I have refrained from commenting because it did not seem to matter since you have already finished and wouldn't likely see the comment anyways, but I have to voice this. I get that any character, even Sansa, can grow and develop into a better person, but this show made her character seem nicer than she was from the beginning. Sure, there have been small hints at her mean snobby personality, but for the most part her better than everyone behavior was cut out of the show. Especially the way she always treated Jon like a bastard as well as her cruelty towards her shorter boyish less pretty younger sister Arya. Sure in the scene in this episode, especially without all the context of the real Sansa, it comes off as Arya just threatening her sister out of nowhere (even though Sansa is snooping through Arya's things in Arya's room) but Arya wasn't wrong, there were subtle instances before Jon left for Dragonstone where Sansa was clearly upset that the northern lords chose the bastard Jon Snow to be their king in the north over herself, the oldest living trueborn child of Ned Stark. I am sorry, but I dislike Sansa's character, disliked her from the beginning through the end, she is a horrible, selfish, stuck-up girl who feels entitled to the best of everything and feels that she is better than everyone because she is a pretty highborn lady.

To answer your question, The showrunners decided to cut out travel time in the last few seasons to focus more on storyline so that's why we're not seeing them travel from place to place as much but they're not really acting like time is passed they're acting like it's the same day so that's the one thing that's messed up with it.... The last few seasons seems very rushed to say the least. And the star is the episodes in the last season they're more like 90 minutes so you're getting more episode just not more episodes

Jayson Orlando

I ain't going to lie this episode took a lot out of me when I first watched it..... Viserion never saw that arrow coming, and what's the night king ... the beyond the wall javelin champion??? For real though! The thing with Jon is he could withstand cold just like Daenerys can withstand fire, That's why the ice water didn't really hurt him!

Jayson Orlando

Cauterizing the wound? Hello?

Asking

they use fire to cauterize the wound, thats why they burnt thoros

Spegy

Polar bears are massive in real life, so that zombie bear was probably pretty accurate.

Jennifer Tremblay

Great question by Natalie this episode. "How TF is he/Jon going get out of this mess?". There is an easy answer to it... plot armour.. Jon's armour is so powerful he like Beric Dondarrion is immune to death.

DarkJokester

I like the Romeroesqueness 🤓 of these zombies/whytes, the notion that zombies retain just a little bit of their personality after turning makes them even creepier in my opinion. I thought that's how that lone short faced polar bear happened to be wandering alone, it was a whyte but maybe the fact that it had been a wild animal made it less controllable for the Walkers.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Last 2, he's already hinted at 3 and the way were going we'll not even see 1.

Paul Gibbons

This season and the next really ruined the show for a lot of fans. There should have been a least three full seasons to wrap up the major story lines, the long night should have been it’s own season! The same with the Danny’s story, should have taken a season to wrap it up. Our only hope is the books redeem the story, if the last two are ever published

The Heathen Jay

Benjen could have just run in a tangent direction from Jon. He's a wight so can run until the other wights give up. No reason at all for him to sacrifice himself the way he did. In fact, running away with the other wights chasing him would have provided more of a diversion to let Jon get away.

Tadpoleaxe

Benjen can't pass the wall. It was his time, he told Jon that the easiest he could

Jack

What... about the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Jesse Arnold

Ugh, I hate D&D for making the two most important seasons, shorter. I think the initial plan was 10 seasons, but they didn't want to do GoT for that long. This narrative NEEDED at least 3 FULL seasons to properly finish this story. Having said that I do enjoy season 7, but we all know that narrative and character development dives off a cliff in season 8 in favor of unnecessary spectacle. What could have been....

