Actually, apparently in the light novel, Tanya wasn't portrayed to be as brutal as in the anime. In the particular episode where they had to wipe out the militia, Tanya was more sympathetic towards her troops and the tough circumstances in the light novel. Episode 8 was almost entirely anime-original and carves a new path that differs from the light novel.
