I use to watch X-Men cartoon almost every Saturday morning as a kid. I don't remember much episodes and I don't think I ever watched the ending but I want to go back and rewatch it.

2024-08-24 20:41:59 +0000 UTCSomeone's a little salty. It's surprising that there's a few grown ups causing drama in these comments simply because X-Men '97 won over Peaky Blinders. Simply wait and they'll be more Peaky Blinders, Nothing to worry about. Every single show in the poll is great and each will get their turn to be viewed by Nat in time. No need to make voters feel like they did something wrong for voting for a series.

2024-08-22 19:40:16 +0000 UTCLove this show! And yeah, there was no need to watch the earlier seasons of the 90's cartoon. Marvel put out a quick 2 minute recap of it called "Previously on X-men" if you'd like to watch that. But other than that there is no need. And yes these characters are different than the Fox live action films. They're closer to some of the comics.

2024-08-22 01:02:36 +0000 UTCDamn, big disagree, but cool to see other views on the series. I guess some people don't like the melodramatic dialogue but Magneto alone has some of the best writing, dialogue, and some of the most memorable quotes in recent years as well. It's an X-Men comic brought to life in animation, dialogue and everything. But you're correct on the fact that it seems like your one of the few people who thinks the show is bad. I personally don't get how the dialogue and voice acting would make someone cringe when this is so true to these characters and X-men in general. Even super cheesy lines like "Send in the Forecast" really only fits the boy scout personality of Cyclops. But it's all subjective, melodrama is not for everyone and that's maybe the biggest turning off point for a few people. I personally never had a problem with the dialogue and thought it was some of the best depictions of these characters in terms of their words, phrases, and dialogue. The original series on the other hand is a differant story. Don't think the dialogue has aged all that well at all.

2024-08-21 21:49:41 +0000 UTCYeah I'm a huge Storm fan too, her design and powers are so cool. I always thought she talked that way because she was from Africa and her mother was supposedly an African princess, which is canon, but apparently she's actually from New York, and lived in Cairo too. Just looked that up actually lol. But she's also great because along with Cyclops she's a main leader of the X-Men. The X-Men are an always changing team, I think there's supposed to be about 100 different characters who have been on the team, although some just for a very short time, just like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four they would have temporary replacements. Damn, one of the comics that were stolen from me (someone stole all my comics, there weren't a lot and they weren't even that valuable, except to me lol) was the Fantastic Four but it was Spider-Man, the Hulk, Wolverine, and Ghost Rider, so cool, aw man I miss my comics. Fuckers stole my baseball cards too.

2024-08-21 11:19:12 +0000 UTCOk ok..ha just watched your reaction so here’s my quick reaction to your reaction You should’ve watched 1&2 together that’s how it came out and I think you would’ve gotten a better understanding of the different tone , dialogue, relationships along with the animation style (1997)and new characters who you’re not familiar with. Don’t worry, on behalf of everyone who voted for you to watch X-men 97 we wouldn’t steer you wrong. It’s one of the most intelligent shows I’ve ever seen. And It has a 99 percent rotten tomato score and was nominated for a Emmy, just saying. When you set it up for YouTube you should bundle 1&2, (3,4,5) then 6&7 then 8&9 then 10. And 10 has a post credit scene. Extra thoughts Storm is like a god that’s why she talks like that Rogue took captain marvels powers that’s why she’s so strong and can fly .

I know you said your not feeling a need to keep watching this... but it is short so it's not a huge commitment... and... fucking episode 5... it's... this first episode does a lot to catch people up if they didn't see the OG series... it gets so much better so fast... you should binge the hell out of this show.

2024-08-21 00:29:53 +0000 UTCThe original series was phenomenal, so I was a bit skeptical when I heard they were rebooting it... and honestly the first few eps to me were just "pretty good" ... but then it got sooooo damn good so fast. The way they pick right back up from the original series ... and the way the storylines are ripped straight for the comic books... the original voice actors... the dialogue ... the breakneck pace... definitely a worthy reboot.

2024-08-21 00:19:37 +0000 UTCThey do an amazing job at telling stories within such a short period of time, whole story arc's are told in a single 40 min episode and it's impressive but I also would've liked longer episodes. Though one could argue that having a Season with 10 episodes that range from 30 to 50 minutes allows for better quality overall than a 20 episode Season with like 50 minute episodes.

2024-08-21 00:13:44 +0000 UTCThis show is such a weird time capsule. It started in '92 but also was very accurate to the 80s X-Men comics, then gets rebooted in 2024 staying loyal to the look and feel of the original. And ALL the drama and soap opera style twists and turns that come with it. Looking forward to this watch through as things get crazy. Also the animation is sick.

