What scary movie should kick off this Halloween season?
Added 2020-09-29 02:42:34 +0000 UTCHey guys!
It's that time of year! The time for candy corn, costumes, and cozy sweaters!🍁
(Unless you live in a warm state like me and it's still 80+ degrees...)
But most importantly....it's time for SCARY MOVIES!!👻🕸🎃 🕷 🍁
(Maybe, if I act like I'm excited, it'll trick my brain into thinking I'm brave and I won't be scared this month? Eh...prolly not.)
REGARDLESS, onward we must go, as I have promised that we will watch some spooky/suspenseful/scary/and (p)sychological thrillers this month! So please! Help me pick which movie we should start with....and until the next one, STAY SPOOKYYYYYY👻 👻 👻

2020-10-05 23:50:39 +0000 UTCI’ve actually never seen The Thing. One of my greatest failures. It would be GREAT first watch
David Miles
2020-10-03 16:21:39 +0000 UTCIf Nat can watch The Thing, everything else is easy peasy.
Darryl Low
2020-10-02 20:06:24 +0000 UTCThe Thing yes, but everyone does it. The exorcist on the other hand... I’d like to see that again it’s been quite awhile.
Sean Cope
2020-10-02 16:06:06 +0000 UTCNot really a scary movie per say, but Donnie Darko is a good Halloween movie. Not just mindless horror or jump scares, it's spooky and interesting. If you do watch it, Directors Cut only, theatrical version missed a bunch of stuff that explains a lot of important stuff.
Vonlinchen
2020-10-02 04:31:31 +0000 UTCThe Thing is my favorite horror
Ray Riddle
2020-10-02 01:08:46 +0000 UTCI agree with above about Shaun of the Dead as a scary movie for Halloween.
Rob Farley
2020-10-01 23:52:24 +0000 UTCHey, nat I know your doing the thing first but i just joined and was hoping to suggest the conjuring series if you haven't seen them.

2020-10-01 11:33:24 +0000 UTCDefinately A Nightmare on Elm Street.......it's a classic....
Nathan Fares
2020-10-01 05:45:04 +0000 UTCThe Thing is one of my favorite horror movies. So...uh good luck haha. Also, consider watching Cabin in the Woods. A lot of horror films are fun and campy, but this movie is actually pretty good in itself.
Andrew Layden
2020-10-01 00:18:57 +0000 UTCLook, I love The Thing, I really do. But to throw this at Nat first? You guys are sadistic. I voted Halloween. Sadistic.

2020-09-30 22:15:07 +0000 UTCIf you haven't watched Shaun of the Dead, you should watch it this Halloween! It's a British comic-zombie film. And if you enjoy it, there are 2 more in the trilogy to watch: a cop film and a sci-fi movie, same cast, etc!!
Quarty
2020-09-30 20:38:55 +0000 UTCi completely agree.
Armchair Wizard
2020-09-30 20:35:58 +0000 UTCIf you have never seen it, Cabin In The Woods by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. It's meta, sarcastic, stars Chris Hemsworth, funny, scary. It literally has it all.

Gregory Coburn
2020-09-30 11:34:43 +0000 UTCIronically, they did the practical effects for the movie then someone (i think the producers) said we need to overlay crappy cgi effects over it. so it loses it's charm
Gregory Coburn
2020-09-30 11:33:31 +0000 UTCit's got to be john carpenter's the thing, it's an iconic and great movie
Gregory Coburn
2020-09-30 11:32:01 +0000 UTCI suggested the same thing. I figure that the humor in Part 2 would make the scares more bearable for her.
Thundarr100
2020-09-30 04:43:46 +0000 UTCI voted for Friday The 13th, but judging by the numbers it looks like you're probably gonna be doing The Thing first (also a personal favorite of mine). You might want to do 2 reactions per week during October. One scary movie followed by an episode of Firefly as a "palate cleanser". Just a suggestion.
Thundarr100
2020-09-30 04:42:00 +0000 UTCI voted for Halloween, but since you like Alan Tudyk so much.. maybe "Tucker and Dale vs Evil?"

