Nat's patrons are intelligent enough to guess what's what based on your clumsy comment. You just ruined it for new viewers. No need to elaborate. You've done enough damage. Congratulations chief. Now YOU are the DVD rental guy!

Gerald Corona

I’ve always been tempted to re-edit Memento into chronological order just to see how it all plays out in real time. In fact. BRB.

Jason Dolan

Yep. Natalie is usually so smart at picking up things particularly in her analysis after the fact so I was surprised she missed this. But it is complex in how it is edited and woven together. You HAVE to watch this movie multiple times to really appreciate it in my opinion, THEN decide if you think the story is good or not.

James McKey

I kind of agree with your about this film in regards to story. From a technical perspective, and in terms of concept and acting, it's an excellent idea and well executed. But storywise, it does feel a bit thin. I think Christopher Nolan just really wanted to do this concept of a film running in reverse, and someone who can't form new short term memories. It's a neat idea. But the plot itself I think is so thin, that this really is just more about the concept. And again, it IS a VERY good movie. But it definitely feels more style over substance. So it's kind of like, yes, very impressive for someone's second film. But also feels like someone's second film.

Nicholas Sulikowski

I am by no means mad at you! I am however - flabbergasted that you didn't cry on this one. I cried when i saw it the first time, and that was after a worthless piece of genetic material spoiled most of it for me as they were handing me the DVD at the rental place. Yeah. But i've seen you cry at many movies that never made me tear up. I'm kind of always in that heady space, but his situation throughout really moved me, and the realization that the person that ended his wife's life...... Just in case someone reads these comments before watching the movie, i won't elaborate on that. A bit of trivia that might interest you and others in this community - the original writer of the story, Jonathan, brother of Christopher Nolan - is also the showrunner of Fallout!

The beginning is the end and the end is the beginning. The end of a scene is the beginning of the last scene. Really good editing.

Daniel Vezina

So glad you finally watched it. You're right, this movie is like a puzzle. I believe this is done on purpose as another way for us to experience what Lenny is going through. He's trying to put together the biggest puzzle of his life, who killed his wife. Its a puzzle that gives him purpose since he doesn't have anything else. He doesn't have his wife or his life since he can't remember his life. So that's why he's so upset when Teddy reveals the truth to him, it takes away his purpose.

Black and White is when the story was moving forwards Color is when the story way moving backwards

Jason Dolan

I like this movie. it is, for me, better than Interstellar, Inception, Tenet and Openheimer. But I like Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Prestige better

Thomas Richter

The colour scenes are backwards chronologically so the audience feels what it's like to be Lenny. Because the audience doesn't know what just happened before the scene start. And the black and white scenes are expositions in a correct chronological order by the end of the movie the two styles meet and the audience get finally a full picture of the story.

Thomas Richter

First off, I think it's very funny every time you are told the name "Sammy Jenkis", you forgot and called him "Sammy Jenkins".. very appropriate for this movie. I think Xavier said it well above. The colour scenes are sequenced backward, and the black/white scenes are sequenced forward and (until the end) are almost purely expositional. It's clear near the end that the black/white scenes are at the start of the story. So if we say 20 scenes in black/white and 20 in colour the order would be: #40 (played in reverse) #1 (b/w) #39 (colour) #2 (b/w) #38 (colour) etc. Kudos for spotting the 5-6 frame reveal at the 1 hr 30 moment, a lot of people miss that!

This film in the context of the revenge genre is kind of an indictment of the essential meaninglessness of revenge on behalf of the dead. There’s so many John Gs out there… you look at John Wick killing hundreds of anonymous guys we know he won’t remember. The insurance investigator is a staple of noir films since at least Double Indemnity. It’s kind of the perfect job. The PI needs a reason to get involved and the cop is unsympathetic but the insurance guy is nicely ambiguous.

Jacob King

Love The Prestige. It’s an adaptation of a novel (though it’s quite different) so one reason it stands out in Nolan’s filmography is the story and characters have a lot more meat to them.

Jacob King

Co -Creator with his wife Lisa Joy actually (and creators of Westworld)

My favorite movie that he is in is The Count of Monte Cristo.

LENNNNNYYYYYYYY!

I think this movie's emotional content hits harder on a second viewing when you know what's going on ahead of time. Because yeah, the first time around you're too preoccupied with wondering what's going on and who is who.

hahahaha, I love your initial reaction to the picture! "It's not developing.. IT'S UNDEVELOPING!" hahahaha lol, yup, his memory is fucked. I'm glad you're intrigued early on. :) This movie's awesome at that. :) The way this is all played out is mega interesting! I loved this movie's direction. In the end it all just feels right. Yeah - this movie jumps all over. You'll get used to it. When I first watched this I was a good few years younger and yeah - really enjoyed it. :) Love his logic. He isn't wanting to kill John G for him but for her. This isn't for him at all - it's for her vengeance. This type of memory loss is heartbreaking. It really hit me in the feels, this movie. Wow - okay - this movie HITS me hard emotionally. I'm obviously biased toward that end though as my own mom had memory issues similar to what Leonard had. You could have a conversation with her and the next time you spoke with her she'd have very little idea of what happened. That's honestly probably why this film affects me so much. A 7/10 on story?1 I STRONGLY disagree with you on this one Natalie. xD If I had your complaints the lowest I'd go is 8/10. Each time I watch this I'm emotionally affected by the story in this movie. Reason for that is simple and very personal. My mom's memory issues are something that I had to deal with nonstop for many years. It's something that I'll never forget. I love my mom. I hate what her mind became toward her end. Broke my heart. That's my take on this, though!

Logan Kerlee

Am I misremembering or is Andy Serkis in it as well? As Tesla's assistant?

Chris H

Guy Pierce is excellent in LA Confidential.

SilentBobFather

I have such a vivid memory of seeing this movie in the theater with one of my roommates in college, at the Westcott Cinema down the street from where we lived our junior year at Syracuse, and being both blown away and utterly confused. Which, I mean... is kinda the point? Such a good film. Who doesn't love Guy Pearce?

Jeff K

The black and white scenes are the movie going forward in time starting from the first scene in a normal movie. The colored scenes are the movie going backwards in time starting from the last scene. So the black and white is going from scene 1 to 2 to 3, while the color is going from 10 to 9 to 8. Then when we meet in the middle, you can see that the black and white transitions to a colored scene.

Patrick F

This was my first time watch as well. And the first time I think I've been 100% in sync with you on the final analysis haha (we're usually like 90% in line most of the time tbh). Yeah, I didn't feel much emotional weight either despite the obviously excellent film making. That's why Interstellar is still my fav Nolan movie. The "love is the answer" is cheesy but adds so much emotional weight to the complex, heady, time-bendy thing that Nolan clearly loves.

Andy

Fun fact: the movie is based off a short story written by Jonathan Nolan, of course Christopher's brother and also the Executive Producer of the series "Fallout" which we're enjoying here in the channel! LOL!

Alan Felicia

The black and white scenes had a more literal purpose in this movie than it did in Oppenheimer. The black and white scenes moved forward, while the colored scenes moved backwards. It transitioned from black and white to color when he took the photo of jimmy grants because that was the exact moment that the two versions of the stories met. I figured you didn't get that though, because I was expecting a much more mind blown reaction from you lol

xavier munden

The first & only time We see Logan & Bruce Wayne in the same screen LOL! Seriously, one of my favorite Nolan movie! At the time, never knew Hugh Jackman has so much charisma & showmanship.

Alan Felicia

Yeah mine too. Such a clever movie 😊

Darryl Low

Probably my favorite Nolan movie

Kevin Farrell

Dale Diaz