JerME

Gendry easily runs a full day's marathon to get from Jon and Company's location back to the Wall. Gendry then proceed to tell the people on the Wall the exact coordinates of Jon and Company. The Maester writes this information down and sends a Raven to fly all the way down to Dragonstone where Daenarys is. The estimated distance between The Wall and Dragonstone is around 1,800 miles. A raven can travel around 25 miles an hour. Let's say the raven travels the entire distance without any rest or sleep, going 25 miles an hour the entire time. That would take the Raven 3 whole days to get to Dragonstone. But obviously, a raven can't fly for 24 hours every single day. Estimates say a raven can travel up to 100 miles a day before it needs to rest. So, with this in mind, it takes 18 days for the raven to reach Dragonstone. Daenarys then reads the letter and jumps into action. She hops on her dragon and immediately flies off to the Wall. I don't know how fast Dragons fly, but let's say it's twice as fast as the raven. So Daenarys would reach the wall within 1.5 days without any rest, or within a week with reasonable rest for the Dragon. Daenarys then has the arduous task of finding the exact location of Jon and Company somewhere a marathon's distance from the Wall. All in all, the entire time that has past has been between 5 days and 25 days. Meanwhile, Jon and Company have been stranded at the center of a frozen lake surrounded by Wights and White Walkers the entire time. They should all be dead, either from the cold or the Wights. Also, the White Walkers should have been chucking spears at them the entire time. Keep in mind, this is all in service of one of the dumbest plans ever conceived. A vain attempt to win Cersei's support, with the chances of success being at absolute zero. And then Benjen gets killed off, because the writers need to start cutting off loose plot threads. And then we have the Arya and Sansa feud, with CW levels of manufactured drama. The writers are simply lost without George's source material, and they devolved back into base television tropes and tisms.

WackySwacky

I defend a lot of stuff in the final seasons, but I agree with the shitty writing on this. It's a terrible plan. "Let's send a small group of some of the most important people in Westeros to do the most dangerous mission"

Conzi

Ahh Uncle Benjin. Disappears in season 1 and comes back in 2 different episodes in the last 3 seasons, both times to just pop the fuck out of nowhere to save the day. TRASH writing. TRASH. Also so they stood on that rock for how long? Gendry ran all the way back to the wall, lets be generous and say it only took him 1 day. They had to send a raven ALL the way to dragonstone, which established in earlier seasons would have taken several days to a week. Then Dany had to fly all the way back north, we dont know how fast dragons fly but it took at least another day probably 2-3. TRASH. Great show, I still enjoy the rewatches, but I always stop well before I hit this point.

My_Cousin_Mose

I've been waiting to comment until this episode, as I feel it really marks the downshift in writing these last two seasons were infamous for. Benjen Stark's death was unnecessary and stupid: if that horse could outrun the dead with him and Bran and Meera riding it, it damn sure could have with him and Jon. Also, Jon's bending of the knee went against his character arc, against what he told his people and Sansa he was going to Dragonstone to do, as well as against what he'd been telling Daenerys up to that point, and there was zero reason for him to do so: she had already committed to the war against the dead without demanding he bend the knee. One of the complaints I always had about the last three seasons of the show was the really stupid decisions they wrote for Jon, and that accelerated with this episode. And Natalie is completely correct in terms of hats: how the hell does anyone survive in near-artic conditions without head covering? In terms of the zombie polar bear, the show has shown that fire kills, but takes a little time, while death is instant from dragon glass or Valyrian steel, so why they couldn't finish it while it was munching the first guy in the circle is another issue. As far as I'm concerned, the problems are with the writing and the rush to end the series. As others have said, this episode could easily have been two, and the season would have made more sense with ten. Even with its flaws however, I still think this is one of television's greatest series. But I'll save that for the end.

Baron Imhoof

Now you are DarkJokester. Or was that a dark joke? For me the first 2 are truly must watch shows. But Luke Cage... Wanda Vision leaps around it.

Valar Dohaeris

i do a full dance routine

Ben Gilshenan

i just watched the boys and now i want nat to watch it soo bad

Ben Gilshenan

I don't know I think 121 eps is a bit too many for a commitment at 2 a week it's over a year.

Paul Gibbons

The production

Valar Dohaeris

Do we have enough"Lost" lovers/haters to make it the next show to watch? It might be a fun rewatch.

Valar Dohaeris

"Jon is having a Titanic level exp right now." That was a hilarious line you said LOL

Josiah Placencia

Nat.... re: your stabbing questions...they have dragon glass weapons now

Tom Fehr

So who made all those chains they use to drag the dragon out of the ice? :)

Matthew Shaver

Get some help bud.