2020-09-30 01:05:02 +0000 UTCI think it would be awesome to watch Evil Dead 2 with you! you can Skip EV1 (good but essentially same plot but w/out the humor that makes EV2 so great)

2020-09-29 21:34:33 +0000 UTCOn the next pole you should definitely consider 2010s Let Me In amazing horror flick

2020-09-29 20:32:35 +0000 UTCI haven't watched a ton of horror, but I was able to pick up on most of the tropes in Cabin in the Woods. Though I admit there are probably a ton of references I missed because of this.

2020-09-29 17:44:37 +0000 UTCI love the exorcist but I think the slower, but necessary, first 30 minutes puts people off watching it
2020-09-29 17:40:00 +0000 UTCOf this batch it has to be The Thing, no question. Another scary movie I would like to see you react to is Dead Alive (AKA Brain Dead) directed by Peter Jackson. It’s a masterpiece of odd comedy and gore. My grandmother used to turn her head away if a character in a movie had a paper cut, but Dead Alive is so over the top she was riveted to the screen the whole time. It’s been on my Top 5 favorite movies for over 20 years. Please watch this.
Pete Bowers
2020-09-29 17:26:04 +0000 UTCThere's The Thing and then there's everything else. Go with The Thing.
Paul Gardner
2020-09-29 16:58:29 +0000 UTCA good one that's not as scary, not gory and funny at the same time is The Frighteners with Michael J Fox. Good one to fit in between the scarier ones.
Ron K
2020-09-29 16:55:25 +0000 UTCi like it a lot, but it absolutely has WORSE special effects because it uses slightly bad CGI where the original uses Practical Effects that still look good.
Armchair Wizard
2020-09-29 16:22:04 +0000 UTCLooks like we are starting off with The Thing. Those Antarctic winds will take Natalie's mind off the heat ;)

2020-09-29 15:46:55 +0000 UTCIf you haven't seen The Thing 2011 by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. I recommend it. It's a prequel and ends at the beginning of The Thing by 1984 John Carpenter. It is more horrific than the 84 version (better special effects).

2020-09-29 15:07:03 +0000 UTCA Quiet Place, Get Out, Pan’s Labyrinth :-)

2020-09-29 13:09:45 +0000 UTCI see lots of people suggesting Scream, Galaxy Quest, & Cabin in the Woods. Those are great movies and can be watched and understood by themselves, but they also satirize and pay homage to their genres. You'll get more out of it if you watch some 80s slasher movies before Scream, Star Trek before Galaxy Quest, and a wide variety of horror before Cabin in the Woods.
Ken
2020-09-29 12:59:53 +0000 UTCThe Cabin in the Woods would be a good one to pick up. It is co-written and produced by Joss Whedon and has a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth.

2020-09-29 10:09:31 +0000 UTCI still think that if Spooptober gets too stressful, splicing it up with "so bad it's good" horror movies could help a bit. My vote goes to "Troll 2"

2020-09-29 07:52:19 +0000 UTCLove the scary stuff. Still, hope we get a movie or two of happy-ish Halloween movies. Nightmare Before Christmas, Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic, Beetlejuice, The Adam's Family. I don't even mind if you have seen them before. The re-watching of Iron Man 2 was as fun as a first time watching of the other movies.
Tranquil_Gnome
2020-09-29 07:26:54 +0000 UTCId prefer she watch the Prequel first, that way she isnt totally unindoctrinated for it. Besides, I love when she screams at the people to not go into the dark, locked room.
wallace cady
2020-09-29 07:07:45 +0000 UTCOh man. Haha. The Thing, and the vote is not even close. I am very much looking forward to watching this movie with you, but as another comment said, perhaps we should work our way up to the movie. Watching The Thing with a person new to horror movies is like throwing a baby in a pool lol.