2024-08-21 00:04:01 +0000 UTCThe original voice actors for Storm and Wolverine (and Rogue, I think?) from the 90s cartoon returned for X-Men ‘97 so you’re getting the full iconic effect there 🥹 the show can feel like it’s moving at a breakneck pace at times but you settle in quickly and the payoff is equisite 👌🏻 Glad to see the Scott, Jean, Logan love triangle permeates all X-Men media 🫡

2024-08-20 23:01:15 +0000 UTCAgree that it's ridiculous to ask for 6 seasons of a really old Saturday Morning Cartoon for the, like, 4 and half minutes of actual lore in them lmao but for pure vibes, maybe watch the first episode(s) of it, cuz they're old and for kids, and so very ... 90's? kinda 80's even. They're too on D+, right? Never got around to watching '97 on my own, so thanks, now it's part of my Natalie-watching. ... Ok, never use that phrase ever again.

2024-08-20 20:31:18 +0000 UTCAs long as you have basic insight into the X-Men you'll be fine. The show does a good job at recapping past events for people like yourself who haven't watched the original series, assuming you haven't watch the original. X-Men '97 never relies on past storylines beyond references. The storylines highlighted in the series are very much their own isolated stories, though recent aspect will connect back to past seasons, cool narrative continuity connections that are really impressive but not something casual fans would need to know about to understand what's happening. I'd argue that X-Men '97 is even a great introduction to The X-Men, changes up the Status Quo but it's no differant to New X-Men by Grant Morrison being your first X-Men comic.
LittleGalaxyBoy
2024-08-20 19:49:41 +0000 UTCThat's fair. Episode 1 is very much a re-introduction that recaps past events but does not really move forward the story. They actually released the first two episodes on March 20th 2024 so they knew that fans would want more, Episode 2 very much moves forward the story in unique ways and for myself the show just gets better and better each episode.

2024-08-20 19:11:41 +0000 UTCThe movies are their own thing with some comic stuff in them but this and the Animated series before which is 5 seasons is much more comic accurate and Gambit and Rogue are THE couple in X men other than Cyclops and Jean. Gambit is from New Orleans and Rogue is Southern in this continutity, she ran away from her dad who was abusive and got adopted by Mystique who became her adopted mom and eventually she used Rogue to commit crimes which lead to an encounter with Captain Marvel who Rogue was forced to hold on to for too ling taking her super strength and flight power permanently, so Captain marvel is in acoma and then Rogue ran from Mystique and found Proffessor X and the X men

Baggie Mark
2024-08-20 17:47:14 +0000 UTCThis show is definitely more comic accurate, the movies were kinda purposely not comic accurate because comic accuracy wasnt a priority for the filmmaker of the first X-Men movie. But yea this show is a more faithful retelling of the team and their powers and struggles in the comics.

2024-08-20 17:00:55 +0000 UTC"animated show was literally scripted for kids" I would agree if you were talking about the original series but X-Men '97 is definitely more mature. Some moments have you go "Wait this is a kids show". Though not Invincible levels of bloody it's still a pretty mature show with heavy themes, very sex positive show as well. Curious if later Seasons will move closer to the tone of the 2000s X-Men like Grant Morrison New Mutants, X-Men films etc. Though I have to say that the original series has not aged all that well, But I do actually prefer some storyline's from the series, such as Phoenix Saga and later the Dark Phoenix Saga over the comics. I think I even prefer the Days of Future Past storyline from the show as well. I would love if X-Men '97 moving forward pulls from Jonathan Hickman run, though those stories are much harder to get into if your don't know anything about the X-Men. Still plenty of X-Men runs to pull from such as New X-Men and Astonishing X-Men before we get to Jonathan Hickman.

2024-08-20 15:46:42 +0000 UTCYes 🙌🏼 the best version of X men makes me wanna read X Men comics now & I love how this episode gives Cyclops the justice he deserves that the movies never did & even the original X-Men animated series gave him justice
Narutoanime16
2024-08-20 15:29:35 +0000 UTCI have read X-Men comics my whole life. That includes the last 4-5 years of X-Men that were scripted by the GENIUS comic writer, Jonathan Hickman, which I feel have been the absolute best X-men stories of all time. Sadly, that run has come to an end, and X-men in the comics right now are directionless and much less interesting. We will see if that changes. However, when it comes to movies and TV shows.... The secret to watching X-men is you've got to be as swift.... wait.... no, that's video games. Every story in the movies and TV shows have come from the comics. And not done as well. The Dark Phoenix story-line for example has been done and re-done (and RE-DONE) in the TV show and movies. While everything is still entertaining, they still don't compare to the comics. 2 last notes for Nat: The animated show was literally scripted for kids, so no R-rated stuff like Invincible. While that may be nice break, you might also find this series "simple" or dumbed-down by comparison. 2nd - Cyclops' eye beams are supposed to be concussive. Not heat-generating like lasers. Gambit's powers allow him to "charge" objects with kinetic energy, which can explode on impact, or he can "time" or "trigger" them to release that energy. Just depends on what the situation calls for at the time.