Crwn

"I just think this plan was stupid." "You've got a better plan? Now's the time." -James T. Kirk

Michael G. Munz

I think benjen couldnt get past the wall anyway so he decided to just give up then and stall for time, silly ending though to his story

Simon Bauer

Gods, I can't wait for Nat's reaction to the finale... she should give us a bonus reaction this week because there are only 6 episodes left after that one (2/week).

Ellis Hugh

Anyone remember what twitter was like when this episode came out? It was during the winter olympics, and the official US account tweeted something about the Knight King joining their team. A lot of funny memes were going around

Jordan Harpst

They used the fire to cauterize the wound. Even the ancients knew that doing so would stop bleeding and prevent infections, although it hurts like hell.

Alan Kobb

I'm not sure if someone answered but the other reason Daenerys was staring at Jon's chest was because she finally saw what Ser Davos said a few episodes back, that Jon took a knife in the heart.

Lisa Tosti

The reason they went "one by one" to the centre of the ice was the weight of all of them at once broke the ice last time

Connor Ellis

He cauterized the wound with the sword so he wouldn't bleed out

Connor Ellis

Nat, Dani gave up the ability to have children in the deal she made with the witch. When she tried to save Drogo

Isaiah Mesa

If you don't do the finger waving during the intro along with Natalie, you aren't a fan <3 jk

Do Nothing Club

I think Nat hit the nail on the head. It feels like 10 episodes compressed into 7, with less room for the leisurely-paced character scenes from prior seasons. The fast-travel isn't *that* egregious, when you consider they're using the two fastest modes of travel: Sea and Dragon Flight. (Which, if you remember s7e4, Drogon flies at a speed faster than Dothraki at full gallop.) All in all, I think this season shows the REAL heroes of this world are the Raven Trainers. Those birds are amazing.

NotlobParrot

The reason the final 2 seasons were cut short was because the show runners (David and Dan) wanted to move on to do Star Wars films which they signed a contract with Disney to do (which didn't actually end up happening but) and HBO didn't want to give the show to someone else in the final seasons. Budget was a slight factor but it wasn't only CGI, a lot of the main cast was getting paid a large amount for each episode by the final season.

chris perry

I mean, we get things are moving a lot faster than they used to at this point. I don't really see the point in bringing it up and talking about it every few minutes every single episode. It's just the norm from here on out as annoying as it is. As for the zombies dying when they get stabbed, it's because the people there are either using dragon glass or Valyrian steel weapons. You can see when Jorah takes out his knives they are both dragon glass, and Jon's sword is Valyrian steel so obviously wights die when they get stabbed. Beric is also using a flaming sword which burns the wights upojn stabbing them.

Dante

After you are done with GOT you should watch The Boys ! Can’t wait to see your reactions to that show 😆🤩

Gerardo

I don't know why people seem to forget this fact,.....They've been jet packing since episode 1....People bitch so much about the pace but they just are looking for something to complain about...Rob made a months long trip to and months again back to King's Landing to get Ned in the 1st two or three episodes...

Guy-on-Couch

On the jet packing point, was just rewatching season one, and within the same episode, Cat makes it from the Vale to Rob’s Camp, Rob gets a letter from King’s Landing and goes from Winterfell to pledged houses to making camp south... so there’s been some jet packing previously. I think maybe it seems faster a times in the later seasons because everything is coming to the end game...

Amanda Sargent

Tormund

Kal-El_138

From what I remember, one of the main reasons these last two seasons were so short was mostly budget related. With everything coming to such epic conclusions, they spent a lot on the quality of the CGI; especially for the dragons, and the dead army. The post production time on the last two seasons too was a big issue; I believe there was quite a long wait in between season 6 and 7 much more than previous seasons.

SmokeAndACoffee

Halfway? There's only one episode left.

Kal-El_138

This has nothing to do with this episode, but I just learned something on YouTube the other day and wanted to share. I learned that The Hound is played by the "yarp" guy on Hot Fuzz. It might have been mentioned here a hundred times already, in which case, here's +1. As you were.

