Natalie, I love the way you just fly off the handle sometimes! "You fuckin' people just SUCK!!" lol Also I came up with a hypothesis regarding River, the Academy she was sent to and her parents. I believe it's possible that the Alliance gave the Tams (or at least MR. Tam) a couple buttloads of cash for River, essentially selling her down the proverbial river. They / he had probably been assured that River would not be harmed but they could unlock her full potential; the first part obviously a lie, now that we know some of what they actually did to her. I'm goin to message you this theory too since it has been over two years since you posted this and I doubt you have time to come look here. This is for others and you others are free to disagree and put forth your own theories if you have them! Everyone Stay Golden!

There is a whole graphic novel about Book and his life before Serenity. I can only say this knowing Nat has seen the whole show now - Book was an agent, just like Chiwetel Ejiofor's no-name character in the movie Serenity. He had basically a crisis of conscience and vanished (aka the Abbey).

Here's my theory about Shepperd.... He was the General for the Alliance at the battle of Serenity Valley(the one at he beginning of the series, when Mal lost it's fate) and after the massacre that happened there he decided to retire and decided to join an Abbey. The day he steps out of meditating on is life, there's a ship called Serenity that's looking for travelers. Of course he's gonna pick this ship to start his redemption!!!!!(Kaley was so right when she said that he "wasn't looking for destination",)

Summer Glau was equally amazing in another ill-fated Fox series, the Sarah Conner Chronicles (also starring Lena Heady from GoT in the titular role). They actually incorporated her ballet training directly into one of those episodes.

Very fun as usual, Nat. Thank you. Fun fact Summer Glau aka River Tam was a ballerina most of her life. Joss uses that background a lot since River doesn't talk as much. She needed to express things via her body movements. Her first acting role was an episode of Angel, another Joss Whedon TV show. Joss used a few of the others for guest roles on Angel, Buffy, and Dollhouse. Zoe, Mal, Wash, and Jayne.

Very little info is given about the Shepard's history through the series, but they did release a comic with his backstory sometime after the show ended. If you are interested i'm sure its on a wiki somewhere and you can find out about it after you finish the series.

*rubs his hands* much as I enjoyed this episode (by the way, am I crazy or did the parson look like Craig T. Nelson?), next episode is my favorite. I just cannot wait! Witness the birth of my favorite line still used today: “Oh, I’m going to the bad place.”

Some of River's most heartbreaking moments are in this episode. Only Adam Baldwin could make Jayne simultaneously loathsome and endearing. It's rare to have a show cast perfectly from the beginning but Firefly pulled it off. Can't imagine a reboot could ever capture the original magic. Nice to have the fun and emotional commentary during this rewatch.

Did you catch Shepard Book's comment when Mal asked him if he wanted to tell him about his ident card? Book replied, "I surely would. Maybe one day I will." There's definitely a secret there. They're really feeling like Serenity is home, especially Simon and River. The chemistry on set was just a close - most of the actors would hang out in Serenity's galley between scenes rather than going back to their trailers, etc. I think there's some discussion about that on the Blu-Ray extras (not sure if it's on Firefly, or the movie Serenity).
