Original Movie: Howl's Moving Castle

It's only for ghibli films that you should watch dubbed! Miyazaki spends millions of dollars making sure the dubs are worthy of his film so that "people can focus on the animation," especially this one is amazing!

Isaac Harvent

Although loosely based on a novel, this movie was influenced by Miyazaki's opposition to the Iraq War (he also famously didn't accept the Academy Award for Spirited Away because of Iraq)

Perrin Rademacher

Lovely reaction as all of the Ghibli films have been. I'm biased as loving Spirited Away as it was my first movie but this is a close close second. Beautiful concept, amazing animation, a story with heart. Also, since I grew up with Spirited Away with the Eng dub and am partial to it just because they usually add things that just send it home for me (like the end of Spirited Away, the last line. It's not in the sub, which makes me sad). Can't go wrong either way though, but I find for a first watch dub tends to hit home for many. Can't wait for many more reactions to these beautiful movies!

I wasn't much into the English dub at first but I eventually got into it. There were a few moments of voice acting that didn't convince me much but overall it was enjoyable! This movie is very near and dear to my heart no matter the language it's in. :) ultimately happy to rewatch it with someone who enjoyed it so much!

I'm sorry, but for Ghibli I'm always partial to the English Dub 😭. I loved this reaction and I'm so glad you liked the movie. "Find me in the future" "There you are. I've been looking all over for you" 🥰🥰

Julia Burch

LOL just started this and I think Nat is trolling us a lil bit because as the movie starts she asks about the Boy and The Heron like hey what's up with this Oscar winning movie, how did it do I have not heard anything about it....

Baron

Its crazy that people are telling you to watch the dub over subs. Subs are always just way better in general when it comes to keeping to the original films script and style. Of course some Studio Ghibli movies are ok in English dub, but always go sub if possible.

Noctis

Love that you're continuing your Ghibli journey! I hope you decide to watch Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies with original Japanese audio tho, since those two are set in Japan

jon

Loove the English dubs for Ghibli films specifically. adds so much character and the jokes hit.

Maximilian

This is one of the most recognizable theme songs ever written. Joe Hisaishi is the composer for most of the scores you've heard and loved in Ghibli films. And orchestras having Ghibli events are pretty common now. Definitely recommend.

The Boy and the Heron is great and one of the better ghibli films maybe my personal favourite you should add it to the poll if you do more of these patreon exclusive ghibli/anime movies and if does end up winning please please please watch it in dubbed the cast is stacked and its done beautifully.

Herb123

First time watching Howl eng dub. Usually biased towards the jap dub, but tb, I prefer the english to the japanese! Hope you check out more anime when you finish getting through the rest of the big name Ghibli, Your Name should be high on that list :P

kikoyito

I’m so glad you went for the dubbed version on this one!!

Kcia S

Even though I only watch the Japanese versions, I think theres a guide somewhere where it will tell you which version is preffered as a general consesus

Josh R

I couldnt sit through the english dub tbh. After about 20 minutes I switched to the Japanese version lol. Hope you can get onto laputa castle in the sky at some point

Josh R

I do really love this movie. I grew up with the novel its (loosely) based on as one of my favourite books and so the first time I watched it I was frustrated by all the differences but rewatching it on its own terms I was able to appreciate the blending of styles. Part of the idea of the book is Sophie is the oldest of three sisters and because she lives in a fairytale universe she is convinced she will fail when they all go seek their fortunes. It’s very meta, at one point she visits our world and meets some boys playing a video game based on the moving castle. I think Miyazaki is referencing classic fairytale movies like Wizard of Oz and Beauty and the Beast as a way of adapting source material that does the same thing with literary references.

Jacob King

This was the first time I sat through the dubbed version from start to finish, and it definitely was not better than the original. Billy Crystal was the highlight but even then there were parts where it didn't quite work. I don't think big names are more valuable than dedicated voice actors. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I hope you continue watching these. Especially Nausicaa which is my favourite.

Pirateman

NAT, you probably already know, but just in case, Deadpool 3 launches on digital October 1st, NEXT WEEK. FYI

Keith Jacobsen

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is Hayao Miyazaki big start and one of his greatest movies... done in 1984,,this is my pick next, then castle in the sky, totoro, kiki, Arrietty , cat returns, ponyo, and the boy and the heron - his newest and one of the greatest.

Kraackin

damn she listened, The Dubs are the way to go with Ghibli. They have all big names dialed in. Cant wait for Nausicaa, castle in the sky, cat returns, and the boy and the heron...i think the masterpiece on top of a crazy career from Hayao Miyazaki. Nat should watch this one last to see his career

Kraackin

You should definitely check out more anime! There's something for everyone and since you haven't seen much it's like an untapped gold mine.

Kristian Perkins

Cannot wait to watch this tomorrow!! SO GLAD to see you thought it was your favorite I feel the same way 😭 so much love and camaraderie among the characters

Sam Winkler

Thank you for going with the English dub.

djKENTO

What a pretty reaction! Happy you decided on the English Dub for this since it really does add more to it. You should definitely watch the English Dub for Spirited Away because the voices really add to that one as well.

Wade Wallenstein

Love this movie, I hope you get around to castle in the sky at some point, as you said you love the music in these films, and castle in the sky probably has my favorite piece from any of the ghibli films in it.

samuel Jakob

Love this Movie and your Reaction, BTW this film is loosely based on a Book with the same name from 1986, They did take a lot of liberties though. But the book also has sequals. Its definitely a good Book series to read as well. It was written by British Author Diana Wynne Jones. The series has 3 books: Howls Moving Castle, Castle in the Air and House of Many ways and all 3 are worth reading!

Rogier Oude Heuvel

Happy Thursday Nat. Looking forward to watching this one with you at the weekend when I have more time. Really been enjoying the Studio Ghibli journey 💛

Darryl Low

I would love your reaction to Ghibli's "Tales From Earthsea" someday, please :)

YannickWega

You caught the story of this one much better than I did my first watch through. I know you're a burning man enjoyer and have mentioned psychedelics before but these movies on 🍄 is absolutely incredible hahaha ✌️ English dubs help with immersion more for me

Brandon Tracy-Hurst

Sooo happy you enjoyed this one so much!! It’s my favorite too! You should check out Kiki’s delivery service and ponyo! Also your name which isn’t a ghibli film but also really great! I really can’t express enough how much I appreciate you giving these anime films a chance recently!

Kubochaan

Also has an amazing cast as well, hell it has two Batman actors and The Joker, Mark Hamill himself. I did prefer Across the Spider-Verse myself but I loved The Boy and the Heron as well.

LittleGalaxyBoy

I think the general reception of The Boy and the Heron was pretty positive. It won the Golden Globe for best animated movie over the Spiderverse sequel last year and I believe it deserved the win. You should definitely watch it and it also has an incredible english cast.

Nathan Kholamian

This is the kind of film that I would never have picked to watch had it not been for Nat, so thanks again Nat for doing these shows and films as it has definitely widened my exposure to these genres.

Baggie Mark

This one is my favorite as well it's the reason why I started learning piano

justajester

My neighbor Totoro next.

adrianR31

YES, NAT. YES. This one is magical.

adrianR31

I like this as well. I will watch... someday, lol We all have different tastes, for example I'm a fan of Nausicaa.
