FIRST TIME WATCHING: The Bourne Identity

Happy Feature Friday!

This one was a pleasant surprise! Enjoyed it a lot and can't wait to see what y'all think in the comments. For those that are curious, I watched this on Prime Video.

As always, thank you for your support here on Patreon. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Original Movie: The Bourne Identity

Comments

Are you guys ok? I'm so worried about my West coast Americans.

Thomas Shepard

Couple of things: When Jason didn't kill Wombosi, you made the point that he was still dead and his kids were still without a father. The thing is, if he went through killing Wombosi, he would have had to kill the kids there as well. That's the line he didn't cross. Jumping up like that is called a "Kip-Up". John Wick used pencils, not pens. Probably to avoid IP infringement. :)

Mastervodo

You mentioned Mr and Mrs Smith in your closing, i think that was a super fun movie to check out

vlocke67

Natalie dont discount the tiers. Hire an editor on contract for one month and record everything and let them edit it. Find a T.V. and watch the whole season in a day, change clothes during episodes and then send them the footage and don't mention anything that will reference time. That way you can have a series to pull up on months like January that you can release. Backflow.

Jonathan Martin

been waiting for this from you for YEARS. subbed to the patreon to watch the full thing, cant wait for you to watch the whole series its incredible!

Byron King

How to do a "kick up" Okay Nat, you have to roll back pretty far until you're on your shoulders and neck. In the usual way you place your hands on the ground next to your head elbows up. Your body is tucked in basically and you push up while you unfurl at the waist. When you've extended in the air, if you're flexible you can quickly place your feet underneath you and voila! A pro can do it without the hands though. All of the motion is generated from your waist but you have to roll back pretty far on your neck and shoulders basically. Roll back slowly... and use your strength to push against the floor.

Natalie I have this bad headache... but watching you watch this movie the pain is receding back. Where are those Treadstone pills lol. I have heard of articles that describe the Bourne character was heavily influenced by his combat skills and martial arts philosophy. (Bruce Lee enters the chat). When we see two cops asking for papers grab Bourne, there's a closeup of his face where he realizes he can control them. He then proceeds to manhandle them both simultaneously. There are descriptions of Matt training in "the way of the intercepting fist" the martial arts system that Bruce Lee developed called Jeet Kune Do. A mysterious form only talked about in hushed whispers. In this philosophy you "intercept" your opponent's attack. There is a directness in his movements. If you recall the "pen" fight, Bourne moves forward and literally intercepts all of the blows coming at him by taking the shorter path 😆 (Researched using Grok AI)

Jason Bourne movie series 1-5 for me... Associated with a book series, but only by use of a few names. The Movies have really NOTHING to do with the books. 1 is a stand alone movie and best of them all. 2 and 3 go together as sort of part 1&2, good but you have to like the shaky-cam. 4 is a stand alone but without shaky-cam and has a great mixture of underlying stories. To me 4 is very underrated as a movie but it is true that is a not "Jason Bourne". 5 is just make Jason Bourne "popcorn" with extra explosions and super-tech.

Skyruff

I am happy to pay full price

Thank you for the thoughtful reaction and review. The Bourne Identity (and its sequels) had an impact on action cinema, popularizing (in Hollywood) handheld shots and dynamic framing and creative fight choreography. Not everyone loved every interpretation of this style. I like Bourne for its echoes of 70s conspiracy thrillers and its moody visuals and prominent score. In the sequels you'll see that Paul Greengrass pushed what Doug Liman established, to mixed effect. A healthy dose of credit is due the writer Tony Gilroy. His writer-director turn "Michael Clayton" (2007) starring George Clooney is not to be missed.

Chet Brusk

Julia stiles was also in silver linings playbook. Really good movie

C. J. Ramirez

Excellent reaction Nat! Always loved the Bourne movies, or as they are know in my family The Bjorn Movies, it’s easy to forget that this was a surprise summer blockbuster movie that had serious legs but almost cut Matt Damon’s career short. No one was ready to buy Matt Damon as an action movie star but word of mouth was great so it all worked out and the decade of clones this movie spawned is proof enough. Hope you react to the rest of the trilogy and avoid the rest. For my money nothing is on par with the first movie but next two are certainly worthy sequels in their own right.

Ryan

I enjoyed your reaction to TBI very much. I hope thing are looking up for you soon. Blessings!

Steve

Thanks so much! Hope things get better, you’re a great reactor and I wish you all the best!

