The OVA takes place after. Its only 3 episodes. But it does more backstory to Chise's childhood.

As far as the OVAs go, I watched them before watching the main show and I don't feel like I was majorly spoiled on anything. But I did read that a great time to watch them is after episode 8. So if you guys want to watch them, that would be a good time to :D

Magic is so common in this series but they portray it in such a way that none of the mysticism is robbed from it. It gives me tingles, and I'm definitely just fanboying about it at this point.

Though as a note, I watched the OVA episodes first, and it didn't spoil anything for the main series. I'd recommend checking them out. They're just a prequel for the series, so aside from a character we won't meet for a bit, there's nothing in the actual main series you wouldn't encounter in the first episode.
