2019-04-10 15:38:35 +0000 UTCThe fact that gender (and some related things) are foreign concepts to the gems informs how they view the world around them and this plays a role in the narrative. So, I don't know why they used those particular subs, but as much as I enjoy the reactions, it feels like the wrong choice to use subs that get in the way of properly communicating the known authorial and artistic intent of the mangaka. Plus, those subs seem to be Amazon's ones, but with just a few sentences reworded and the pronouns changed. Might as well just use a direct, unmodified ripped version of Amazon's subs anyway then.

2019-04-09 23:54:25 +0000 UTCNot sure if the subtitles at the bottom are the same ones you're actually watching, but if so they kind of screwed up the pronouns. The Gems are genderless and the use of "singular they" in the official translations was chosen after consultation with the original mangaka. She did have the Gems use some male-leaning terms in Japanese because they were the most neutral options, which led to some confusion by the early fan translators. The official version is only available on Amazon Video, to my knowledge.
