I don't really have the time at the moment to write a long comment for this (but once again, great commentary), but I just have to say that one of my favorite moments of this episode is just. Joseph coming home and being sad and Cartaphilus is sitting there KNITTING. That image just makes me happy somehow, even if it's a sad moment. The idea of Cartaphilus waiting alone at home for Joseph, and KNITTING of all things.
