We're coming up on the end of Dororo!! As such we'll be getting this poll done in advance so we all know what's coming next.
This poll's theme is Hotly Requested!
Vote for ANY AND ALL that you would like to see. We always take note of which shows get 2nd/3rd place. Whichever gets the most votes we will release early access reactions on the Wednesday when Dororo's final episode goes public.

And here we come to the crux of the issue, at least as I see it. Objective criticism does not prevent you from enjoying something. I absolutely adore some of the "objectively bad" shows simply because they click with me on an emotional level, but it doesn't make them good. They are bad and I like them, that's all. And when someone comes around and tells me, that the show is bad because of X, I respond with "yes, but I've liked it because of this, that and the other" or "X didn't bother me that much, so I can overlook it". This is the reason I responded to tsian in the first place. The biggest problem I had with his post, is that he made an objective claim, with which I strongly disagree. If it had been "the best shounen I've seen" or "the best shounen imaginable", or event the cliche one "the best shounen of all time, in my opinion", I'd have no problem with that. There's room for a discussion there. As far as my analysis goes, HxH is indeed the best shounen (battle-shounen, to be precise) of all time (at this point of, well, time), objectively. One Piece may compete, but it's not finished yet and I don't take ongoings into account. Or maybe I haven't seen some amazing masterpiece yet, but I doubt it. This doesn't mean it is perfect and I don't have any criticisms of it.

"Storytelling" here is an all-encompassing term about the work, that looks at how good the said work fulfills its purpose. I believe, that the purpose of any movie or a series is in telling the story, from the starting point to its conclusion. Without that, we'd call any collection of random moving pictures "movies", right? Hence the "storytelling" perspective, that looks at all aspects of the work (plot, characters, direction, music, etc, etc) and assesses how good or bad are they at fulfilling their role in telling a story. And I already see the argument coming, that "good" and "bad" are subjective! No, they aren't, at least not in this context. If a character is inconsistent in their behavior between the scenes and there's no explanation given for that, that is objectively bad. If there are so many jump-cuts in the scene, that it makes it hard to follow on what's going on, it is also objectively bad and "I liked it because it conveyed the frantic nature of the event to me" doesn't invalidate the criticism.

If so, then no, the "taste" is almost entirely subjective and is irrelevant here. What I meant by "defined parameters" is a limit to the scope of the conversation. Of what exactly we are discussing when talking about the work. And they should be defined by the critic beforehand, to avoid bringing unrelated stuff in. If I criticize the story in a book and someone comes in with a counter like "yeah, but the font they used made it really easy to read, so it's not a bad book!", this type of thing (people actually do that, I know a few).

"Objective" does not mean "undisputable truth". Objective critique is the one not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. Subjective, on the other hand, is all about the feelings: how it made you feel, how it relates to your personal experiences and such. You can absolutely make objective statements, that are incorrect because people are not omniscient and you can forget or miss things, or lack the necessary information at the time. That's what discussions are for, to bring other people in and check it out. "All art is entirely subjective" doesn't make any sense and here's why. If this were the case, there would be no meaning in any competitions or awards. What does "best acting" even means in such a world, if everyone can only have a subjective take on it?

Also, I don't really write much in English these days, so I may screw up here and there, feel free to ask for clarifications if some points don't come across as they should. A small caveat: please limit the discussion to TV shows/movies (animated or live-action), games and maybe books. Other art forms don't count. Because the things I'm talking about may apply to music or paintings, for example, but I don't know the first thing about those and won't be able to muster any objective critique on them for the life of me.

And I'm currently in the middle of watching the the original Stein's;Gate, so Im kind of glad 0 didn't win, means I don't have to worry about rushing through them both to catch up in time for their reactions, as I feel this is the kind of anime that you should take your time with, lol.

Same studio, same composer, different but also very well-written characters, and just such a great anime about life, much like Haikyuu. Please please at least don’t forget about it and include it in the future polls as well Q_Q Run With the Wind is terribly underrated and while I watched Demon Slayer as well, I think Run With the Wind is a much better base for interesting discussions and is in general much more thought-provoking.

I would actually be interested to see shows not be replaced and have a focus instead on just 3-4 series at a time. That could help reduce instances where discussions go awry due to a misremembered detail; and, for fans of the longer running shows, it would mean that you would not have to wait literal years for them to catch up.

But imo Dororo was much more guilty of "generic baddie of the week" syndrome than Demon Slayer. Kill a demon, get a body part, rinse, repeat. The concept of Dororo was outstanding but the execution quite lacking. I don't know how many liberties this modern adaptation took but to me the story seems to not stand up to the test of time and many of the episodes seem fillerish. On the other hand Demon Slayer's villains are actually sympathetic (with the exception of the really early ones) and make for conflicts that you get more invested in. The main cast of characters is hit or miss, love them or hate them, but the actors' performances are all top-notch. So I hope that clears things up. I didn't leave out the characters or story because I thought they were bad. I just don't think Dororo's are any better. Thus the separating factor is the technical aspects you mentioned.
