Original Series: X-Men '97

Comments

This episode is probably my favorite one so far. As a kid of the 90s, I watched almost every episode of X-Men on Saturday mornings. But the only way we would watch an episode twice if they showed a rerun. Streaming didn't exist yet. So there are episodes here and there I remember and some I don't so now I can go back and rewatch and watch for the first time I may have missed

Gambit and Rogue were the classic "will they/won't they" for YEARS in both the comics and the original tv series. It was the live action Xmen film that made her a teenager and took over the "little sister" role with Wolverine, instead of Jubilee in the comics and tv series.

I'm not actually sure if they provide any form of education beyond High School. But Emma Frost, along with Banshee did form The Xavier Institute for Higher Learning from the old Massachusetts Academy. So I assume this acts as a Mutant University/College. Mutants will attend Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters and once they graduate they can then attend Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.

LittleGalaxyBoy

would the school be considered a university? So far we’ve only seen the adult X-men but I was always under the assumption it was for saving younger students/a boarding school type situation

Seph Hernandez

Oh to play by the rules and still they come for you....magento is everything

Rey

I imagine the school also has medical students as well, along with other tutors who can tend to Mutants. Similar to any university with medical courses and resources.

The X-men have their own medical equipment at the mansion and most likely Beast would be the one taking care of medical examinations.

Forgot to mention in my original comment but Rogue was originally inspired by Grace Jones. She made her first appearance in Avengers Annual #10 (1981) created by Chris Claremont and Michael Golden. Claremont based her hair, tough personality, and general look after that of Grace Jones. A good comparason to early Rogue would be Grace Jone's appearance in A View to a Kill (1985) in terms of her style. Short slicked back hair with some very Grace inspired outfits. Rogue then joined the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #171 (1983) and by the mid 80s started to grow out her hair bringing us to the Jim Lee's design you see in X-Men '97 from the 1990s. These characters go through many hairstyles and outfits, naturally everyone has their favourites but I cannot picture Rogue without hair iconic Big hair, her outfit you see in the show is her most iconic appearance. But your 100% correct that Rogue has a very strong Dolly Parton vibe. Lenore Zann the voice actress of Rogue in both X-Men Animated Series (1992) and X-Men '97 is a massive Dolly Parton fan, quoting Dolly as a major inspiration. Even before the 1992 Animated Series Rogue of the 80s to early 90s was very Dolly Parton. The design simply evolved closer to that of Dolly, mostly thanks to her big hair and southern personality.

Ep3 & Ep4 together would work really well for next week. Ep4 is on the shorter side and for many is seen as a fun little filler episode. Ep5 & EP6 also works really well together. But I feel like Ep4 as much as I enjoyed it is the weakest episode overall.

The Friends of Humanity are a hate group that targets mutants. The Morlocks are a group of mutants who live in the sewers because most of them like Leech aren’t able to appear human. The Phoenix is a cosmic entity of fire that took over Jean in season 3. They fought side by side to defeat a deadly foe, but then the Phoenix had a selfish desire and it was taking a toll on Jean. The entity became Dark Phoenix, but the X-Men managed to make her realize the error of her ways and she finally decided to let Jean go. Asteroid M was a space sanctuary that Magneto built on an asteroid for mutants. For the most part it was actually a good plan, but one of the mutants he took in double-crossed him when their ideals collided. Let’s just say Magneto was more pacific by comparison.

Magento's Voice: This may be my favourite rendition of Magneto across any media. Matthew Waterson does a amazing job at carrying on the legacy of David Hemblen who defined the voice of Magneto thanks to his role as the character in the 90s Animated Series. Once Ian McKellen took up the role of Magneto in X-Men (2000) we started to see Magneto's with more English sounding accents across media, voice actors putting their own spin on Ian McKellen's accent. Pre 2000 Magneto had a more American accent. With a character like Magneto who was taken from his home as a child during the holocaust and raised within the confines of a polish concentration camp. You'd think he'd develop a German accent, as he is German or even a polish accent. But it seems like his accent was something he lost overtime, developing a more American accent by the time he was an adult. I should point out that Magneto's holocaust background was only added in The Uncanny X-Men #150 (1981) so it wasn't apart of his other 18 years of Comic/Animated history. So old Marvel cartoons would depict him with an American accent and this kind of stuck moving forward, though you could make the argument that Magneto on X-Men '97 has a slight accent to his voice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Magneto Thoughts: Love that the show is highlighting a Magneto who is willing to change and walk the path of Charles Xavier, Magneto has always been a character who walks the line between heroism and villainy something you'll recall from the films as well but it's nice to see him fully trying to be a hero. Magneto refering to himself as "The Master of Magnetism" is something I didn't know I needed but now I want to hear it spoken in live action. And his quotes and dialogue in general is some of my favourites. That whole speech to the UN being a personal highlight for me. Only gets better from here out. Whoever drew Magneto needs a raise. Rocking his Uncanny X-Men #200 (1985) Standing Trial attire thats pulled right out of the comic. This was one of the first images of X-Men '97 that was revealed to the public so the outfit got mixed reactions at first but it grew on me right away, though nothing will top his iconic red and purple outfit but damn does he look good in his Trial outfit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rogue & Magneto: Rogue and Magneto having a "history" was news to most people, including anyone who watched the original series as it never touched on this aspect of the comics. But it is from the comics, will not go into detail for spoiler reasons but it creates drama and that's what X-Men '97 along with the X-Men comics do so well. It's very much one of those stories that divided fans. Some people don't mind this past history while others believe that Magneto is far too old for Rogue. I personally don't mind it but Gambit will forever be my choice for Rogue. For anyone who hasn't read the comics then it's a pretty big shock to find that Rogue and Magneto have history. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Morlocks: The Morlocks are Mutants who cannot hide their Mutations. The "unlucky" ones who can't pass as humans, compared to most of the X-Men who can. So they live underground in sewers and tunnels thanks to being the main target of Anti Mutant groups like the Friends of Humanity. The films explored this a tiny bit with X-Men: The Last Stand featuring Magneto recruiting the Mutants in an old church. Though I can't recall if they were called the Morlocks in the film. Leech the kid Magneto rescues in this episode is the same kid from X-Men: The Last Stand with the power to negate the mutant abilities of others. Though in the movie he looks like a normal kid. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cliff-hanger: This was such a shock for everyone, can't wait for Ep3 it's one of my personal favourites. Again will not say anything else for spoiler reasons. But exciting stuff moving forward, show does a much better job at adapting comic book storylines than the films. I know a few people who haven't watched the show think that we only recommended this series for an Ep5 reaction. That's very untrue as the whole series is amazing, Ep5 is simply a stand out episode that just happened to get an Emmy nomination. But the whole Season is great, hopefully Season 2 continues this trend.

LittleGalaxyBoy

I hope you watch two episodes at once if possible.