Andrew T

I think also Jorah talking about Jon's kids was telling to his vision of his future. Jorah not planning on having kids that he could pass the sword to? . . . Right. He is in love with Dany. There will never be kids in his future as he is fully devoted to her and she will never have him as a lover/partner. Also Jon was a better son to Jorah's Dad than he ever was. So the sword was better in Jon's hands than his.

Tranquil_Gnome

Couple of things, he used the flaming sword to cauterize (seal up) his wound so he wouldn't bleed to death. Jorah told John to keep Long Claw and pass it to his children, which would lead one to believe that maybe Jorah expects something John doesn't. Also Danny wasn't "checking out" Johns abs she was looking at his stab wounds as she was never sure what Davos meant by John took a knife to the heart for his men and now she knows he literally was stabbed in the heart.

john collins

Nat, "OMG she's definitely in love. She's checking out his Abs." Me, "She seeing his scars from being stabbed! ...and falling in love"

Ryu Kobushi

Was kind of hoping you would drop both episodes 6 and 7 today, just to keep things even going forward. Oh well, next week it is..... :) Again, a good suggestion for the next series after GoT would be The Boys. Going to keep shamelessly lobbying for it. :)

Brian Jones

Deus Ex Machina: Plot device Aristotle was the first to use a Greek term equivalent to the Latin phrase deus ex machina to describe the technique as a device to resolve the plot of tragedies.[8] It is generally deemed undesirable in writing and often implies a lack of creativity on the part of the author. The reasons for this are that it does damage to the story's internal logic and is often so unlikely that it challenges suspension of disbelief, allowing the author to conclude the story with an unlikely ending.

Tadpoleaxe

No stores beyond the wall? What about the Home Depot? You know, the Home Depot that sells giant lengths of industrial chain for pulling dragons out of water?

Tadpoleaxe

While I agree it all happens VERY fast.... And I think we can all agree that is true for both of the last two seasons overall, to be fair Gendry literally ran for the entire day, got there at night, and the raven had all night to fly the message. Then it was well into the next day that Daenerys shows up to rescue them. So over 24 hours total. Likely more like 36. Unbelievable? Meh, maybe.... But not quite as insane as you described it. :)

Brian Jones

What about the Zombie Polar Bear D & D are so proud of? It got stabbed multiple times by dragon glass and survived until it had burned for a while. Why did it survive so long? Because D & D are hack writers who think they don't need to pay attention to continuity or logic. And why a polar bear? In season one, Old Nan talks about the Others having "packs of Ice Spiders big as hounds." Would have been a lot cooler but nope. Big ass dumb Polar Bear Zombie.

Tadpoleaxe

Blue eyes wight dragon! rawr!

MakaPeji

"It's so big! It's so big! It's too big!" That's what she said. :D

Tadpoleaxe

I think the Hound could guess who Tormund was referring to. A woman with blond hair and blue eyes, tallest woman you’ve ever seen almost as tall as you. There is little chance the Hound has met other woman taller then Brienne in his life. Tormund also says she’s at Winterfell. Brienne said to the Hound before they fought that she swore an oath to Catelyn Stark to bring her daughters home. The Hound didn’t believe it at the time but maybe after reflecting he might think Brienne was being honest. And whether she found the daughters or not winterfell is the likely place for her to be if she is pledged by oath to a Stark. So the hound in his head was like this woman’s description matches the woman I fought and she’s in winterfell, it’s a very good guess. And also I doubt the hound forgot her name too quickly. He’s the type of guy who’s probably replayed that fight in this head a milllion times because he would be so pissed he lost

Emma Caulfield

Ok. We're finally here. This is the one episode where no amount of "visual narratives" or "tv time" justifications can distract from the fact that traveling in Westeros has become stupidly fast. From the marathon world record breaking time of Gendry to get back to the wall, to the SMS speed of messages traveling by Ravens, to Daneris dragon flight to beyond the wall, not only to get there, but also find the exact point they are at... Even with them showing each step, it doesn't make it believable. And again, this is not an attempt to discredit the show. I happen to be one of those that likes it all the way and back. It is simple acknowledging that this 2 last seasons would have benefited from more time to develop the stories, as they did in previous ones. And this rushing to the end did no favors to the show as a whole.