2020-09-29 06:54:48 +0000 UTCTHE CELL is an amazing film, but I don't know if I'd consider it a horror movie.

2020-09-29 04:49:20 +0000 UTCThe thing doesnt even come close to being Halloween's fecal matter
SaltyShapeerVessel 2.0
2020-09-29 04:45:29 +0000 UTCI love The Thing . . . BUT you really should watch Halloween before The Thing. You get a better idea what John Carpenter is capable of without the huge, gory, insane (but amazing) creature effects. Halloween is very, very simple and creepy, not in the least gory. People just want to see you grossed out. Except for The Exorcist and The Thing, you'd benefit from watching these in chronological order. Seriously. All unique, important choices, though, except Friday the 13th...
Brad Bunch
2020-09-29 04:35:31 +0000 UTCThe Thing is by far the best movie in this list. It transcends basic horror. Total winner from my perspective! Remember, it won't seem slow to you anyway since she will edit her highlights.
Max du Coudray
2020-09-29 04:35:26 +0000 UTCI never watch horror movies. So I'm watching these for the first time with you Natalie. Someone tell me everything's gonna be alright
It Hurt A Lot
2020-09-29 04:34:12 +0000 UTCThe special effects in The Thing still hold up to this day. Awesome movie I watched it many times.

2020-09-29 04:31:56 +0000 UTCIts boring.. Imo but everyone has an opinion..i think she should get into the walking dead show

2020-09-29 04:24:24 +0000 UTCits a good movie. Id personally would go with the exorcist. Classic with good amount of shock value.

2020-09-29 04:11:30 +0000 UTCThe exorcist was called the scariest movie of all time, but it’s a very different horror movie.

2020-09-29 04:08:39 +0000 UTCThe Skeleton Key and Scream are some good horror movies....The Skeleton Key more psychological

2020-09-29 03:57:47 +0000 UTCThat is a very underrated 90's horror movie. They just did a version of it on Lovecraft Country.

2020-09-29 03:49:33 +0000 UTC"Upgrade" is an AMAZING movie! So is the new "Invisible Man," also by Leigh Whannell.

2020-09-29 03:40:57 +0000 UTCI am like you Natalie, I hate scary movies! I vote for a few not as scary movies that are still within the thriller genre or maybe even ones that just tie in with a Halloween theme. Maybe The Sixth Sense if you haven't seen it, The Mummy (Brendan Fraser version 😆), Hocus Pocus?
Shadow Queen
2020-09-29 03:40:35 +0000 UTCAnyone here ever heard of 13 ghosts? No only is it a fine example of ‘90s horror (lol) but I would lay a serious wager that Natalie hasn’t seen it.

2020-09-29 03:29:02 +0000 UTCI can't believe the two best movies on the list are in last place!
darby72
2020-09-29 03:28:50 +0000 UTCHalloween is a classic. Very carefully directed, and is often considered the first slasher film. The thing is really creepy, and has great practical effects, but for Halloween, how can you not watch Halloween?
TamaMetalPuppet
2020-09-29 03:25:30 +0000 UTCGotta go with the original John Carpenter's Halloween from 1978. The Exorcist didn't do anything for me(and I'm Catholic!). I've enjoyed some of the Nightmare On Elm St and Friday The 13th movies, but I can't say I'm a "fan" of either series. And while there's a lot to like about Carpenter's take on The Thing, I was always partial to the Howard Hawks move from 1951, "The Thing From Another World". Yes, Carpenter's is MUCH closer to the original story. Yes, it's MUCH scarier(the 1951 movie is much more sci-fi than horror). But I have fond memories of watching the '51 Thing on Saturday mornings on the local tv station that would rotate through old 50's sci-fi. The two big ones for me were "The Thing From Another World" and "Them!". But the original 1978 Halloween? That movie is still one of my favorites, and it STILL gives me the willies. It's so simple in many ways, but oh so effective.
Patrick Egan
2020-09-29 03:25:28 +0000 UTCI would add Evil Dead 1 and 2, then maybe monster house as a kids one to watch, the sixth sense, the silence of the lambs and the fly to name a few
Kinda Confused
2020-09-29 03:21:36 +0000 UTCNightmare on elm Street, Haloween, and Friday the 13th are all just generic slashers..... BUT The Exorcist and The Thing are Horror masterpieces
Peepee
2020-09-29 03:20:16 +0000 UTCI love the Saw movies, too! I know some people complain about them after 4 or so, but I loved the episodic nature of them. I think some people wanted them to be stand-alone, because a lot of horror sequels are, and before the MCU, people weren't as open to cinematic universes. I think Saw III, in particular, is a pretty smart missive on the toxicity of holding grudges. I also recommend Upgrade, if you haven't seen it, directed by James Wan's co-hort Leigh Whannell.
Andy Jordan
2020-09-29 03:19:40 +0000 UTCTrick R Treat is a great scary movie anthology.

