The biggest part of this episode for me is almost lost in the rest. Just the fact that Rei was getting records for Shimada and Gotou at the same time. First, instead of focusing purely on Shimada he started looking past him to the next game against Gotou. Hence Shimada's "You finally look this way." And the second, Rei went straight for Gotou's records. Smith and Gotou hadn't played each other yet, which means he just assumed Smith would lose. Rei obviously wasn't meaning anything malicious by it but it says a lot about Rei's mindset and how he's going to have to come to terms with it the rest of the season.
