Your highlights reaction to this movie appeared in my YouTube feed, I watched a few minutes and thought that you sounded interesting, liked your sense of humor so I decided to watch the whole movie with you since this is a childhood favorite of mine, first seeing it when it came out on HBO in '82-'83. You remind me of my best friend's mom, who would watch scary movies with us when we were in grade school back in the late 1970's. She would fill the room with her commentary, shouts, screams, etc. while my friend and I would be too scared to say anything. Her noise was reassuring actually and so was listening to you while watching this tension-filled flick so thank you. I'm looking forward to watching more movies with you. 😀👍

Although the assimilation is almost the same there's no emotion leftover from the host and that's how you can tell from those movies. Here in this movie The Thing is able to make a perfect imitation so that you don't without some kind of test.

2020-10-05 09:52:47 +0000 UTCMany on here have already mentioned it, but if you are interested in finding out what exactly happened to the Norwegian research team as well as learn more about the Thing's modus operandi, I recommend checking out the 2011 THING prequel starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead & Joel Edgerton. Also you mentioned at the end of the video that you had an easier time with watching a cartoonishly gory movie, then might I suggest the late Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR, inspired by the works of H.P Lovecraft and starring my all-time favorite scream queen Barbara Crampton.

My personal favourite ties into the chess game we see MacReady playing at the beginning. He is white, and gets checkmated by black - then "wins" by breaking the game with the drink. The theory goes that he's "white" at the end, Childs-thing is "black" and he's been checkmated... but he's actually drinking poison at the end, and offering it to Child's to make sure the thing doesn't "win".

John Carpenter scores his own movies, his soundtrack for 'Halloween' is pretty iconic. I hope you're watching that one, it literally invented the slasher genre, so is a bit dated but still a classic.

But I read an interview years ago that the original screen play had a scene where you show MacReady and Childs getting back to civilization and it shows that they are both Things. I think Carpenter even filmed the scene. After I read that I went back and watched the end and after Childs drank from the bottle I remembered that even a single cell could infect someone. I pretty much figure now that the "MacReady" who handed Childs the bottle was The Thing.

It doesn't rely on gore, thousands of gallons of blood, special effects, or jump scares. Though it needs some, it is mainly centered around a great story, intellectually involving for the viewer, that prays on mistrust, paranoia, and self preservation. Great credit to the original.

2020-10-04 01:40:36 +0000 UTCTheres an interesting theory that at the end of the movie when MacReady and Childs are sitting there in the cold waiting to die, is that MacReady suspects that Childs is the Thing and what is in the alcohol bottle isnt alcohol but kerosene and thats why MacReady laughs because he knows that Childs is the Thing. had a great time watching with you, was fun.

2020-10-04 01:36:50 +0000 UTCThe excellent score was done by LEGENDARY film composer Ennio Morricone, who is probably most famous for his "spaghetti western" scores ("The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly," etc) and is indisputably one of the greatest of all time. He just passed away earlier this year. Carpenter, the director, is actually a pretty well known film composer in his own right! If you watch any of his other films, it's likely he scored them himself!

First time watch and I think this was perfectly acceptable entertainment and a reminder of what a badass Kurt Russell was in the early 80s. This, Escape from New York, Big Trouble in Little China, lots of stuff. Personally, I loved Overboard if you want more fun light hearted Kurt after Nightmare Fuel. For next year or even for another time, there’s the 1956 Thing From Another World, which this borrowed heavily from and was a big part of the 50s sci fi wave along with Forbidden Planet, War of the Worlds and Day The Earth Stood Still. If you ever have a retro month, there you have it. Stay spooky, Natalie... and pleasant dreams?

And the score was by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone, who only just passed this July, and who'd been composing for films since the '50s. What makes this more interesting is that The Thing is one of the relative few films for which director John Carpenter didn't compose the score himself. There are only a handful of directors I can think of (Charlie Chaplin, John Carpenter, Clint Eastwood, Robert Rodriguez) who often score their own films. Here's hoping The Exorcist wins the next poll!

Did you notice at the very end of the movie that you could see the steam of Mac's breath, but you didn't see any steam off of Childs' breath? Hehehe, now will you go back and check that out? My brother and I stumbled upon this movie when I was 5-6 years old(This was in 1985-1986). I only saw about 10 minutes of the movie. But it was not just any 10 minutes. It was the kennel sequence. All of it. The movie was being aired unedited on PBS if I recall correctly. We did not have cable, so there were very few channels the movie could have been on. I have no idea why it was being aired. So right after the sequence ended, we were called to dinner, and my parents were really mad that we watched it. I think I actually watched the movie for real around 12 years later, in high school. It has been a staple of mine since.
