wilzig’s dog by sounding the alarm. It would’ve made more sense if he’d discovered what Wilzig had injected into his head and tried to turn him in, rather than ratting on him for having a dog. Wilzig had unbelievable plot armour when the automated gatling gun turret shot at him and the dog. As Natalie exclaimed, he wasn’t moving very fast — he was old-man-shuffling rather than running for his life. I suppose the turret’s terrible aim might be a reference to Vault-Tec’s shoddy products, but those bullets were impacting all around him, which is crazy-bad dispersion at that range. That scene couldn’t been staged so it wasn’t so goofy, like Wilzig throwing something as a distraction; but then a second turret popped up, so Wilzig moved between the two and then ducked, causing the turrets to destroy each other. That would’ve been clever and FUNNY! The scenes with Maximus and Knight Titus were a mixed bag. I kinda liked that the armoured Knights were shown to be power-trippy, incompetent cowards, but the way Titus berated Maximus when he desperately needed his help to survive was unbelievably dumb! I suppose the show wanted the audience to empathize with Maximus by him not actively betraying and killing Titus for his armour, but at least that would’ve portrayed him as strong and ambitious, rather than an opportunistic weakling. I enjoyed Lucy’s interaction with the Sand Farmer (“captain underpants”) and crotchety old Ma June. But I agree it seemed implausible for Wilzig to happen upon Lucy during the night and Lucy ended up in Filly, where Wilzig happened to be heading. The geography is also problematic, because if Vault 33 is somewhere between the Enclave base (where Wilzig escaped) and Filly, WHY didn’t Moldaver rendezvous with Wilzig around there, before OR after the raid on Vault 33? No spoilers, but Moldaver knew how important what was in Wilzig’s head was, and that the Brotherhood and bounty hunters would be searching for him, but she just let Wilzig WALK to Filly!? I know it was contrived so Lucy would meet Wilzig and he’d share his insights about how dangerous it was in the world outside the Vault, establishing some amity between the two, so that when they met again in Filly, Lucy would feel obligated to help Wilzig. It would've worked better if they met in Filly, Wilzig helped Lucy out of an altercation (because of how dangerous Filly is), establishing amity; the battle would play out the same; Lucy and Wilzig escape, and the campfire scene takes place after. Then something happens that makes Wilzig take the pill. The Ghoul’s V.A.T.s-style shootout in Filly was awesome and Lucy's descalation speech with him was fun. Maximus' act of “chivalry” was heroic, and it was good that his inexperience fighting in the power armour allowed the Ghoul to defeat him. And the Ghoul saved the dog! The second episode was entertaining, but I expected better than this from Jonathan Nolan, the director of the first 3 episodes.

Rod Reavern

I love how innocent and wholesome Lucy is. Hearing her curse the way she does is so cute. Nat, how long do you think before she lets out an F-bomb or some other curse word?

Powers209

The Central Committee, officially the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, is the highest organ when the national congress is not in session and is tasked with carrying out congress resolutions, directing all party work, and representing the Chinese Communist Party

Jayson Phillips

As I said it was hinted at in the game not in the show.

Jayson Phillips

Those were the Cyrillic initials for the former USSR (which I believe still existed in Fallout’s alternate timeline), not China. I know there are numerous references to the Soviet Union in the Fallout games, but I don’t think that was a reference to Communist China being the U.S.’s enemy in the “Great War” in the Fallout show. It’s just subtle world-building.

Rod Reavern

Was coming to say this. Belgians are like the psychotic little sibling of the GSD lol

Adam

Also in the game it was set up that China started the war that's why you see the CCCP satellite. Movie trivia the Pip boys in the show are actually i-phones covered by a pip boy shell and Ella broke several of them because she likes to talk with her hands alot and they fly off and break lol.

Jayson Phillips

"What a snake oil salesman." Funnily enough, that's exactly what the character is named in this show. He's just "The Snake Oil Salesman."

Jeff K

I don't think the dog is a German Shepherd but a Belgian Malinois.

Vu Tran

Regarding the dinner part: I had just gotten my lunch together when I started the episode and I remembered, "Oh, right. This is a show that's going to destroy my appetite."

Jeff K

That's a pretty good idea!

Richard Thrust

And one fun little nod to the games: when Lucy approaches the guy in the diaper, she's pointing her gun at him. That's an intentional nod (per Todd Howard and Jonah Nolan) to when, in the game, you'll approach an NPC to start a conversation but forget to holster your weapon. So in real life, you'd just be walking up to someone to say hello while aiming a gun at them. Love that. And agreed on Ella's accent. It's one of the better American accents I've ever heard from a British performer. Also: a couple other Easter eggs in the store, there's a Grognak the Barbarian comic and a copy of the Wasteland Survival Guide.

Jeff K

Some great Fallout Easter Eggs. Of course the bobblehead. The chainsaw blade at the end is a weapon in the game called "The Ripper". The slow-mo stuff with the Ghoul is a callback to V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System), which can target specific limbs. Oh, say, the leg of a doctor maybe. The vending machine you saw Nat was "Nuka-Cola" which is all over the game. The mutated bear is a Yao Guai. The 2-headed cow is called a Brahmin. Iguana on a stick is a staple food in the games. And the Stimpaks are your standard video game trope. Just stick it in, and Psssssst.... health is restored. Do not ask questions how it works. It's video game logic. Everyone feel free to post other eggs you find! Ella Purnell is a goddamn vocal genius. I just watched a WIRED autocomplete interview that had her in it, and she is ENGLISH with a capital GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. It's amazing how much she doesn't sound like her "normal" self. I am so impressed by her.

Mastervodo

Puppies in the beginning weren't charred. They were just black in color and covered in birth fluids lol

Andy

@Rogier - that's how I took it as well, since that jives with the naming conventions for places you find in the games (like "Novac" in New Vegas gets its name from a No Vacancy sign at a motel, etc).

Jeff K

I thought it had to do with the place being in a LandFILL so Filly :P

Rogier Oude Heuvel

I think Filly might be Fillmore. And I think starting out near Santa Monica might be a reference to the vaults being stocked with rich people from Malibu.

Richard Thrust

Having a dog is a big part of Fallout lore. Dogmeat has been in every mainline Fallout game(different dog each time), and is the only companion I use in Fallout 4. Everyone else talks too much.

JediLounger

Came to work by mistake and headed back home now. Perfect timing.

adrianR31

I don't want to set the world on fire I just want to start A flame in your heart

Mastervodo

Happy Monday Nat. Hope you had a great weekend too. That thumbnail screams "Girl under pressure" haha Looking forward to more Fallout this week, and also Atlantis is an awesome surprise. Excited to watch a new collaborator on your channel 😊 Note to self - Don't watch Fallout when I'm eating my dinner 😄 Enjoyed this episode a lot Nat. I love the whole aesthetic and the locations are pretty creepy and cool. It's all progressing nicely and can't wait for the next one tomorrow 😊
