FIRST TIME WATCHING: Fallout S1E8

Wow...just wow....

It's not fair of the writers to get me THIS HOOKED and then the season just END like that! Like are you kidding me!?

This show was so fun and quirky. The twists were so addictive and I truly am stoked for next season already.

Thanks for going on the journey with me! As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Original Series: Fallout

Comments

Cillian is an absolute delight in Peaky. Helen McRory (rip) brilliant. Adrien Brody chews the scenery unlike anything you've ever seen. Tom Hardy goes off in this series. And SO MUCH GOOD MUSIC. White Stripes, Idles, Sinead O'Connor, Arctic Monkeys, and more. It's also offically the most understood show in the world. Literally. People have a hard time hearing through the accent so turn your subtitles on, use headphones, or start exercising your context clue muscles.

When talking to Bud in an earlier episode, Cooper mentioned that a design flaw in the T-45 power armor costed a lot of good men and women their lives at the Battle of Anchorage. I'm assuming the reason he couldn't just off Maximus is because he was wearing Titus' T-60, and it presumably no longer had that design flaw. Likewise, that would mean that the power armors in that scene were T-45s. About the end scene: Hank's face was sunburnt and blistered, and since we didn't get definitive departure and arrival times, it's probably safe to say it took him a while to get there.

so about the people being alive from before the war, the creators of Fallout said their biggest regret having it be 200 years rather than a lesser amount, so often some things seem a little ridiculous timeline wise haha but thats just a staple of the fallout series tbh but im glad you enjoyed it so much, great reaction as always

Tesh

Really enjoyed this series! Love how the story was told and giving us Fans more questions and mysteries by the end of Season. Very invested for S2!

3. The Ghoul showed because he still had a code and a conscious. He put the other Ghoul out of his misery because he was turning, but had him thinking about a happy memory. Everything he put Lucy through was to teach her that the wasteland will break her down and force her to do bad things to survive (drinking the radiated water, biting his finger off (because finding her dad was super important to her & he cut her finger off after because she reminded him of the golden rule), etc; she killed Martha in the store). She reminded him of the same golden rule that did nothing for him (he trusted Vault-tec, people judged him for the ads and his wife betrayed him by saying Vault-tec should drop the bombs). It was when he rewatched his movie, he was speaking to himself in that moment, is what changed how he was going forward.

Alvin Everett

1. That was Betty, the current overseer of Vault 33, who introduced Hank to Cooper 2. Betty & Hank were on Vault-tec’s side, which made them overseers, Moldaver was the leader of the conspiracists against Vault-tec at the meeting Cooper went to.

Alvin Everett

1. It occurred to me today, if Cooper Howard knew about the weak spot in the power armor, why didn't he exploit that while fighting Maximus in Filly? Because he knew he was a main character and couldn't kill him? (haha) 2. The code used to activate the cold fusion reactor (101097) is a nod to October 10th 1997, launch date of the first Fallout game. 3. Fallout nerds like myself know that the city Hank is approaching at the final scene is New Vegas (formerly Las Vegas). This is VERY exciting. 4. Speaking of New Vegas, it's pretty impressive that Hank could walk there, in power armor, on what's apparently at least a 4 hour trip from L.A. at highway speeds. (who knows, maybe it took him multiple days to get there and perhaps he stopped for supplies)

Keith Jacobsen

While it is ethically dubious to spy on your wife I think the discovery that she is planning on murdering 99.95% of all life on Earth is kind of a valid retroactive justification. There was a bit in the previous episode where the president asked Coop if he was still looking for “her”; implying that Coop’s 200 years in the wasteland was a quest to find Barb making a parallel to Lucy’s quest to find Hank. Hank was revealed to be the villain but I think Barb’s role is still ambiguous because if she was in control Janey would have been safe. I liked the shows use of parallels and repetition. The brotherhood’s assault on the observatory was a repeat of Maximus’s rescue of Lucy in Vault 4. A reminder that war never changes.