WackyJacky

Gotcha. I’ve just seen some earlier comments where people were talking about downloading the reactions from a link or something that she had used previously, so I was just curious if it was still possible~

Jasmine Oswalt

Idk the actual answer but if I had to guess sometimes, when reactors start their channel they don't know whether it's gonna be successful or not so therefore they react to said film and don't bother making a Patreon, they just edit the reaction and post it on YouTube, and dont bother to save/upload the full length to Patreon, Lord of the Rings was one of Natalie's earlier reactions

dieselbeast

I have a question… I would like to watch your reactions to the LOTR movies but can’t seem to find them anywhere. Is there maybe a reason why they’re not up on Patreon? Just curious. Hope you’re having a great day!

Jasmine Oswalt

you really should watch Mr and Mrs Smith from the same director

oscar latorre

This was a fun reaction. Bourne really defined early 200s action movies and especially with the later ones and all the copycats it started to seem a bit hacky. Part of the success of John Wick was it brought in a different style. Watching it this time I was thinking about it as a Frankenstein plot and they were definitely leaning into that with Damon’s square head. Run Lola Run is one of the best films of the 90s. Strong recommendation from me. Doug Liman’s Go (1999) is one of the most 90s films of all time. It’s pure liquid joy.

Jacob King

The Bourne series is so well done, story just keeps getting better, same as the action. I hope you watch the rest, just be ready for change in directing style, its a love it or hate it thing when it comes to Paul Greengrass lol.

Noctis

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is also really good, since you said you hadn't seen those before.

Andrew Cave

Couple of thoughts. 1) I was so happy to see Natalie’s mood improve when she realized she was watching a Good movie. That cheered me too. 2) Natalie did you notice a young Clive Owens and Walter Goggins in the cast. I hadn’t seen this in years so they were unknown to me then 3) Franka Potente was brought in on the strength of her performance in the German film Run, Lola, Run 1998. I really recommend you check that out. I know you’re into film. It’s fascinating.

Troymk1

Yeah it sounds like a gate or auto mixer.

adrianR31

Don't know if it's just me but I've noticed there's a lot of audio static in the reactions lately whenever Natalie doesn't speak. I don't know if it's the settings of the microphone or some noice cancelling software that only picks up when she speaks and blocks out everything else.

Danishprince

well...

Andy Scotschdale

One of my favorite movies, I'm really happy you're watching them (knock on wood for the next two), and that you like this one.

Andy Scotschdale

About Robert Ludlum, it's such a shame that no one tried adapting The Road books, such a hilarious and witty books. Road to Gandolfo and Road to Omaha are my favorite books of him. But I guess the time has passed since I don't think the studios would adapt those books well in the current societal climate.

AlimarM

I def think and vote that you check out the rest of them

Chris Capitano

One of my favorite trilogies! Right under LOTR, in my book. I am one of the minority of people my age who actually read the books before I saw the films. One thing to remember is that Robert Ludlum, the author of the books was heavily involved with the films until he passed away. The books were written in a different time, with different issues for governments and three letter agencies to address. Ludlum realized that he needed to re-tool the character and the story a bit in order to better connect with a larger present day audience, and I feel that it pulled that off pretty well. In the novel, Bourne was not actually an assassin per se. He was a member of a secret US government unit trying to take out a real world assassin named Carlos the Jackal. (also the novel takes place in the late 70's/early 80's, the real life Carlos was apprehended in 1985 so it wouldn't have made much sense to have him featured in a story taking place in the early 2000's). In fact, Bourne's character in the book ran around taking credit for murders that he didn't commit in order to try and goad Carlos into a confrontation where the Treadstone team could neutralize him. There are a few things that annoy me (the typical small details....). One of those things is how a shotgun shell blew the shit out of a large propane tank....absolutely ridiculous, in my opinion. Another thing about the professor, when he finished off wombosi, if you look at the window in that scene from the assassin's perspective, you couldn't see IN to the house because of the glare from outside. I am looking forward to you continuing the trilogy. I personally wouldn't bother with the other two.

David Bennett

I agree that this is one of the very few trilogies that get better with each movie, which is incredibly rare.

Giancarlo Gasparin

Oooh, I know there’s no set date for the rest of the trilogy, but I can’t wait for them ❤️❤️ These movies are just SO GOOOD

Elle

Great reaction, Nat. Really fun, and it looked like you were enjoying yourself. I'm sorry that your back has been bothering you, and I hope life starts treating you better soon. The movies are loosely (very loosely) based on a series of novels by Robert Ludlum. As in, they share the same titles, but the plots are almost completely different. Also, just so you know. If you get motion sickness watching movies, the 2nd and 3rd movies might not be for you. They're very good movies but might not be the best for those susceptible to motion sickness....

