Let's Watch: Arrival

Happy Feature Friday Folks!

It's time for Arrival! I watched this on Prime Video, for those who are watching along with me. So glad I was able to revisit this. It was so much sweeter and sadder than I remembered.

As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Original Movie: Arrival

Comments

Always waiting for someone to watch The Arrival with Charlie Sheen, so bad, but so good...

Vega

This is certainly one of my favorite movies. ^__^

Daniel Drew

if you like Denis Villeneuve and you like twists you HAVE to watch Incendies. i was thinking about that movie for weeks after i first saw it

David Rosas

nat they are bringing the bird because if it dies then the atmosphere is dangerous or the canary and the coal mine crap. i think its one in the same. bird is to detect danager .............. come on man

MJ Eid

All this talk of aliens and conspiracies makes me wish we’d get an X-Files reaction

Amália Coccia

Might've been answered already. The bird in the cage is a "canary in a coal mine". Miners used to take canaries into coal mines as a way of detecting poisonous fumes or gasses. If the canary died, you'd want to get out asap.

adrianR31

Your mic is doing that thing again. White noise cutting in and out.

adrianR31

Great reaction as always! I know it still hasn't won a poll yet but I am still hoping on a Donnie Darko reaction at some point. It is set around Halloween so could make for a fun reaction in October maybe? I really think you would enjoy another mind bender of a movie like this one and a young Jake Gyllenhaal too!

Dillon Sylvester

Really enjoyed your reaction for this movie Nat. Watching it for a second time you really do appreciate Villeneuve's mastery of complex storytelling as all the pieces fall into place 😊

Darryl Low

Children of Men needs to make it into a poll too. I think Nat would love it, especially given her filmmaking background.

pedantech

nice reaction Nat, I was very surprised you didnt get the canary reference at all lol..

Ben Curran

When I first saw the email notification that you had watched this from my Patreon app, I instantly thought, “Nat is going to melt with the sound design of this movie.” I rewatch it myself sometimes just to be immersed in the vibe the sound and music gives.

James McKey

Thank you Nat for helping me understand this film, I remember watching it when it came out and I got so confuse🫤, and now after watching it again with you I managed to understand what was happening. Thanks again Nat

Baggie Mark

Yes unfortunately the birds are used to detect something that may kill the humans, if they stop churping RUN!!!!

Baggie Mark

Idk about that intro nat, took it out of the oven too early. 😂

Nathan Elkin

That’s fair, good point. Appreciate the respectful rebuttal 😁

The Mad Icelander

Watched Sphere as a kid and had nightmares for months!!

Amália Coccia

Alien life in our universe? Plausible, maybe even probable. Have they visited Earth? I don't believe so, due to lack of compelling evidence. There's mountains of BAD evidence, usually in the form of hearsay, and shitty, out-of-focus, grainy, shaky photography. That and most people's desire to feel special and/or interesting. Ghosts, aliens, Bigfoots, etc. are mysterious and exciting, lack of them...isn't. It's a REAL conversation stopper. Nobody wants to hear a story or watch a movie about an unhaunted house. "There it is...just...standing up...keeping the rain out....neat, huh?" 😁

Keith Jacobsen

Hey Nat, I'd really love to see a reaction to Civil War. Same Director as Ex Machina

Alex Caudill

Discussions about Time and our perspective on it are always interesting to me. And the idea of pursuing something you know will end in tragedy just to experience the joy those moments of love give you, and that doesn’t invalidate the experience… ugh “I loved you, you loved me. The rest is confetti.” - Haunting of Hill House 🥹

Daniel McGuinness

I’m the same as you when it comes to Aliens: Believe they’re real but I couldn’t care less about UFO theories or whatever bc wtf am I gonna do? I have a job 😂

Daniel McGuinness

bahahaha

Natalie Gold

bahaha I've literally heard of the canary in the coal mine thing so many times and somehow FORGOT about it while watching this

Natalie Gold

so glad you enjoyed it!