Jacob King

i died when she called Hank a fucking simp

I just love that you meet a younger Betty in the office as well. That made me do a double take on the first viewing.

mojo shivers

The credits reveal that the town is New Vegas. That's where one of the games Fallout: New Vegas is set.

Connor Ellis

I agree that Barb would have done everything in her power to ensure her daughter Janey was safely with her in a vault when Vault-Tec planned to instigate the Great War, but I’m certain it was out of her control. In the Fallout games, even insiders like Robert House mis-calculated exactly when the bombs would fall, so it’s plausible that Vault-Tec had planned for a certain date and time, but something unexpected happened that made them initiate early — OR it was the U.S. or China who launched first — and that’s why Barb didn’t have her daughter secured in a bunker.

Rod Reavern

It wasn't the 50s. The bombs dropped in 2077. It's just in the Fallout universe, Atomic Energy became the norm instead of the Microchip. The imaginary 50s retrofuture became real.

Connor Ellis

The only reason I'm not fully convinced Vault-Tec dropped the first bomb is because it happened when Barb's daughter was still out in the world, and while she proved to be a pretty terrible person, I can't imagine she'd sign off on dropping them before her daughter was safe. That said, it might not have been within her control, since we saw some shadowy figures overlooking the meeting. I'll be very curious to find out who that was.

Jeff K

It doesn’t really matter if Vault-Tec dropped the first bomb(s) or not, because the nuclear apocalypse was a foregone conclusion even if they had to initiate it. Barb’s point was that by Vault-Tec dropping the bomb, they’d know precisely when it would happen and would be prepared, i.e. all Vault-Tec employees and corporate partners already sheltered in the Vaults. The point of that scene was Cooper realized his wife was fully in bed with Vault-Tec and how monstrous their grand scheme was. I don’t believe the U.S. or China would launch a first strike because of M.A.D.. Vault-Tec was the ONLY faction that genuinely wanted a nuclear apocalypse, which is why it makes the most sense they instigated it.

Rod Reavern

It's funny how you thought Max was untrustworthy until the end, but he did ultimately keep his word to Lucy. Instead of 5 or 6 knights like Lucy wanted, he brought the entire Brotherhood. I think that was his plan in episode 7. The Brotherhood wouldn't help Lucy if they had the head, but they would do anything to get their hands on it. So tell them where the head is and the whole cavalry comes running...

Neo Geo

Idk if u already wrote that later cause I'm not reading all that haha

Tim

It's not confirmed that vault tec dropped the bomb. They just played with the idea haha

