I am just getting to this two years late, as I just joined the Patreon, but I looked through the comments as this was the one thing I wanted to comment here if someone hadn't covered it. It's my favorite behind the scenes thing about this show. The rescue button if help comes to save the show was such a powerful metaphor. The other was in the pilot episode, Kaylee talking about wanting to get a replacement compression coil because it was going bad, but Mal wouldn't listen, and then here it was what blew. And the music in this episode is amazing. I have the soundtrack CD, and the songs from this and "The Message" are really moving.

Rocky Hinten

I really like PJ Nat'. So many Fucks not given.

Powers209

"I can't hang... the way I used to..." I know exactly what you mean, Natalie BUT!! I am 57 now and had some medical issues... Hang while you can, girl. You're still young... And Stay Golden! ;*

MertzRocks

During your absence for the funeral, etc. I am watching this for the second time with you now and thinking: "Makeup? You wear makeup? What do you need makeup for?" ;) You're beautiful, Natalie, just as you are. Stay Golden. Looking forward to next week and more Game of Thrones!

MertzRocks

also another fun fact, Kaylee asks about getting the part that gets broken in an earlier episode. Its just in passing but its there.

Zathras

Hey Natalie. Fun trivia fact with this episode. That button that Wash rigged up for Mal, Alan Tudyk actually took from the set when they cancelled the show. He then gave it to Joss Whedon with a note saying "when you get your miracle, just hit this." It's supposedly part of what kept Joss inspired enough to fight to get the movie made.

Doug Willour

Hey nat!

Gary

You look great without makeup so don’t even worry about it.

Thomas Malley

If you hadn't said anything I wouldn't have even noticed that you didn't wear makeup. Loved the reactions for this one. Loved how on the edge of your seat you where with all the flashbacks!

Chris Mills

Hahaha this is a great episode to watch after feeling your mortality XD

crawlie

First off, never apologize for something like not wearing make up. You're adorable no matter what. Great episode giving a lot more insight into the crew. It's what makes this series so great. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Robert Avila

Don't forget Nat, take care and don't force yourself! Thank you for this reaction (one of my favourite episode) and stay golden!

Calo Grsf

Fun extra info on the episode (that I remember). Somehow this was planned so Zoe aka Gina Torres had a smallish part because she got married to Laurence Fishburne aka Morpheus from the Matrix during the that weeks filming. Sadly, they eventually divorced in 2018 after about 15 years. Feel better, Nat!

Tranquil_Gnome

Yeah, that's the benefit of naturalistic makeup. Looks great normally, and taking a day off doesn't draw attention haha. Lots of women overdo it, not realizing we don't really care. I mean, if they're doing it for themselves and their social status among other women, then cool. But I see a lot of brides that try to impress on their special day and I'm like, "Gah! Who is that!?" >_< You look great, Nat. Just take care of yourself!

Dan

Not to take away from your previous efforts at makeup, but honestly if you hadn't mentioned it I don't think we'd have noticed. You look totally fine as-sis. As for "low energy", we all have those days, and you can't be expected to be "on" all the time. Just be you, and we'll all be happy, I'm sure.

Troy B.

Why are you apologizing for being human? You take care of you. I’d recommend Prilosec for the reflux, might help a bit. Pepto isn’t bad either. Oh, the show? Would you believe from here on in, I’m with you? Aside from Serenity, I have not seen the rest of the show! Was something for me and a girl to watch together. Started, but never got past here. Be nice to finish. But yeah, great heartfelt episode. And I gotta say, aside from Mail, Kaylee has grown on me as the best character. YMMV. Feel better, ya hear?

Matthew Periolat

My cousin Eric makes a lot of good points.

Matthew Clark

I have several favorites. They are all still ahead. We learn more back story, and move forward in our character development and the mystery of River story arch at the same time. This is so much fun. Thank you.

Geoffrey Cahoon

You are great company to watch these with. Appreciate all the work you are doing on the production side. Lots of work. But just to watch with you is very enjoyable. Glam is highly over rated. You are great just the way you are.

Geoffrey Cahoon

A rollercoaster of emotion and drama to get to the end, but when we get there we really get a sense just how much that ship is home and these people are family.

