FIRST TIME WATCHING (I think): Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Happy Feature Friday!

Wow...this movie was awesome. So sweet and simple in its message yet so intricate in its set design and cinematic imagery. I enjoyed this so much and am eager to hear your thoughts as well!

As always, thank you for your support. Until the next one, take care and stay golden :)

Perfect person to lure out and murder…. I like the way your brain works nat

jamie jones

One of the the few Jim Carrey dramatic performances 👀 I hadn’t seen this but now I have, time for The Number 23! 😂

Daniel McGuinness

Do you enjoy anything? Everytime I see you it’s always spouting the most negative opinion

Daniel McGuinness

im not crying, youre crying

Joey Johansen

Great film and great reaction, Nat. Joel and Clem's "okay" at the end still gets me even so many years later.

Mike Hell

I haven't seen this movie in a really long time, and I'm glad I watched it again here. I'm sure the answer is yes considering it's a classic but have you seen Good Will Hunting? That would make a fantastic Nat reaction video.

Chris

Michel Gondry is a master of practical effects, in-camera tricks and creative set design. This is definitely his best movie because it gets subsumed into the story. Ugh, I hate Manic Pixie Dream Girl discourse. I’ll spare you my rant but Eternal Sunshine is an explicit critique of the male tendency to project their fantasies onto women. Clem calls it out years before the trope was ever named.

Jacob King

This is the situation where you can erase someone from a person's mind but not their feelings for them. This is another movie that shows Jim Carey can act. Not just random impersonations. Another movie Natalie should watch is Her 2013.

Redrum Sacrament

Well... at least Natalie's reaction added something of value to rewatching this overrated melodrama. I still dislike the parallels of the Forget-Me procedure to brainwashing and su!cide. We as people are defined by our experiences and the choices we make in our lives. Not everything is in our control, but choosing to erase traumatic memories is the COWARD's way out -- just like gitting gone. The protagonists remind me of dumba$$ high schoolers screaming cliches at their parents, as if their juvenile relationships were unique and they'd never love again. Just STFU and grow up. Joel and Clementine were supposed to be grown-ups, but they acted like they'd never get over their breakup. It's just so annoying. The reality is that new and exciting ALWAYS feels more compelling than same and stable, and is far less destructive than dwelling on what you've "lost" and wallowing in self-pity. Just move on to the next best thing and have fun. The whole point of the Forget-Me procedure is to exploit mentally ill people for profit, reinforcing their self-destructive delusion that they'd never get over their ex-love -- while demonstrating that when robbed of their memories, they're doomed to repeat the same mistakes! Joel and Clementine didn't need a memory-meddling machine, they needed a good friend to kick their ass out their front door and drag them to a bar to meet someone new. It would've been that simple. Other than that fundamental flaw, I appreciate the sci-fi-ish twist on the trope-y romantic melodrama movie. But TBH I'd rather watch "Benjamin Button" or "The Shape of Water" or even "Passengers". At least in those films, one of the love interests was unique or literally the only game in town, so it was understandable why they couldn't just move on with someone else.

Rod Reavern

This was a first watch for me. I enjoyed it, and watching it with you. It was an inside out ouside down movie. Funny, intriguing, and utimately sweet.

Steve

Nat, what're "poppers"? We're not ALL winos...

Keith Jacobsen

Hey Natalie, thanks for the reaction. I really love this movie, it's over 20 years old (the car wasn't that old, it was from '94!) but it looks better than most things coming out today. Charlie Kaufman wrote this and he worked on a bunch of other great movies that might be worth reacting to, like Being John Malkovich, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Synecdoche and my favorite: Adaptation. They all have similar reality-bending qualities coupled with just a stellar cast & acting.

Berry

This is easily in my top 5 movies of all time, possibly my favorite. it was my first Charlie Kaufman film, and I think it's my favorite of his, even though it's probably his most approachable.

Alexander Vasquez

First time (I think) <-- I see what you did there...

Troy B.

I love this film and have rewatched it at least a dozen times. I think the wildest trivia from this movie was that Nicholas Cage, having just worked with Gondry on Adaptation, was the first choice to play Joel. I’m sure the movie would’ve been great, but I think a Nic Cage Eternal Sunshine would’ve felt like an entirely different story.

mojo shivers

Great film. Love having an excuse to rewatch this 😊

Shaun Bloom

Might just be my favorite modern love story. "I can't see anything I don't like about you." "But you will, you will think of things and I'll get bored with you and feel trapped because that's what happens with me." "Okay." "Okay." Good fucking shit.

Steve Mercier

I think the movie sets up the "manic pixie dream girl" trope from the outset, but really smartly subverts it by making Clementine an actual three-dimensional character with her own desires and flaws. She essentially says it herself; she's not a concept. Part of Joel's journey is acknowledging that she isn't the solution to his life, she's her own person.

Joel

One of my favorite films ever. Haven't watched it in years, but it still totally holds up on rewatch. The filmmaking and editing is just incredible.

K.N.

Underrated movie

C. J. Ramirez

"Is she snorting poppers?" Lmao

Kevin Farrell

I remember seeing this in the movie theater in college and not being the same when I left. It's one of my top 5 favorite movies

Lisa Tosti

Happy Feature Friday Nat. Saw this movie at the cinema when it first came out and I've not seen it since. I vaguely remember the plot. Going to be interesting re-visiting it with you. I know people are going to prove me wrong, but I think this could be the first Kate Winslet movie we have watched on your channel 🤔😅 This one was a challenge to keep synced with you. I was watching on Amazon Prime as well, but the UK version ran a good 5 minutes faster than your copy by the end ha ha Jim and Kate make an inspired pairing. This movie was so different from their usual work. So clever and unique. Really enjoyed your reaction today Nat, and you're outro was so relatable for everyone. Thanks for all your great work this week. Looking forward to the streams later 💛