Natalie Gold

omggggggggggg I can't believe I didn't get this reference lol

Natalie Gold

Yeah I get that, but in this case she forgot so much that it may as well have been an initial reaction. The big important stuff she didn't see coming

Mike Adams

To understand the bird, look up canary in coal mines

The Dingo

As much as I love as his other movies, this one is my favorite by far, I ofc love the time aspect but also just the different approch to "first contact" situation, its just amazing, just being complelty peaceful and trying to get huamnity to work together and using language to make it happen and show how important perspecitve and real understanding is. Its just such a perfect movie in my opinion. And also a great reaction as always! Have a great day yall.

samuel Jakob

Did that smart ass response make you feel better!? lol, wow. No need to be a prick about it dude. I wasn’t being rude or disrespectful to anyone, just posting an opinion. Your comment reflects someone who took my comment personally 🤦🏻‍♂️ Nothing I said was mean to anyone. Have a good day & be kind to people. Smh

The Mad Icelander

Did that make you feel better typing that? I didn't see first time in her title. Guess I've never understood people who feel the need to share their passive aggressive opinions. It's weird.

Kevin C

Contact is so good, when I came out of Arrival in the cinema the first thing I thought was "this was fine, but it's not Contact" Would love to see that on the channel

Chris Cooper

Sphere is such a great movie, and honestly could work for Natmares even too, it can be a creepy movie

Michael Bergeron

dangit! i got teary-eyed the instant the music started

vlocke67

Hi Natalie, I see you liked Arrival. I would like to recomand you to watch Contact (1997), made by Robert Zemeckis and staring Jodie Foster and Matthew MaCconolie. A great movie, worth the two and a half hours.

Adrian Serengau

So cool to see you revisiting this without remembering the twist. Which btw doesn't exist in the novel this is based on. It's told linearly there and I love Denis (or Eric Heissere's) idea and how he does it. For me this still remains even after 8 years and after more than 20 rewatches the best movie I have watched. Bradford Youngs camera is perfect and the sound design tells its own story. Furthermore it is Johann Johannson's last collaboration with Denis before his death and I loved his soundtracks (e.g. Sicario, Prisoners). The prominent violin theme in the beginning and end though is On The Nature Of Daylight by Max Richter. I adore that theme, which is why I play it on the piano making myself cry :) Additionally this theme is also used in Shutter Island, which also contains a house at a lake (some kind of water), a similar loss the main character has to deal with plus the same theme in those scenes... it threw me off and made me feel the weirdest connections when I first watched Arrival, since in its core these movies are completely different :D

KaffeeKind

As a Sci Fi Nerd I never understood this movies hype, a good friend of mine absolutely loves this film, but I never took the time to watch it until now. MAN did I miss out on this movie. If it wasnt for you Nat, I would probably have never watched it. What an interesting thought experiment wrapped in a Sci Fi story. Bravo. Its story isnt even all that complicated but it just provokes these thought journeys about it. Hard to explain my feelings but it was definitely an experience. Well lemme just stop rambling on. Good reaction enjoyed it! :)

Rogier Oude Heuvel

I know it's a slim chance, but I hope this trend of science based movies continues and maybe Contact or even Sphere gets into a poll...

AlimarM

I love this movie so much and regularly rewatch it. Everything about it is just brilliant even with knowing the ending. The score especially is peak

Danishprince

Guess I’ve never understood reactors reacting to a movie they’ve already seen, even if it was a while ago. Kinda defeats the purpose of a first time reaction in my opinion. But to each their own.

The Mad Icelander

The bird is a "canary" to give early warning if there is something unsafe happening, as they used to do in coal mines to check for carbon monoxide: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentinel_species

Chris Cooper

Re: The bird, look up “canary in a coal mine”!

XanderWhat

Love this movie. Amazing concept and fantastic execution by Denis Villeneuve. And very classic classic sci-fi, ie, introspective and full mystery and wonder. Sci-fi movies post Star Wars became a bit action heavy I feel.

Andy

Can't believe they made a whole movie based around the first level of Halo 3 :O (I've never watched Arrival)

LittleGalaxyBoy

CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW EXCITED I AM RN, this is gonna be a good one😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨
