FIRST TIME WATCHING: The Bourne Supremacy

Happy Feature Friday Folks!

Happy to dive back into this trilogy! What are your thoughts on this film? Do you prefer the first one or another in this trilogy? I think I still prefer the first film over this one, but the twists and turns were super enjoyable with this film nonetheless. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Original Movie: The Bourne Supremacy

Comments

Those last two movies are ... not good, so no, it's a trilogy for me.

Rime Pendragon

Jason bourne is not a trilogy its a quadrilogy

Jonathan Martin

Do yourself and us a favor and just watch Ultimatum next

Jason Dolan

Hi Nat, just wanted to say that I am glad you are back posting. I hope the fires did not impact you too much and that you and your are safe and doing well. I truly enjoy watching your content, you are a joy!!! Thank you very much and keep up the great work! Nick

I'm glad you are finishing off this trilogy and that you enjoyed the chaotic style that Greengrass brings. I'm usually not a big fan of shaky cam for action movies, it always feels like a lazy way to film a choreographed fight or chase scene by just throwing quick cuts and edits to hide the fact that the action is bland or that the directorhas no clue how to film. But for a Bourne film, it was very well done and actually worked to intensify the scenes. It also helped immensely that the choreographed fights and chases were well planned and thought out and they hired people who knew what they were doing. The style lends itself well for a suspenseful movie like this one. Btw Matt didn't hate the 3rd film, he hated the draft that Gilroy submitted for the film, it was reworked and fixed while they were filming.

Noctis

I disagree. The shaky cam adds to the tension. It can definitely be overwhelming and make fight scenes impossible to follow, but in this case I think it was just enough.

Franz Liszt

I approve of this executive decision, and I loved the reaction. Looking forward to Ultimatum.

Max

Ultimatum is by far the best of this series

jamie jones

I did laugh at the start when you are saying I just wanna watch a good action movie nothing to heavy and I was sitting here thinking.... ohh dear this is 100% what she thinks it will be! 10 mins in you are crying saying WTF hehe. Great reaction tho Nat!

Ben Curran

That is a really fun movie.

David Sumner

I disagree. The shaky cam here is just as bad as in any other 2000s action movie. The Bourne Ultimatum is a bit better but not by much. I just don't like Paul Greengass's work.

David Sumner

I absolutely hate shaky cam. The camera work in this was godawful, virtually impossible to follow. This is the movie that really kicked off the trend in Hollywood in making every action movie a jumbled mess. With a few exceptions, like Casino Royale, nearly every non-superhero or historical epic action movie was shot and edited incomprehensibly. Hollywood simply refused to make good action movies for nearly a decade until the success of John Wick. This movie was the most prominent starter of that trend, and I am so glad that it's (mostly) over. Also, I hate that they killed off Marie in the first 10 minutes. Their interaction was on the most interesting aspects of the first movie and there was a lot they could have done with her character. It retroactively makes the first movie less enjoyable.

David Sumner

Loved your reaction, Natalie! Such a good film in one of the best trilogies out there. If you haven't watched the movie Sicario, with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro, I would highly recommend it. It's a spy-adjacent thriller, very good flick.

David Bennett

I love the Bourne trilogy so much. Back in the day a lot of folks thought Supremacy took ShakyCam past immersion to confusion, particularly during the apartment fight -- but I think time has shown this flick used it to good effect, whereas copycats took the wrong lesson from it, i.e. that fast-cutting ShakyCam can be a quick and dirty substitute for good fight choreography. The trilogy's scoring was also a step forward, still thematic and unapologetically dramatic but more rough-and-tumble and angry than cool or heroic. "Funeral Fire" from this film in particular is one of my all-time favorite bits of scoring. Given the specific things Natalie has said she enjoys about this film, I am giddy with anticipation for Ultimatum.

Chet Brusk

Additionally, the pistol shot at long range was also a good shot later in the movie... the pistol wasn't designed for that kind of long range shot yet Urban's character made do with what he had handy.

