FIRST TIME WATCHING: Longlegs

Hey folks!

Happy Feature Friday and welcome to the first Natmares flick! This one was...interesting. I wasn't able to edit the outro in time for the release here on Patreon, but suffice to say I had some issues with this one.

This movie definitely scared me a few times, though, so prepare your ears for some screams, haha.

Looking forward to hearing what y'all thought of this one. As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

This is on Hulu now so gonna watch it!

I'd also like to add that Thanksgiving is great too, having finally seen it just recently. Though Natalie should look at the context of it having started off as a fake movie trailer during the 2007 Grindhouse double feature. Also, she should look into the 2007 Grindhouse double feature. I'm not sure if the whole thing is available on streaming all as one thing. But the individual movies Planet Terror and Death Proof are worth it, as are the fake trailers featured in it. (I think the trailers are on YouTube.)

Nicholas Sulikowski

I thought Natalie might like it partly due to her being unsettled by Nicolas Cage's performance. I've read about other people laughing at what he did. But she was unnerved, like I was.

Nicholas Sulikowski

I was surprised that your final analysis of the film was that you didn't like it, considering how on edge and spooked you were throughout it. I personally loved this movie if only because there was a vibe throughout it that made it feel uneasy. It was a haunted movie. I didn't really have any major issues with the plot, though I guess I can see why some might. But overall, this movie sticks in my mind.

Nicholas Sulikowski

The cinematography was good, but it wasn't my cup of tea. It wasn't even a tiny bit scary or shocking to me. The story was very very "meh" and yes, everything was hammy AF.

Jules Readner

The Ring is a good choice for Natalie. I would also recommend Smile, because the sequel is releasing this month. Smile is incredibly intense and has a crazy reveal at the end. It would be a very entertaining Natalie Gold reaction video!

Rod Reavern

I wonder if Natalie caught the devil figure hidden in the shadows throughout the movie, or that the veiled dolls' eyes glowed yellow before fading? Natalie didn't react or call them out, so I wonder if her screen brightness or room lighting negatively affected what she could see. I watched this movie in the theatre and it's a lot easier to catch these things when the theatre is dark and the image is 30 feet high.

Rod Reavern

Longlegs is like many "horror" suspense/thrillers from the past 10 years: Well directed, competently acted, enthralling suspense, incredible artistry in shot composition, set dressing, and hidden symbols everywhere, and masterful sound design doing most of the heavy lifting. Small-budget horror movies are how many writer-directors get their break in Hollywood. However, Natalie was right that the story was somewhat familiar and predictable. A movie with a relatively small cast makes (no spoilers) certain characters more conspicuous, especially when there are so many flashbacks and references to the protagonist's past. Regardless, I enjoyed it and Natalie's reaction was very entertaining. I noticed when I paused the movie during the end credits -- because Natalie didn't do an outro -- the cast included "Adult Ruby Carter". Ruby Carter was the 10-year-old daughter of Agent Carter, the lead FBI investigator. A grown-up Ruby Carter never appeared in the film. The fact that Agent Lee Harker didn't destroy (no spoilers) it -- the whispers implied it wouldn't let her -- which presumably means Longlegs' dark designs continue. Perhaps a flashforward of adult Ruby Carter, possibly as an FBI agent, was originally filmed but it was cut from the movie? Intriguing. I own the HD Blu-ray (gotta have physical media!) and I'm eager to watch the special features.

Rod Reavern

It was alright. I like all the subliminal images. When the devil was in the shadows hidden throughout the movie. I felt like Lee should have done something at the end, but she just stood there. The twist was interesting, but over all not something I'd recommend unless you're a horror fan. It's like a 5 or 6 outta 10.

UngawdlyJish

Late Night with the Devil is incredible. Easily one of my favorite horror movies of all time. And Trick 'r Treat is a gem as well.

