There's nothing wrong with Hinata wanting to get better, but Kageyama is correct when he tells Hinata that he needs to work on his fundamentals with serving and blocking, because he barely even has the basics down. It's understandable that Kageyama thinks Hinata is being too selfish, because to him it seems like Hinata is ignoring working on the areas he is lacking in, and instead trying to improve his own special attack.

He wanted to play volley with fantasied vision of it, exclusively about jumping and spiking (mostly due prove height doesn’t completely inhibit and be like the Little Giant). Cause of that and never being part of a actual volley club in middle school and basically just trained spiking alone, he had no experience nor basic skills, and he's paying the price. It's part of his character arc. This is him trying to make up upon his lack of skills.