Michael Labs

Was ripping my parents dvd collection this week and realized they had the whole bourne trilogy which I hadn't seen in a decade or so-- at least I won't have to pay to watch along this time!

Chris Jarrett

Mr and Mrs Smith would be absolutely fun to add on a poll!

Heliastein

I believe it was simply making the third film that Matt Damon didn’t like. The original script he felt was completely unusable. They reworked the script and had to change a lot mid production. He felt like it was going to be a disaster. All in all they were able to pull out a solid movie in the edit and it ended up being a big success. It’s possible he didn’t like how it turned out still, but it’s considered by a lot of people to be the best.

WackyJacky

Absolutely love every time he does his creepy I’m watching you lines. Can’t wait for you to see more in the next movie.

WackyJacky

Super enjoyed watching this with you Natalie! :) I actually really liked the third - more than this one, that's for sure. Of course, that's also my opinion after first watching the movie many years ago in theaters - so I could be way off! xD Afterall, I remember enjoying this one the least among the three. I don't remember why.. but that's how I felt way back when. :)

Logan Kerlee

Glad you enjoyed this, especially that you like the shakey cam, I also dont always love it if its used badly but I feel the same way as you do, it just fits the movie so well and gives you a real feel for how messy everything is. I hope you have a great day!

samuel Jakob

Yes, I thought about that later! So tragic

Natalie Gold

Really enjoyed your reactions for this one Nat. Looking forward to when you watch Ultimatum! That one is my favorite of the trilogy

Steven Hok

Just wanted to say that Oksana Akinsjina plays the grown up Neski daughter. She had the main role in the Lukas Moodysson film Lilja4Ever; a film I genuinely believe that is a film everyone should see once (though once is enough as it is real heavy, particularly as it's based on a true story and depicts a reality for all too many women).

Tarjei

Happy Friday! So glad you’re continuing this series! I enjoy all 3 films, but I think Ultimatum is still my favorite. Honestly, I think Legacy isn’t a bad film either, and I’d recommend giving it a watch if you’re still looking for some fun Bourne-style action, just with Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz swapped in for Matt Damon.

Mike Hell

Hi Nat, really enjoyed your reactions to this movie. I'd forgotten how little dialogue there was in this movie, it jumps from action scene to action scene... think I need to sit down in a dark place to calm down lol.

Baggie Mark

I am glad you got to this one sooner than later! And if you hit the Ultimatum one soon after, that is great. You could try the next 2 after - but they are unnecessary. Julia Styles does in fact have a bigger role in the next film. And we get Pamela back. Who, other than Jason, I have to say is probably my 2nd favorite character of the series. The guy Jason fights with the newspaper IS the guy from the end of the last film. One thing that Nikki says that no one else in the movie seems to "get" is that Jason doesn't make mistakes. "They don't do random". You could find earlier in the film the exact moment Jason learns about the student protest, and recalls that information to use it for their "meet" instantly when he needs it. There's always an objective. When he used the passport in Italy, he intended to be captured, because he knew someone in Langley would contact the agent holding him, and his whole goal was to find out who. They really didn't realize from the start that they weren't hunting Jason. Jason was hunting them. If I would have had an opportunity to add one thing as a writer for the next movie, I would have had someone get a call from Jason, and immediately have that character be like, "Jason Bourne? OH FUCK! You can see me can't you? Where are you?" while spinning around trying to figure out where he is. I do think the coolest moment/line in the trilogy is "It's easy. She's standing right next to you. *click*".

Mastervodo

Great call!

Bryan Erickson

This is definetely my favourite of the Bourne films, so glad you're doing more than just the first one!

Tarjei

The first three Bourne films are right up there as far as nearly perfect trilogies go, but I agree the first film is superior to this one. Really hope you get to Ultimatum some time soon, I think that one might actually be my favourite of the three.

Chris Cooper

Karl did not have bad aim. Last he saw Bourne was driving the car. By switching seats with Marie Jason doomed her.

Michael

I think the story of the first one was better, with Jason and Marie's relationship.. it's been awhile but I don't remember the other movies having that sort of emotional core... they are more action/thrillers, still very good though!