Chris Gronau

When Nat finds out it’s not a trilogy… there are technically 5 of these and a tv show…

djKENTO

Glad to hear you are going down Bourne's rabbit hole and hope you check out Mr & Mrs. Smith too

JarHead0351

Very much an aside but the Zurich bank account, the point of a numbered account is that there is no name on it. Its for protecting the account holder identity.

Azure_Sentry

Awesome reaction Nat! I hope things are well

Brian

I actually am a fan of all 5 "Bourne" films... with the following caveats. 1) The 4th film, "The Bourne Legacy is a really solid action film with most of the same elements that make the original trilogy great, but it doesn't have Jason Bourne in it. Had they called it something else, I think Bourne fans would like it more. And... 2) The 5th film, "Jason Bourne" is a great film WITH Jason Bourne in it, but the directorial and cinematographic styles are quite a bit different from the original 3. I'm ok with that, but it doesn't feel as comfortable as the first 3, or at least as familiar. I recommend watching 1,2,3 and 5 for sure. Watch 4 if you like. I think you'd still enjoy it a lot and it has really good performances from Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz.

Richard Rolen

So the Bourne movies are based on a series of books written by Robert Ludlum. Robert wrote a ton of books!

PopeyeNelson

Thank you Nat :)

Derder

My god. It's Jason Bourne. There's actually 5 movies, and while the first 3 are the "main" ones, I think the 4th one is pretty underrated! At least Tony Gilroy was still involved. The 5th one.... Well, maybe you'll see it some day.

XanderWhat

I still maintain that this is the best entry in the series. I vastly prefer Doug Liman's direction over Paul Greengrass' ultra-shaky-cam style.

K.N.

I'd more more worried if you did NOT get cranky when your back hurts. That'd be some Jason Bourne level control like diving down three flights of stairs.... Ouch.... Also having it cushy doesn't invalidate anything what you feel, there's always someone who has it worse or better. Anyway, take care!

Kevin

"Smarts, don't fail me now, Training don't desert me, Shot in the back, now I'm clear... Money from the safe Passports full of choices Everybody knows I'm here.. This conspiracy is really vast... On this mission... To my paaast..." I'm fully on board with the Anastasia/Bourne Identity crossover. Have the old guy singing, "♪In the dark of the night, agents will find him..."

Troy B.

I just wanna say you look SO “over it” in the thumbnail lol hope you’re feeling better

Mike Hell

I definitely have it pretty cushy compared to some, but thank you! I just get cranky when my back hurts haha

Natalie Gold

Great reaction Nat! You gotta finish the trilogy!

Steven Hok

Still a fantastic movie, but the second one is better than the first, and the third is better than the second. Three straight-up spectacular spy thriller/action movies, with just the right touch of realism, and Matt Damon somehow owning the screen with as little dialogue as possible. Good shit.

Steve Mercier

Definitely seemed like the movie helped improve your mood, and glad you enjoyed it. It was a really fun reaction. Hope your back starts to feel better soon too, back pain is the worst. Also, don’t know if you’ll ever get to watching it but the screenwriter for this movie and the rest of the Bourne trilogy is Tony Gilroy who is the creator and showrunner for the Andor series.

Michael Bergeron

Awesome reaction. Love this movie. I definitely recommend the rest of the trilogy. It nicely rounds out the story. Although sequels are often weaker than the first installment, I've heard plenty of people say that the second or the third of the Bourne movies is their favorite, so this trilogy might be an exception to the rule. The first movie might be my personal favorite because of the moody and mysterious beginning, but it's hard to decide. The other two have qualities that the first has little of. Suffice it to say the whole trilogy is great. Cheers, and take good care of yourself.

Max

I can't imagine how hard it is to create content when you have mental and or physical health struggles also going on. Praying for you and positive vibes. Thank you for all the cool stuff you do for the community :)