Valar Dohaeris

Two things: 1. The reason why the army of the dead is falling now and not rising again is the use of obsidian, fire, and valerian steel. Those three things are the only weapons that work besides destroying the body beyond any ability to animate. 2. This is the conversation that I picture in my head when Jon gets back to the wall. Individual one "Blow the horn a rider is back." Individual two blows horn. Individual one "Holy shit! I think that is Jon Snow! How is he alive?!" Individual two "Fuck that! I want to know where he got a horse! They didn't leave on horses, did they?" Individual one "No, they didn't, and I don't think there are any horse and saddle stores beyond the wall." Individual two "Does this count as one miracle or two?" Individual one "Damned if I know. I am just glad he is on our side."

Elvenwitch

Yeah, they should have just fired D&D when they kicked up a fuss about doing more episodes. Would have really benefited from better creative leads once the book content ran dry.

Laura Thornley

IMO, if this seven-episode season had been expanded to two ten-episode seasons, it would have turned out much better. The action in this episode in particular could have been spread out over three episodes (1: Searching for the Hound's mountain and the initial fight, 2: Fighting retreat over the course of multiple days, 3: last stand and Dany's intervention). Honestly, it doesn't bother me as much as some people, but it's still disappointing. I still can't believe HBO didn't insist on taking longer to do this right.

Allan Rumberger

A fine reaction again Nat. Always remember this episode, and waiting and waiting for Daenerys to show up and save them all. Yeah, it's a shame they never had a camera, or even a phone. They could have texted the picture to Cersei and saved a lot of trouble 😄 Thanks for the awesome Thrones videos this week Nat. Look forward to the finale 💛

Darryl Low

I can see the monologue going through her mind: "Oh! So Ser Davos was being very literal when we met!"

Ilsuk Yang

Fun episode, but can definitely start to see character motivations and plot points all over the place. Also at this point in the show getting into the 'jetpacking' where journeys to different areas that used to last a half-season now take place over the course of a scene. I know they needed to get characters where they wanted heading toward the end of the show, but the pacing ramps up so fast...

Steve J

Are we gonna have to wait a whole week for the finale of the season I don't want to wait

Christopher French

Hi Nat and thanks for your reaction 😄! Congratulation! You have definitely become stronger emotionally it seems, I would have bet that you would be more affected than that by the death of Viseryon, we are never safe from a surprise haha Once again I liked your reaction, a lot of tension and concern from you for the characters 😄, you are the best! I hope you're fine, take care, be safe and stay golden! 💛

Calo Grsf

Totally agree that this happened too fast

Crash Raynor

"Checking out his abs." More like checking out the stab wounds through his body.

Luis Torrefranca

Also you mention that it seemed like before you couldn't just stab a wight and kill it, you needed fire. The reason why they were dropping so many wights with simple stabs is because they were using dragonglass weapons, except for the hammer the Hound was using. Those weapons instantly kill wights. You can even see a wight get back up after the Hound hits it with the warhammer, but no other wights get back up.

Mithroll

In the Thoros scene Beric cauterized his wound with the heat of his flaming sword, to stop the bleeding.

Mithroll

There's some interesting fan theories on this (mostly book related), with the main one being that Dany actually died in the fire and was resurrected via the combination of the blood and fire magic. I don't think I agree with it, but it still shows how good conversation can be made about the series and its more subtle elements.

Laura Thornley

Natalie, Dany's period stopped after her first son was born. If she doesn't have a cycle, she doesn't have children.

Kelsey Roberts

Happy thrones Thursday Nat hope you managed to get tissues at least you havnt got an episode 9 to worry about so there is that 😀 anyways let the fun beyond the wall begin 💛

Ian

Happy Thursday, Natalie! 😊 I'm getting this downloaded right now so that I can watch it later tonight. Looks like we're already halfway through this season already Looking forward to watching this reaction this evening. Have a great day today! 😊 Until the next video, Stay Golden! 💛

Randee Carreno

I already have my defence for why the Night King hit Visarion and not Drogon
