I'll be the first to agree that paranoid readings of people's intentions are childish and harmful. I'll also be the first to point out that the underlying concern that should be expressed is that whenever possible we should reinforce respect of people who are different than us and an attitude of empathy and consideration, especially towards minority groups that are often mistreated by society. To boil that down to "get mad at misgendering a 2d drawing" would hardly be accurate. I can't speak for everyone, just myself. I am not upset when someone misgenders one of the gems in Houseki no Kuni. What upsets me is when people act like there is no value to using neutral pronouns with regards to them, and that referring to them with binary gender pronouns is the same thing. If using gender neutral pronouns makes you uncomfortable, that might be case in point as to why we should try to do so when appropriate, because you will be less alarmed by people in real life who prefer those pronouns, and using them to refer to those people doesn't cost you anything but will improve their lives.

It can effect them to be called by gendered pronouns, especially the ones they were assigned at birth, and so vicariously they would appreciate other non-binary individuals to be referred to with gender neutral pronouns. I for one appreciate that Caleb and Jacob are respecting that. Also for reasons I won't get into, the way that this series deals with gender is very refreshing and I for one just like that it sparks conversations about it. Identity is so very tied up with the core elements of this series.

2019-04-16 19:44:21 +0000 UTCThere's nothing wrong with singular "they/their" in English, people use it all the time without noticing, it's just usually used in cases where the entire identity of the subject is indefinite (e.g. "someone left their coat on the lunch counter"), and not just their gender.

2019-04-16 18:48:39 +0000 UTCTheir designs weren’t quite so feminine in the manga but rather much more androgynous. The anime popped out the butts a bit and slimmed down the torsos. The nature of the gems gender doesn’t particularly matter in the anime at the moment but it does become more relevant later on in the manga so most of the people who are sticklers about it have probably read the manga.

2019-04-16 18:06:52 +0000 UTCI think this is probably a much larger deal in English than in Japanese. In English, third-person singular pronouns like he or she are explicitly gendered. The language don't really deal well with situations where you have to refer to a person whose gender is ambiguous or non-existent, because "it" is reserved for things that are "lower than human" and "they" used as a singular pronoun seems unnatural. On the other hand, while the many, many pronouns in Japanese (especially first-person ones) may have a gendered connotation (boku sounds "masculine" and atashi sounds "feminine", for example), using them outside of that is not grammatically wrong (girls can refer to themselves using boku). The connection between pronouns and gender is a lot more fluid, and so not as big a deal, so to speak.

They are all CLEARLY designed to look like girls and they are all voiced by women. IMO the gems not having gender I think is more intended to be something to remind you that they don't reproduce or have any physically intimate relationships and people have read WAY too much into it and made it a big deal. IDK I'm not the author maybe it was meant as more but it really doesn't feel like it.