2020-09-29 03:19:29 +0000 UTCTucker and Dale vs evil is really funny as well

2020-09-29 03:18:16 +0000 UTCI would flippin die if you watched bubba ho-tep sometime. That's a really good Bruce Campbell horror comedy. Or behind the mask: the rise of lesley vernon
Ronny Boss
2020-09-29 03:17:02 +0000 UTCI would say "The Exorcist" is the first modern horror movie. By that I mean I think it's the furthest back you can go for a classic horror movie that has more elements of contemporary horror movies than any other. It came out before Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Alien, The Shining, and everything else after, and yet it plays more or less like horror movies we would recognize today. I saw it for the first time when I was 10 or so, and it still haunts me. It's a truly groundbreaking film, and Linda Blair gives one of the best child actor performances you'll ever see.
Andy Jordan
2020-09-29 03:15:34 +0000 UTCI'm not all that into horror, but since neither are you I think I brave the 👻. I might have to watch with my guard pig tho to ward off the fear
Ronny Boss
2020-09-29 03:12:58 +0000 UTCI saw the Thing in the theaters when it first came out. The sense of paranoia and claustrophobia combined with the effects was mind blowing.

2020-09-29 03:03:34 +0000 UTCHey girl! I know it’s not on the list but have you seen the Conjuring? One of my favorite movies. Just curious. I think Ed and Lorraine would really tickle you!
Rose Charpentier
2020-09-29 02:59:58 +0000 UTCThe Saw movies are my favorite, just for the overarching storyline that they somehow made work. Friday the 13th is really hit-or-miss. Nightmare on Elm Street is also extremely hit-or-miss. Halloween and Halloween 2018 are really the only two movies Carpenter considers canon out of that series (though he might consider Halloween II part of it, but I can't remember completely). If you watch The Thing, making sure you watch The Thing 2011 because it's a really neat sequel with how they did it. Personally, I don't like newer horror movies like The Conjuring and whatnot because they seem way too demonic for my liking. Same for Exorcist. But Scream is definitely a series to watch, too. Saw, Scream, Thing, and Halloween are really the only horror you need (and this will be an extremely unpopular opinion).

2020-09-29 02:47:47 +0000 UTCI would have suggested The Haunting (black and white version, not the 1999 remake). Psychological and spooky atmosphere all in one.

2020-09-29 02:46:22 +0000 UTCThe Thing for me is the scariest movie of all time. But it’s so damn good.

2020-09-29 02:46:10 +0000 UTCNext consider Scream. It only missed being NC-17 after the director explained that it was a comedy.

2020-09-29 02:45:26 +0000 UTCAs much as I think anyone should only watch The Thing after Halloween (because that’s the order Carpenter made them), seeing your reaction to Aliens makes me very keen on Thing first. I also suggest Scream, which is my favourite slasher!