John

Yep - not one you should watch tired - a real emotional roller coaster. Hope your better, there is at least one more you won't want to be tired for.

Grey Watcher

First, no makeup? Even after you mentioned it, I didn't notice it. Second, at the beginning when Zoe asked, "What's that?" and Mal says, "I think something was living in here".... they were stepping around the same spot that he later collapsed after being shot, so "what's that" - it was him, sort of. - and yes, Krylo is right, Kaylee warned Mal that she needed a spare, almost like they had a plan ... There's a lot of sub-text that they never got to explore, Inara's comment, "I don't want to die at all" is talking about a LOT more than this current situation, but they weren't given the time to explore that part of the character's story.

eric clark

Love this reaction; its def one of my favorite episodes; and if you go back to episode 1; Kaylee warned Mal about the compression coil!

Krylo

Yeah, ‘Ariel’ is my fave, too, but this is a very strong run of episodes.

David Rater

Just settling in to watch now. Can't wait! So glad to be re-watching Firefly with you. Sorry to hear about your feeling down - hope this picks you up a bit.

Neil Silverman

With Joss Whedon in control of a TV series, you can't say, "The series is only halfway through; they can't kill character X." Anyone and everyone is killable at any time if it makes a good story. Not saying that's going to happen or not happen, but just that you can't expect the rules to be followed like other TV shows.

Robert Reichle

I love the storytelling format of this episode, slipping back and forth in the timeline seamlessly. Hope you're feeling shiny soon.

Luis Torrefranca

Hope you feel better soon Nat. Don't burn yourself out. You certainly powered through this episode and got to the heart of the story with your commentary. It felt like the crew of Serenity revived you for your next adventure, when you're ready to go again. Thanks for another great video Nat. Take care.

Darryl Low

Your opinion is certainly valid. And I definitely wouldn't sit here and try to split hairs over two great Whedon episodes. I lean towards firefly but you can absolutely sign me up for a Buffy watch along series!

8bitAndy

the "raw you" is lovely Natalie... no worries there :-) We like your reactions because they're genuine..

Daniel Gauvreau

There are some Buffy-episodes that spring to mind that rival it. "The Body" is not really directly comparable, but I'd just give both of these episodes the title of "greatest 44 mins of TV ever to grace my screen", just because I can. (And no, we shouldn't discuss "The Body" here further, because maybe at some point, Natalie can do the whole of "Buffy", and I'd be all for it.)

Patrick Armbruster

In the episodes up until "Out of gas", you always get the 'feeling' that the crew loves the Serenity – but "Out of gas" puts you, as a viewer, under a lot of stress and shows you WHY they love the ship. And that's a perfect condition to make you, as a viewer, fall in love with the ship. And Mal. And Kaylee. And Zoe. And Wash. It's really a perfect episode.

Patrick Armbruster

Sorry to hear you’re under the weather. Do take care of yourself first – no need to rush or push yourself. Hope you feel better soon. Cheers.

Andy Jordan

Sorry you're feeling under the weather. These days whenever someone mentions a sore throat or feeling tired, I immediately worry they got the beer flu. Hopefully that's not the case and regardless I hope you're feeling better soon. I know you feel like you need to put on that professional, high energy face for your YouTube vieweres, but we're all friends here. Kick back and be your no makeup wearing low energy self. It's all good.

John

Still seven amazing stories to go. Great character development in this one and some of the best scene transitions in television history. If the series had gone on longer I wonder if we would have discovered that Zoe initially married Wash to rid the Verse of that mustache.

Joe Jeffords

I love every episode, but yes, Ariel is one of the best.

Armchair Wizard

On each of the last few episodes someone in the comments has said "the next episode is my favorite," and now it's my turn. The next episode "Ariel" is my favorite!

Tom Evans

Sorry to hear you're a bit out of it. And not that I have an eye for this sort of thing, but I couldn't actually tell that you weren't wearing makeup. Definitely look better than I'm sure you feel. Hang in there!

Matt Rodgers

Far and away the best episode of firefly in my opinion. Maybe the greatest 44 mins of television ever to grace my tv screen, if I may be so bold. Definitely been looking forward to this watch along!

8bitAndy

Time to pretend I'm listening in on my monday conference calls but actually watching firefly :) And somebody sounds like they are "out of gas". Feel better!