Tim

I enjoyed the finale, aside from a few annoying contrivances. The revelations were fantastic and delivered what I wanted, with some welcome surprises. I know some Fallout fans didn’t like the season finale because the revelations ended the decades-old ambiguity in the Fallout games about what side dropped the first bomb in the games. Certain fans were REALLY invested in believing it was China that started it — I wonder why? ❄️ I’ve always believed in the Vault-Tec theory because… EVERYTHING we know about Vault-Tec and their business partners. All of the immoral Vault experiments indicate that Vault-Tec had no moral qualms and treated humans as lab rats. And like Charles Whiteknife said, Vault-Tec had a fiduciary responsibility to its stockholders to increase the corporation’s profits, which meant that peace was contrary to their immediate and long-term goals. The “Evil Meeting” that Cooper eavesdropped on was a little hammy but fit the tone already established by the series. I’m certain that scene it was an homage to the “War Room” scene in Dr. Strangelove wherein the government and military leaders formulate plans for after the nuclear apocalypse. The only problem with that scene was Barb KNEW that her Pipboy was always transmitting (she even mentioned it to Bud) and she still brought it into the most super-secret Doomsday meeting EVER!? It’s unbelievable that they’d allow ANY Pipboys inside that room. I know that Barb appeared to receive a directive through her Pipboy, presumably from the shadowy figures in the gallery above the meeting room. And I KNOW it was necessary for Cooper to eavesdrop on the meeting to facilitate the entire revelation about Vault-Tec and his wife… but it was contrived. It could’ve been executed better, simply by NOT showing that Barb knew her Pipboy was functioning strangely. The other problem was that Hank was completely unrepentant about what he did, but somehow Lucy guilt-tripped him into giving up the code to Moldaver? Then when Moldaver finally got what she wanted after 200+ years… she PAUSED when the Brotherhood attacked!? 🙄 It would’ve been better if Hank did NOT give in to Lucy or Moldaver, demonstrating he cared more about protecting Vault-Tec’s secrets and plan for the future more than his own daughter. But when the Brotherhood assaulted Moldaver’s base and his own life was in danger, he finally agreed to unlock the cold fusion device if they released him. Then he double-crossed them. Ideally, Moldaver’s people should’ve recovered Maximus’ power armour he left behind, and it was in the room, and Hank used the unlocked cold fusion device to power the armour to escape. That would’ve been better than the random Brotherhood Knight headless-chicken-walking into the room and dropping dead, just so Hank could take the power armour, but leave the cold fusion device behind. The worst problem was that Moldaver’s plan MADE NO SENSE! This goes back to the premiere episode: Moldaver attacked Vault 33, not to raid the place, but specifically to capture Hank, for two reasons: 1) To exact revenge on him for bombing Shady Sands; and 2) Because he knew Vault-Tec’s code to unlock cold fusion. I understand that Moldaver’s raiders were probably survivors from Shady Sands and they wanted revenge on all of the vault-dwellers, but Moldaver needed Hank specifically, and she didn’t capture him until the end of the raid. It should’ve been the first thing she did when she ordered the attack to begin. The raiders could’ve killed Hank and ruined Moldaver’s whole plan. Even IF Moldaver had captured Hank first and he somehow broke free and then saved Lucy, that doesn’t explain Moldaver’s ultimatum to Hank: Forcing him to choose between his daughter’s life and the 6 other hostages. Moldaver NEEDED to capture Lucy too to compel Hank’s cooperation, but she let him lock her in a safe room. Moldaver’s ultimatum was pointless because she let the hostages go anyway. It was all MIS-DIRECTION for the audience to make us believe Hank was a good guy who chose to save his daughter. Also, the timing of Moldaver’s attack on Vault 33 didn’t make sense because she didn’t even have the cold fusion device yet. And since it was so important, why let Wilzig hoof it across the Wasteland and use inept proxies to get him to her base? As Ryan George would say: “So the show can happen!” But there were better, obvious ways to accomplish that without disrespecting the intelligence of the audience. Another example of this was Vault 33’s destroyed water chip was never addressed again. If Vault 33 was going to run out of purified water after 2 months, WHY didn’t everyone want to move to Vault 32, which presumably had a functioning water chip? Or why didn’t Betty take Vault 32’s water chip for 33? Did everyone just forget the water chip was destroyed and Vault 33 was running out of water? I presume that finding a replacement water chip will be part of the plot of Season 2, as an homage to the first Fallout game. But it seems like Lucy and the Ghoul are headed for New Vegas in Season 2. Overall, I enjoyed Fallout Season 1. It was a good, but flawed first season, and I look forward to the second season.

Rod Reavern

Great episode! My face when you guessed that the zombie was Rose. Priceless. I do have a couple things to say about processing this episode: The show doesn’t make it super obvious, but “the past” isn’t the 1950s. It’s in the an alternate timeline to our own, after world war 2, where technology never didn’t develop the transistor but did develop atomic power. That’s why we see so much future-y tech (flying robots, quiet cars, working cryogenic chambers, great medical), but no digital technology. Because technology brought in a golden age, the aesthetic and style of the 50’s was never abandoned, and America waited over a century to have its “red scare”. “The past” in this show is the year 2077. This is why the ghoul had had experience with the battle armor. That technology existed during the war he fought in. I don’t think Lucy’s vault is where the important vault-tec people are. In her vault is Bud Askin’s project. The cryogenically frozen people in vault 31 are Bud’s buds. They are junior executives at vault tec. We even got to see younger Betty! I don’t think vault 31 is one of the “good vaults” that Barb was talking about. I think there’s another vault for the higher ups. I’m assuming that after the bomb dropped Cooper Howard (the ghoul) got his daughter to a vault-where either he was denied entry, or he just simply refused to go in, because of his falling out with Barb. It will be super exciting to see that back story-hopefully we get to figure it out in the next season! Yeah the show was super campy, but the good acting really helped me connect with the characters. I’m definitely willing to suspend disbelief and enjoy this universe and story.