2024-08-20 15:23:38 +0000 UTCOh don't worry most people going into this show never watch Season 5 of the series. It was produced right around the time Marvel was filling for Bankruptcy so a new animation studio took over and pumped out a pretty mixed bag Season with only a handful of episodes. Most people regarded Beyond Good & Evil Part 4 to be the final episode. Four episode story arc featuring Apocalypse that was really good. So whenever X-Men 97 was revealed people questioned if the showrunners would ignore Season 5 all together picking off right after Beyond Good & Evil or if they'll use the ending of Season 5 with Charles dying. But to the surprise of many they actually kept the ending of Season 5 and used it for the basis of X-Men '97.

2024-08-20 13:56:02 +0000 UTCThis series is so good for so many reasons. You don't need to watch the original series to watch this. The movies did a massive disservice to a handful of X-Men (i.e. Rogue, Cyclops, Storm) and even the rest of the team were changed. The director of the original movies, Bryan Singer, told the cast not to read any of the comics so they'd come up with their own interpretation of the characters. The only one who didn't listen obviously, was Hugh. This is why his Wolverine is so beloved and truer to the comics, like you said though a bit less sassy but better than the rest. Storm is from Kenya which is why supposed to be why she speaks the way she does, English is not her first language, she was thought to be a god from a young age due to her ability to control the weather. Rogue and Bobby(Iceman) had moments in the comics of romance but she was always tied to others, Gambit, etc. I'm excited for you to go on this journey. It's a good one!

2024-08-20 13:44:59 +0000 UTCHi, Nat. You don’t have to worry about watching the original five seasons of X-Men: The Animated Series. I’ll gladly tell you bits and pieces about what happened back then as we go along. This first episode summarizes some key events from Jubilee’s rescue and recruitment in the two-parter season 1 premiere to the destruction of the Sentinel factory, but the most impacting moment is the passing of Charles Xavier. In the finale of the original cartoon, Scott, Jean, and Logan reached out to Magneto just before he and his brotherhood were about to launch an attack on humanity. They convinced him to help save his longtime friend. Magneto wasn’t able to, but his powers still allowed him to revive Charles long enough to say goodbye. He had some very sweet things to say to the X-Men.

