Chise really does go a long way to making this show great. I love how they handle her character. This isn't the type of character that's always handled well in other anime or manga, and sometimes this type of character is even fetishized with the whole "docile, attaches herself to one person" thing. But in this story that is actively called out as unhealthy, and her journey through her trauma is handled in such a caring, human way. I'd love to talk about this more but it'd be getting into spoiler territory. Another day!

2018-03-17 01:39:32 +0000 UTCThis show inspired me to get "An Encyclopedia of Fairies" by Katharine Briggs and it's been nice to see how faithful the show is to fairie lore. There are of course, as with anything based in folklore, some liberties taken (ariels, as far as I've seen, are an invention of the story). But a great deal of it is pulled from actual faerie myth and I'm really fond of that. Fairy ointment is one of those things, and to answer your question on why they would need it: It's for hybrid fairies, those with half human parentage. They don't have the natural ability to see other fairies, so they need the ointment.
