Hey guys back at it again!
This time i'll be talking about blocking and why it's important to have a double blocker or triple blocker.
I kno the show talks about blocking and how to do Kill and Soft block, but not why or how.
It's one of the toughest jobs honestly and exhausting since it's a role where you sometimes touch the ball if you are a short player, but for someone like Tsuki it's probably more fun. I say that since i'm a short player and if I try to block I hardly get any touch or block since I can't reach up there. But sometimes I get lucky and land a soft block, and really lucky with a kill.
So why is it important for a double block more than a single. Seems obvious as in more width of blocking but there's more to it. So when a spiker is attempting to spike, he/she has a different spots to hit, either STRAIGHT where the ball goes directly in front of him or ANGLE where he hits at an angle. At this point the blocker who is in front of him blocks STRAIGHT or tries to, they don't usually block angle because the middle blocker comes in for that.
So back to Karasuno's team. The 3 people in the front row are LEFT MIDDLE and RIGHT. If the opposing team is hitting from their left side, Karasuno's RIGHT side will block the STRAIGHT, but now the spiker knows that the blocker in front of him is blocking STRAIGHT knowing this he decides to spike ANGLE. SO KARASUNO'S MIDDLE BLOCKER (Hinata/Tsuki) will come in and assist their RIGHT blocker. WIth this double block, the options for the spiker is very limited as where he can hit. At this point he has the option to feint (in USA we call it a "dink" or "short"), try to ANGLE their shot as hard as he could since the block is very wide, or how the Little Giant and Hinata did in this episode, wipe the ball (in USA we call it a "tool" as in you used them to score the point. They were "tooled"). Same process on the LEFT side blocker of. If the opposing team right side is spiking, KARASUNO's LEFT side would block STRAIGHT and KARASUNO's MIDDLE BLOCKER (Hinata/Tsuki) would help block ANGLE.
Then with a triple blocker, it gets even worse because the width of the block is too long, so you have to get reallllly lucky with a strong ANGLE shot or no option left but to feint the ball over. Or of course do a wipe like Hinata did in this episode. This is probably why Tsuki wasn't trying to hard before, since he would always had to help as a MIDDLE BLOCKER. Also Hinata as well since he would always be jumping around.
So in short, spikers aim to hit STRAIGHT or ANGLE. The blockers attempt to limit the course of the spikers hit. If spiker jumps, expect to see 2 blockers. The one in front of the spiker will block STRAIGHT and the MIDDLE blocker would attempt to block the spikers ANGLE. So what about the 3rd player who is in the front row you might be asking? If the guys who jumps for STRAIGHT blocks and the MIDDLE help aim block ANGLE, what does the third player do? They basically help defend the court with the 3 in the back row. If the spiker does manage to spike a strong angle, that third player should be there to assist defending. Also, most team don't triple block UNLESS they know who is going to spike, just like in episode 24 season 1 where Hinata got blocked by Trunip head, Iwazumi, and Kuinimi because Owiaka knew Kageyama would set Hinata.
Thanks again, See you guys next week for Cogs.

Some anime-only watchers are getting spoiled :( Please remove this comment, because they might only want to find out about this when Season 4 comes out.

Eh, I'm not usually one to be super sensitive about spoilers, but I don't think you need to tell them this. I didn't know about this, and most people who don't follow Japanese volleyball seasons didn't know about this until it was brought up, BUT it didn't hinder/ruin anyone's enjoyment of it. It's just like how no one's telling them about the actual structure of the Spring Tournament (whether it's single elimination or not), but we just let them speculate, because it's fun, and they really like theorizing.

It's all the more fun to see the OP and be hyped. They can only speculate but when people point out specific parts is what makes it spoilery. Just let them enjoy the awesome new OP ( and me their reaction XD )

I think people are just too sensitive to intro/outro spoilers. Personally I do not think any of HQ's intro has spoiler. I have the same idea to the rest of HXH but too many people insist there are important spoilers...tbh I am kinda disappointed with starting watching the intro until the second half of the arc. Hope this won't happen to HQ as the second opening is the best to me through all the 3 seasons.

I don’t think it’s that spoilery either way, I mean it’ll mostly just warm things up for more predictions and discussions, so I don’t really see a big problem. If anything, it’s the same level as with BNHA season 3 opening (perhaps even less spoilery). And yeah, I wanna see their reaction to it as well x)

Ikr? Granted Bokuto says his name in a pretty memorable way so it makes sense haha.

I mean I guess it's a bit spoilery but I personally just want them to look at and geek out cause the opening is amazing! lol, it didn't ruin the fun for me cause the music made me hype each time to just watch it. Granted they do see the teams but it's more so glimpses then anything, well except for the last team haha.

Now that you guys are getting close to the 2nd opening of season 2, I don't think that you should watch it because it has spoilers - I mean that you can see what teams they'll be playing with on the tournament and it may ruin the fun. I need some people to back me up on this one though.

What a great discussion! I marked so many things to bring up.
About Kageyama becoming the best player in the world — that could actually happen (while keeping in mind that choosing the “best volleyball player in the world” is fairly difficult and not often done). A national player (think it was Yanagida Masahiro) spoke about it in the official Haikyuu documentary, saying that Kageyama could probably get into a national team with those crazy skills of his. Speaking of Kageyama’s skills, we were truly blessed with that dance of his. Food might just be the only thing he likes (or cares lots about) apart from volleyball, and it’s so funny seeing him trying to blend in.
Kuroo’s reasons why he wants to make the battle of the trash heap a reality are so nice. His gestures and the tone of his voice give away his excuses about it being practice for him, and Tsukki’s and HInata’s faces kind of indicate that they don’t buy it either lol. I also absolutely adore the third gym interactions in general. That lovely scene with Kuroo reassuring Hinata that they would continue the next day warmed my heart so much. Hinata’s and Bokuto’s (goober #4) dynamics are just a joy, they keep each other’s fire going in the best ways possible, and it’s so good to watch their shenanigans.
Ushiwaka’s actually Ushijima’s nickname, his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi :D But many call him Ushiwaka (Oikawa and Hinata certainly do).
And the thing Jacob mentioned about Haikyuu not really having antagonists — it’s kind of uncanny how just a couple of hours ago I saw a tweet with similar content, which I’m gonna quote: “Haikyuu shines as a show because it absolutely destroys the concept of needing to have a bad guy/good guy to root for a character and have antagonists that work. Their character diversity, the way they focus on rivals as worthy opponents and take the time to develop them both personally and athletically is truly one of a kind. The show deals with issues of inadequacy, jealousy, feeling undermined...without ever fully laying blame on anyone. It's amazing.”
A thousand times yes to this. This aspect of Haikyuu is one of the most unique ones and also the one that makes it so, so incredible.
And Haikyuu getting better all the time? I’ve been in the fandom for over 4 years, and I’ve been asking myself just how can almost every chapter be better than the previous one the entire time. It really is incredible.
Thanks for an awesome discussion!