Shaun Bloom

lol, poor Natalie.. I totally can't tell that you've got any acne going on right now. You're beautiful! :) Yikes, I'm sorry about your back pains! Those can be terrible during this time of the year with the cold/chilly weather. Hope you can manage it throughout the movie! You're awesome Natalie1 Appreciate the thought! I'm surprised that you've never watched these before! They're fun movies. :) I saw each of them in theaters! xD I can totally frown! lol, in a way it's a superhero origin story. Bourne's super impressive. xD If you had a glasses sponsor, that would've been the time to talk about it! I love this movie so much. :) "Whoa, he's cutting them open?! BITCH! WHY YOU DOIN' THAT?!" xD Love you Natalie! hahahaha xD "We're gonna call him Matt for now!" I've never been to Europe before! Went to Asia and had an amazing time there but haven't checked Europe out at all. "BRO!! JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD!" xD You're awesome Natalie! hahahaha lmao, this isn't exactly that type of movie Natalie. xD lol, the copy that I"m watching doesn't include subtitles at all so I'm in the dark with everything that isn't in English. I'm thankful that I've already watched this before. :P :) Glad that you're enjoying this one Natalie! I've always been a fan of it. You've gotta remember that this is old, Natalie! lol, we old folks are used to grainy ass pictures! We didn't have 4k/1080p widely available! :P lol, this is years before podcasts Natalie! I'm actually not sure who wrote this either. This is NOT a Disney movie, Natalie! xD lmao, wow.. I'm nearly positive that something like that exists online. This movie did a LOT before John Wick. I LOVE 10 Things I Hate About You! hahahaha, that's easily my favorite movie with her in it. lol, prolly because it takes place in Seattle area, where I'm from. I love the music in this scene! It's so thumpy and cool! xD Early 2000's is right, yeah. I saw this while I was still in highschool so before 2006. Yeah, for real! They did a great job with this chase scene. :) Big props to all involved. Being fair, he didn't know what he was getting her involved with either = and he tried to distance himself from her as well. lol! Yeesh, Natalie.. "This is kinda romantic." lol, the suspense is real for sure. xD I can't stand the timing on the video, Natalie! xD I've lost track of where the timing was and since it's blurry as hell I can't place it! lol, sorta frustrating. This is all from a book series back in the day, not sure if you knew that already or not. If you've got the money to blow - go for it! xD Love how this movie works and that the lens choices give you anxiety! :) It makes me happy seeing you enjoy this movie Natalie! This was once of my faves. GLAD THAT YOU ENJOYED THIS! I'm a fan of the other movies this director has done! He's a talented guy. The music/sound design in this WAS PHENOMENAL! I'm glad that you appreciated it! :) Treadstone PROGRAM, not project. :P Production was great as well, yeah. The scenes were shot so well and everything was placed well. :) The woman, Franka - she did an incredible job. No idea who she was/is but whatever, she did an awesome job playing her role. The comedic moments were genuinely funny and entertaining. :) They always bring a smile to my face! xD Don't feel too bad Natalie, I've got the memory of a goldfish. I'm looking forward to the other movies! This one's my favorite of them all but the rest are plenty good.

Logan Kerlee

Out of the original trilogy, i thought identity was the worst one

jamie jones

Glad you finally watched this and enjoyed it! I remember seeing an interview with Damon a few years after this came out and he said that if this film wasn't a hit, his acting career might've been over. He'd just made 3 movies in succession that didn't do anything at the box office: The Talented Mr Ripley, which flopped (good movie, though), Legend of Bagger Vance, which flopped hard, and Titan A.E., which also flopped pretty hard. I hope you'll watch Supremacy and then Ultimatum eventually. You can skip Legacy and Jason Bourne as those are just kind of extra after the excellent trilogy.

Mike Hell

This was shot after Oceans 11, and I am always struck by the difference between the two characters. When The Bourne Identity became a surprising hit, the other actors gave him shit about it in Oceans 12 (in good fun, of course)!

David Martin

Bourne was John Wick before John Wick and imho is one of the greatest Action Trilogies to this day. Take care Nat

Curaitis

I forgot this was coming up. Also... who am I?

Jay Davis

So pumped to see your reaction….kinda redundant since I’m a subscriber.😜

Bryan Erickson

I want to see this 😊 I think Damon was feeling the character's hand-to-hand style and abilities. He was grokking it, to use the old terminology, meaning to have a deep understanding even the philosophy of this style of martial arts.

Mannygogou

These movies got better as they went for the first three. Ultimatum is, for me, the absolute peak of the franchise and one of the best action movies of the 21st century.

Jeff K

Hello there. Damn, it has been so long since I last watched this movie. The first three movies are amazing and the fight scenes are very well done. The fourth movie is alright. And I think the fifth movie is pretty underrated. It didn't do anything new but it's still a decent movie.

Adithep_Jay

Happy Feature Friday Nat. We're here to listen to you. Let it all out. We appreciate you telling us what's going on 😊 Great to see you back in your home from home. I haven't see this movie probably since it came out, so I'll enjoy re-visiting it with you over the weekend. Thanks as always for all your great work this week. Enjoy your weekend Nat 💛
