Also, Mark could have easily taken out the Kaiju if he had the mentality of a viltrumite, that was kinda the point of that scene. Mark doesn't think like a viltrumite, he doesn't fight to end a threat, he fights to defend and subdue, not to kill, viltrumites go straight for the killshot.
