2020-09-29 07:57:14 +0000 UTCThe way that Ul described her love for Ultear @43:20 is perfect. I know it bothers some, but that's the reason Mashima writes characters like Mest into his story, because he can see the beauty that he voiced through Ul in that moment.

2020-09-28 17:18:09 +0000 UTCSPOILERS FOR THE FINAL SEASON BELOW! Well, this is arguably the best season of the series. The power of friendship and emotion is fine, but, it shouldn't be able to accomplish everything. That just makes it boring and stale. If friendship makes you invincible, then there was never any point in moving beyond the first chapter. You can't build a villain up above other villains just to have them felled the same way as the villains below them. Lucy summoning the Spirit King was a good example of how to use emotion. Her love for her friends and spirits ultimately saved everyone, but it did require sacrifice, and it wasn't all powerful. Compare that to "that fight" from the final season, which had no sacrifice and was WAY too powerful, and you know what I mean.

That should give you another hint that magic power ups do come from emotions. The Power of Friendship is intentional people. It's part of the humor and slice of life that makes this anime unique.

Brain wanted to use Ultear as part of his Oracion Seis but gave up on her and left just before she destroyed the laboratory. So I think that means Ultear has technically been part of every single major story arc.