Nicholas Sulikowski

I liked this one, it's a pretty solid thriller/horror movie, but it's also nothing we haven't seen before. Starts out really strong and I had high hopes for it but then nothing special happens, it just ends. Oh well. My favorite movie in this genre is still The Ring. Natalie should watch that one. It's by Gore Verbinski, the Pirates of the Carribean guy, so how scary can it really be? :D

Freshly returning to the Patreon after my sub ran out a couple months ago. Happy to be back! :D I haven't watched this movie before. I'm hoping that it'll be a good one. I'm pretty much in the dark with it as I have no idea what it's about or who's all in it. :/ lol, should be a good one though! From the title I'm picturing spiders.. and that I'm not too hyped for but we'll see. xD Oh yeah! Natmares! I completely forgot about that. :) Good times. As a non horror movie fan this may be the wrong month to sub. xD lol! You'll be fine, Nat! :) I swear - if this contains tons of jump scares I'll feel bad. xD Not for Natalie but because I'm not really wanting a horror movie. xD No idea what that was all about! xD You're disturbed, already? Yikes, this'll be a fun one. :) Watching this in a cold ass room is not ideal. lol, all I want to do while watching this is to wrap myself in a toasty blanket. Mariners fan? Is this based in Seattle? It's a cloudy day so it's possible. lmao - this may've been the wrong movie to start off with as my first reaction back. Manson didn't have a family, he had a dedicated cult following. This agent is very socially awkward. lol, I knew about all that a young age as well, Nat. Isn't that much of a stretch. :P hahahaha, that's very true, Nat! I'm not a big cabin guy. If I'm out in the woods I'll just take a tent and be happy in that. xD Yeah, no, I'm not scared or frightened at all yet. This is strange but not scary. I don't know - I'll say when I'm freaked out. I didn't read the card. Hope it wasn't vital. That's pretty gross - still not scared though. This movie's making me feel sleepy! xD I'm not super into this one. Not sure what happened. I think that I jumped ahead somehow. No idea. Nothing terrifying happened onscreen yet so I'm a bit confused. Began playing the movie alongside you earlier and it all matched up for a bit but now it's off and I'm in the dark as to why that is. No idea. I'm going to just watch the movie solo, now and maybe figure this out later. If I don't, I'll go ahead and post this, and show why/where I got lost. Yeah, no idea what happened or where it got lost. I stopped watching along with you at this point and just finished it up solo. Wasn't too into it and I wasn't afraid of anything in it either. Fine movie but it just didn't do it for me and I was disappointed that I got lost somewhere during the watchalong.

Cinematography is 10 out of 10. Every shot is framed brilliantly. Story started out great with female agent having psychic abilities. But it fell apart midway and never recovered .

Billy B

Peak incoming!!!

Daniel McGuinness

saving that for a poll soon!

Natalie Gold

Watched it in theater, Maika Monroe very good as usually, but for me they'd crossed scary >> laughable edge. It follows and Watcher are much better on my opinion, subjective suggestion :)

Ihor Krasman

This was my first time watching. It’s definitely atmospheric. I think I agree with you that the ending kind of falls flat. There was room for a more interesting twist. I love this director’s earlier film The Blackcoat’s Daughter, which could be set in the same universe, but also uses a lot more dread in the narrative structure. It was cool seeing Maika Monroe in another horror movie; definitely check out It Follows. Nicholas Cage is clearly having fun; going to repeat my recommendation of Mandy. At one point the mother quotes from the movie Night of the Hunter which is the best 50s horror movie, flat out, and Os Perkins is the son of Anthony Perkins who starred in Psycho one of the best 60s horror movies.

Jacob King

Agreed. I think the tension and that constant feeling of being uncomfortable is where it thrives. Plus who doesnt love Nick Cage acting like a maniac? 😆

Kevin Farrell

I love for you to continue the A nightmare on Elm Street films too, maybe watch 2 & 3 this year. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven's New Nightmare are my favorite of them all

Kyle Turning Robe

I'll never get over the fact that Oz Perkins, the director, is the weird guy from Legally Blonde.

djKENTO

THE DESCENT extended cut would be an incredible Natmare reaction.

mrhalfbit

Hmmm. Surprised by the responses here. I really liked the movie. And let's be real, most horror movies at this point, and even just movies in general, are kinda predictable. We're just too plot savvy as an audience, considering how many movies we watch and analyze just here on this channel. For an effective horror, imho, it's the journey that matters. At least I felt the movie delivered on the atmosphere, tension and suspense.

