Coming up - October and beyond on Redshirt Cinema Club

Hello lovely Redshirt listeners, Nath here. I hope you're all doing well, sitting or floating in zero G comfortably.

As we approach the end of our Alien: Earth series (an experiment in following along with a show being aired week by week, which the three of us have enjoyed) we've started to plan what we'll be up to for the rest of the year. This we can reveal in a few stages, each one slightly less detailed than the previous as we stretch into the future...

So first of all, we have our 100th episode coming up on the 1st of October. This happens to be a bonus episode, so our celebration will be a tight knit affair for just us Commanders. To do justice to this occasion we have decided to fill the biggest gap in our viewing so far - 2001: A Space Odyssey. Join us for that next week.

And then for the rest of October, the guys have given me free reign to plot in some Halloween-related content. My mind works very literally, so my first thought was "how about... Halloween?" And my second thought was "how about a whole John Carpenter series leading up to Halloween?" This would have the advantage of starting with 2001 parody Dark Star, which we have discussed several times as a precursor to Alien, as well as proper, proper genre movies like Assault On Precinct 13 and Escape From New York, all while culminating in another sci-fi classic that has hovered over our podcast from almost the beginning - The Thing.

Our October John Carpenter series:
Dark Star - 6/10/25
Assault On Precinct 13 - 13/10/25
Bonus - The Fog - 15/10/25
Halloween - 20/10/25
Escape From New York - 27/10/25
Bonus - Prince Of Darkness - 29/10/25
The Thing - 3/11/25

...we've had to tinker a little with the chronological order to keep Bonus eps feeling Bonus-y, and leave us with the big films on regular Monday pods.

Then we'll just have time for another month-long series before our end of year run begins. Dave has just turned 40, and in honour of the death of his hopes and dreams, we've opted to do another Best Of The Year series, this time for his birth year of 1985. We'll be doing a top 10, individual picks, and watching the film you vote as the community favourite.

As we hit December two very exciting things will happen.

First, we'll begin our Star Wars series. Now, we don't know how long we'll do this podcast. We started it to show Rob Star Trek, and it's fair to say we really fell in love with it when we watched The Lord Of The Rings last Christmas. But one thing we do know is that we've been waiting almost a full year to give Star Wars the same full-on, festive treatment. We'll be watching the original trilogy in the run up to Christmas day, and - if I can convince the guys - following up with the prequel trilogy to give us the full LOTR-to-The Hobbit experience.

And finally, speaking of The Lord Of The Rings, one thing that we were asked about a great deal last year was doing a LOTR fan commentary - to record us three watching along and enjoying the films. It's against our nature to speak while watching movies, but as we loved watching them last year and sharing that joy with you, this is something we'll be trying and aiming to put out around Christmas. The current plan is for this to be available through Patreon as a one-off purchasable thing. Another experiment, with exact details tbc.

Thank you to everyone for your support and enthusiasm this year! Oh! We also owe you an issue of The Civilian Observer, and we won't forget it. I hope you're looking forward to what's coming up before the end of 2025. After this run of episodes we'll take stock and see how we feel about next year - whether to make any changes, what to watch, how to keep us and you having fun.

Cheers all!

Nath

Nice line up. The Thing is amazing. Looking forward guys. Currently Im watching Mobland and I'm completely hooked. I've been a fan of Guy Ritchie. I was wondering if you guys would interested be doing any of his stuff. I think he's a great film makers and he has a unique way of storytelling.

Great line up. The Thing is my favourite horror movie. I also love prince of darkness. 1985 is a good year, I wonder if Nath will try and sneak Ran or Come and See in. We also have Brazil, The Return of the Living Dead, Enemy Mine, Re-Animator, Ghoulies, Police Story, Legend, Commando, Day of the Dead, Breakfast club, Purple rose of Cairo, BTTF, Life-force. Pretty varied selection and some great fun picks.
