He wanted to play volley with fantasied vision of it, exclusively about jumping and spiking (mostly due prove height doesn’t completely inhibit and be like the Little Giant). Cause of that and never being part of a actual volley club in middle school and basically just trained spiking alone, he had no experience nor basic skills, and he's paying the price. It's part of his character arc.