Andy

Natmare requests would be: late night with the devil, thanksgiving, trick r treat, and the girl with all the gifts

jamie jones

There’s like a thousand sites to stream movies and shows for free.

jamie jones

Definitely wait until it's on your usual streaming service.

Darryl Low

Would love to see Barbarian on the Natmares poll! Such a great horror movie

Charlie

Yar Har Fiddle Dee Dee

Mastervodo

Honestly I’d love to see you dive into some of the horror sequels like Scream 2 x

Daniel McGuinness

The marketing didn’t help this movie tbh. I mean the trailers were good but the constant “scariest movie of the year!” declarations gave me really high expectations, when it’s just another crime thriller in the vein of Silence of the Lambs :/ It’s good! But not the scariest of the year by a long shot

Daniel McGuinness

Hi everyone, is Longlegs worth £16 to rent it or should I save this until it's free on a streaming site?

Baggie Mark

20 bucks to rent is crazy when you can go buy the movie for 25.

Erin Olson

I understand completely Beth

Brian

Could not finish this one.. Very boring movie

OttoBee

Im so ready for spooky season! Late night with the devil and the vvitch are two id love to see make the polls this year

Rey

I made it halfway through this and got bored. And I fucking LOVE Nic Cage

adrianR31

Learn to download torrents. If buying isn't equal to owning then pirating isn't equal to theft.

adrianR31

If possible, I would love to see As Above So Below in a Natmare poll. It's so spooky and really well made

BettleBug

Haven't seen the movie yet but I heard good things from horror enthusiasts (the only reviews I trust😎). Will watch the movie this weekend then watch your review. Happy Natmares 🎃👻

Wally

This doesn't give me any comfort if all she does are digital releases for Natmares, I can't watch it this year. I'd like to be able to enjoy Natmares with her. Its 20 to rent it and so i hope that she does films I can watch because I have over 300 horrors and it would be one I don't have. This is a rarity for me to comment on here on anyone I subscribe to, but I am a shut- in and it brightens my day when I can settle in and watch a movie with her. Thats it.

Happy Natmares Feature Friday Nat. I'm reluctant to give this movie any more of my money as I found it really disappointing, however I will watch your YT video and outro when it's out to see what you made of it. After giving us a truly terrifying trailer, I thought this movie was seriously lacking in scares and any kind of cohesion. I love watching serial killer and detective movies. It gives the writers a chance to really get their juices flowing and get creative in coming up with ways that the killer outsmarts the cops, and how they have to solve the clues. As soon as you make your lead a psychic, you have a detective that doesn't need to do any detecting. Right from the opening scene of her picking the right house immediately I was like "It's going to be one of those movies is it?!" Using the sound design to make you think you're watching a movie scarier than it actually is only works for so long. And Scooby Doo writers could have come up with a better finale. The marketing departments for both this movie and this year's Civil War deserve awards for duping the audience into thinking you're going to watch a very different film from what you actually see. The problem with that is. the movie you have in your head beforehand is so much better than the one you actually end up watching, so you're always going to come out disappointed. These 2 movies were high on my list for best films of the year, but they are now high on my list of worst films of the year. Thanks as always for your awesome work this week Nat. Look forward to the livestream tomorrow 💛

Darryl Low

It's pretty rare she does these but I get the frustration. Pretty sure the next natmares are gonna be all polls like this week's poll

PrayTellCaesar

Nat, i can't watch this one because its too new and i can't afford to rent it, so i hope u can do some older ones or ones that are already streaming and aren't just digitally available because i wanna see the rest of ur Natmares films. just putting in my 2 cents.