2024-08-20 13:16:29 +0000 UTCIs X-Men '97 Fine to Watch With No Past Knowledge: Even though X-Men '97 is basically the Sixth Season of a long running show from the 90s the showrunners decided to feature a time jump of a year after the events of Season 5 Episode 14 "Graduation Day" the final episode of the original series. An episode that most people wouldn't of seen thanks to Season 5 being produced right around the time Marvel was filling for Bankruptcy. New animation studio took over releasing only a handful of episodes. The series would end on a cliff-hanger as it was cancelled alongside every Marvel show during this time. Most people will remember the four episode story arc from Season 4 called Beyond Good and Evil featuring Apocalypse as the final episodes of the show. Apocalypse was introduced in earlier Seasons so the show very much built up to this storyline, while Season 5 was more forgettable. So this time jump allowed for a soft narrative reboot so that anyone could jump into X-Men '97 with zero past knowledge of the original series. Most viewers going into X-Men '97 will be people like yourself who never watched the 90s series but heard the hype surrounding X-Men '97. While other would remember a few bits and pieces but don't know how the show ended. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Episode is a Re-Introduction: This first episode very much acted as a re-introduction to this world for fans of the original series while also introducing new audiences to the X-Men. The show assumes that this is your first time meeting these characters. It also brings to light new elements such as Jean being pregnant, introducing Roberto, and setting up something interesting with Magneto at the end. The later episodes starting with EP2 open up the narrative meanwhile Ep1 acted as a little re-fresher for returning fans and an introduction for new fans like yourself. Should note that Disney actually released the first two episodes on March 20th 2024. Episode 1 acting as an introduction while Episode 2 moved forward the narrative, would've recommended watching these two episodes back to back but it's all good, excited for next week and hopefully you do watch watch a few back to back for an hour total worth of content. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Storyline's Already Covered: Storyline's you know from the films such as Days of Future Past, Dark Phoenix, and Apocalypse have already happened in this universe thanks to being told in the original series. The character of Bishop for example is from the Days of Future Past story arc. The future of 2055 where Sentinels rule over a ruined world and most of the X-Men are dead. Similar to what you saw in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) a film that also featured Bishop. The series also explored many of these characters origins, for example we a Weapon X storyline that covered Logan's origin and other characters as well. There's still countless more stories to tell both old and new moving forward so even if you missed 5 Seasons worth of stories there's still plenty to tell within X-Men '97. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Soap Opera and Art Direction: I love how they perfectly captured the soap opera feel of the X-Men from both the comics but also the original Animated Series. Filled with drama, and melodramatic moments, Romance etc. Though this does turn some people off X-Men '97 as these people are more used to the films or simply don't vibe with Soap Operas and melodrama. I know some people write off melodrama as "bad writing" but the dialogue in these series is just so good, Magneto being one of my favourite examples. But I myself cannot imagine the X-Men without the melodrama but I understand that it's not for everyone. The Art Direction is such a delight, retro 90s feel but modernized. And I cannot forget about the animation, so smooth with alot of depth and detail, great mix of 2D and 3D graphics. It very much feels like a 90s cartoon but modernized and having more flexibility when it comes to mature themes and thanks to less censorship. I love Invincible but I wish it had this level of animation, watching Invincible Season 2 after X-Men '97 it just felt unfinished and the fight scenes felt very lacklustre, though this is a common complaint people had with the show. But regardless both shows are amazing, My Adventures with Superman also has a really fun art style as well. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rogue can fly: Rogue indeed can fly something the films never showcased. During her earlier years as a member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Mutants Rogue crossed paths with Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) who you'll know as Captain Marvel. Rogue was infused with Danvers' powers whenever she touched Carol gaining her flight and strength but sending Carol into coma. This is true for the Animated Series as well that adopted this storyline amazingly. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rogue & Gambit: In the films Rogue got together with Bobby Drake, aka Iceman. But in the comics Rogue has had a few love interests but she's very much the on and off lover of Gambit and for many is her true love. I love Gambit and Rogue so for me I'll take them any day but I did like Iceman, and Rogue from the movies. The character of Gambit never showed up in the X-Men films, only appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine played by Taylor Kitsch with the film being set in 1979. So this is why Rogue was hooked up with Iceman instead, Rogue and Iceman being teenagers during the 2000s. Gambit was never introduced into the dynamitic and the two never met :( ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ First Class Picture Frame: Shown in the office of the late Professor X hangs a picture showcasing The First Class of Mutants. Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, and Beast before his blue furry form. All wearing their classic 1960s attire with masks to hide their identity. Iceman also looks like he's made of snow a fun reference to original design that depicted him closer to a snowman than an Iceman. All these characters first appeared in X-Men #1 (1963) making them the official First Class of Mutants. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim Lee Artwork: The X-Men Animated Series (1992-1997) along with X-Men '97 features Jim Lee's iconic designs, a young comic book artist who began his professional career in 1987 when he joined Marvel Comics. His final comic for Marvel would be X-Men (Vol. 2) #11, released in 1992, about three months before the premiere of the Animated Series." For many, this is the definitive look for the X-Men and all these characters, thanks to Lee's amazing artwork but also the Animated Series bringing the X-Men to the Mainstream audience beyond comic books. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Comic Accurate: And 100% correct the X-Men of this series are MUCH closer to their comic counterparts than what we got with the films. Not only in their appearance but their personality, accents, and powers as well. Along with storyline's from the comics, adopting them in a new light but still being faithful to those said comics. The films released during a time when it seems like studios were ashamed of comic book films, rather than embracing the comics they pushed certain aspect away. Make it grounded, realistic, Earth based etc. So that's why we ended up with films that differed heavily form the comics. The movies did introduce some cool ideas like Magneto's helmet blocking telepathy, an element that then made it's way into the comics and something people assume was always the cause. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Returning Voice Actors: Many of the voice actors return for X-Men '97 such as Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, and of course Cal Dodd as the iconic voice of Wolverine. Scott, Jean, and Gambit are now voiced by a younger generation of actors who do an amazing job of capturing the spirit, sound, and personality of the original voice actors. The original voice actors of the characters who got replaced returned to voice other characters, for example, Catherine Disher who voiced Jean Grey in the original series now voices “Val” Cooper a new character who we meet in this first episode. The original voice of Gambit, Chris Potter also returns to voice a different character, other examples as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ X-Men Theme: I have to talk about the amazing X-Men theme. The theme was composed by Ronald Aaron Wasserman who also happened to write and compose the theme to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993 - 1995) another iconic theme song. For many, this is the definitive X-Men theme song. The version we hear in the show was composed by the Newton Brothers who crafted an amazing soundtrack that's so true to the original show. Marvel always pumps out bangers, still listening to the Loki soundtrack.
