2020-11-22 09:06:04 +0000 UTCNat, this is a terrific movie! However, the Wachowski siblings didn't come up with it! This is based on an Alan Moore graphic novel illustrated by David Lloyd. Alan Moore is notoriously prickly about his work being adapted and, even when done justice, he refuses to bless or acknowledge the effort. Alan Moore's comic output is legendary and dense while the man himself looks like a hale, bearded wizard with intense eyes, furrowed brows and a wild mane of hair. He has anarchistic political beliefs, distrusts most organized institutions and practices occult magic. His body of work is extraordinary and includes CLASSICS like "Watchmen", "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen", "From Hell", "V for Vendetta", "The Killing Joke", "Providence", "Tom Strong" and a substantial run on "Swamp Thing" that not only enriched and deepened that character but also introduced DC's resident exorcist, John Constantine, the "Hellblazer". "Watch", "League", "Hell", "V", "Joke" and "Constantine" have all been adapted into movies. Despite Moore's criticisms, the Wachowskis did an extraordinary job bringing this story to life! Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Stephen Fry, Stephen Rea and John Hurt give tremendous performances. Portman emerging from that dungeon having experienced what the journal writer had is a truly shocking moment. Weaving, although faceless, exudes palpable rage and sadness; his relationship with Portman is a bit like Erik's with Christine in "Phantom of the Opera". Stephen Rea, ever the activist against Irish injustice, plays with the subtext of the fictitious totalitarian regime being not much different from British rule in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Stephen Fry is tragic as a man who thought himself insulated enough from horror that he could safely poke it in the eye. Casting John Hurt as the dictator was brilliant because he memorably played Winston Smith in the Michael Radford film version of Orwell's "1984"! V wears a Guy Fawkes mask to honor the 17th-century Gunpowder Plot which was foiled then but succeeds in the movie by blowing up Parliament. The fateful day was November 5th hence V saying, "Remember, remember, the fifth of November." Brits today burn Fawkes in effigy to commemorate his capture but Moore celebrated his anarchism and created a dystopian British police state worthy of being burned to the ground. The graphic novel and movie inspired the Fawkes mask as a symbol of populist uprisings like the Occupy Movement. People call him Anonymous now and I'm willing to bet many who wear the mask are unaware of the historical or literary source. It was during this shoot that Natalie Portman was reading David Mitchell's "Cloud Atlas". She recommended it to the Wachowski siblings and they were instantly hooked. They made it into an extraordinary film with Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Doona Bae, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Susan Sarandon. Since you appreciate the Wachowski sensibility, I highly recommend it. I think it's a masterpiece!

2020-11-14 19:59:45 +0000 UTCGreat reaction, as always :D Vendetta's a very foreboding movie, isn't it? I was wondering if anybody suggested "Gattaca" as another movie to see? It's got SO MUCH to think and talk about, on top of being a visual and acting masterpiece :) Thanks again! will skip to Thor now ^^