David Winegeart

I am with you!

Yusuf

OH - and bud is a "Robobrain" and is a creature in Fallout you encounter.

Mastervodo

They didn't mention it, but the people in the pods were cryogenically frozen

larshans

My theory about Bud is Bud was the Overseer of Vault 31 from the beginning, but eventually TIME caught up to him: he grew old and his body would’ve died, but Bud would do anything to remain in charge and MANAGE the future, so he had his brain removed and placed on the “Roomba”. My guess is the brain transplant was performed by a Mr. Handy robot (like Snip-Snip) and Bud neglected to specify what type of robot body he wanted his brain to be transplanted to, so the robot used whatever was handy, which happened to be a Roomba.

Rod Reavern

Well Nat, if you're still fiending for more Fallout... if only there was any other way to get your fix until season two comes out... ;)

Jeff K

I love the evolution of Lucy's "Okie-dokie", symbolic to how she has changed throughout the show.

iMarks

Great reaction, fun ride, can't wait until season 2. They stayed true to the games on a surprising level, the best part is this is tied to the games, not outside the games. Lucy's wrap up was tragic, you can literally see and hear the life drained from her in that last "Okey Dokey" cool to see a phrase I got picked on for, making a come back. 🤣 you hear that one a lot in Tennessee. What sucks about Maximus's story is that in this episode, he was literally killing the people he grew up with, shady sands was his own people and he went in slaughtering them with the brotherhood without knowing... I wonder how he'll respond when he finds out.

Marcus Carter

Damn! Beat me by 10 minutes to say that!

Mastervodo

The town we see at the end isnt a Valult Tec town, but New Vegas from the Fallout New Vegas game.

SoaringTurtle

Betty the receptionist is Betty in vault 33.

SilentBobFather

I love that Wilzig's warning about the rad roaches in episode 2 wasn't just a quirky monologue; it was telling us the character arcs of Lucy and Maximus and explaining Coop: once you have been changed by the wasteland--become a different animal--you won't want the same things. And a brief note of something I found horrific in its implications: Bud-the-Brain comments offhanded to Norm that he wishes he could go to sleep. Bud must have been installed in the roomba before he was put in Vault 31 to manage it. And he's been awake in that Vault, with nothing to do but monitor the cryotubes and occasionally wake someone up to go to Vault 32 or 33, for over two centuries.

Kevin Mowery

Great little series to watch! Quick. Fun. Interesting. Unique. I hope Nat enjoys her time off/Honeymoon. And I hope she starts up The Boys Season 4 when she gets back! Who is with me?

Mastervodo

Great show, and as always a great reaction from Nat, I'm looking forward to Nat's reactions to the upcoming House of the Dragon season 2.

Baggie Mark

The ghoul they showed at the observatory is one of the ghouls she freed at the Super Duper Market

Vu Tran

Happy Tuesday Nat. So excited to watch the finale with you today, but gonna be sad it's all over until the next season 😩 Absolutely awesome finale for an amazing season. It all came together perfectly at the end, and it's all set up nicely for the season 2. So many cool shots in this episode. The characters are all so different, and their interactions together just work so well. After Lucy left the Ghoul those vials, I had a feeling he would come to her rescue and they would be buddies 😊 I've really loved watching this show with you Nat 💛
