Actually back row players can go the front. What they cannot do is jump while being in the front. So basically a back row player can't take part in a block, and can only attack if he jumps behind the attack line as Shy said. I'm enphasizing the difference bacause the setter, for instance, can move to the front to set the ball even if he is in a back row rotation, as long as he doesn't jump.

Agreed! As shocking as it is that haikyuu reaches such levels of hype so early on, the real kicker is how the hype just keeps getting bigger and better as the series goes on. There's a reason why it's known as hypekyu by the anime community.

oh and about the "formation" discussion, the rotation decides who is on the front line and who's in the back. when asahi is on the back line, he has to jump before the (attack) line to spike it (as you've seen this ep). When kageyama is on the back line (REARGUARD), he can't dump (hit it straight down). Tsukki can't block when he's on the back line. (eg, when kageyama is in the front row (VANGUARD), there are only two spikers he can toss to, unless there is also someone doing back attack ). so, in one rotation, there can only be 3 blockers.

If you are the back row, you cannot go to the front of the court. That's why Asahi's back attack makes point to jump from just before the line. (the line that separates the back and front).
