I didn't know that about Ennoshita's name. :0 That's amazing and just makes him all the more endearing. I agree with everything you said. This is just so beautiful an episode in such a fantastic show.

This episode really is - ok I need to stop I say that for every episode XD This one is definitely a beautifully done one and for all the reasons you stated and more. I really love how they handled Yamaguchi's character, there's just a realism to these guys and the little touches are so perfect and express so much! Love it so much!

The next OP (i believe) has a special bit added in the next episode. I'm curious if you will catch it, you probably will.

I loved how they paralleled Yamaguchi's struggles with Ennoshita's. I particularly like how they made Yamaguchi confront his fears again in this episode. Typically, when a character experiences a setback, you know that the next time they confront the same obstacle again, they're most likely to succeed. It's like how at this point, everyone who expects a rematch between Karasuno vs. Seijo is most likely going to bet on Karasuno. However, they didn't do that with Yamaguchi here. They showed that it does take time to overcome mental blocks and that even if you've resolved yourself to become better, sometimes, your resolve buckles once you're seeing it again face to face. They also did that with Ennoshita's nervousness shown through his thoughts ("It's the same as a practice match..." "I can't replace Daichi-san"), while he resolves himself to do his best ("Bring it!") Those contradictory yet incredibly relatable struggles are, as they say, mmmmMmmm! Perfection.
Which brings me to my main point -- this show is so good at bringing up relevant character development to create a thematic focus for a particular section of the story. This time it explores anxiety with Yamaguchi and Ennoshita, but we've seen it before. It's like how the theme of passion was brought up during the training camp. The team's passion became the catalyst for Tsukki's story, because it brought back memories of his brother failing (paralleled with Karasuno's loss) but still deciding to continue with volleyball (paralleled with Karasuno's determination to improve). I like how even though side characters get "dumped" with development, it doesn't feel sudden, because it fits in thematically with what the show is dealing with at the moment, plus they also throw in some more subtle foreshadowing beforehand (for those who were paying attention).
Gotta love Haikyuu. Can't wait for these guys to get to season 3!

When I was younger my coach made me play setter because I was the most experienced, but still bad. I remember one match where we were winning at first but then began losing. I started making a lot of mistakes and on a crucial point I missed a toss (it slipped through my fingers) I remember the coach yelling at me specifically from outside the court in front of everyone. My team tried to lighten up my mood but I was just gone. And they couldn't switch me out as I was the only decent setter. We lost and after that I skipped practice for 6 months. One day the coach called me and asked me to come back. I was too ashamed to go back so that call was really clutch. Now I'm a libero and a setter when our main setter can't make it. Ukai yelling at Yamaguchi despite them winning the set was so real. Ennoshits telling Ukai that Yamaguchi knows is also huge because Yamaguchi ran away by doing a normal, safe serve. Just like Ennoshita ran. And because Enno doesn't wabt Yamaguchi to quit and feel the same he protected hi. Ennoshita for future captain ❤

The whole episode is just so clever! The brought up the importance of Daichi, showed us what Ennoshita can do, how the "weak-willed" feels, etc.
Tanaka said Ennoshita is the person who can understand all different kinds of people. And that's why he said to Ukai "I think he (Yamaguchi) knows it more than anyone else".

“The struggles of the weak-willed”, a really nice name for this episode imo.
The intro was indeed clever, with an awesome transition, highlighting Daichi’s role, and then showing Karasuno looking worriedly at their fallen captain :”) Glad that you noticed the crow metaphor in the opening! (I also wonder if another small detail gets added in this episode, I forgot and I can’t check now lol.) It’s quite a nice touch. Setting up Ennoshita was really great, especially since they actually show it to us. And man, the transitions between his own flashbacks using his hands are just amazing and give me so much feels.
I can’t check right now, but if I’m not mistaken, in the early stages of the qualifiers they can play up to 2 games per day, one in the morning and one after lunch. They probably play only once per day starting with the semifinals or around that.
Since you’ve noted Ennoshita’s thank you to Nishinoya, who said that he’d guard wider, I feel like I should really stress the fact that the word he used isn’t even quite a thank you: it’s “warui”, which can be translated as “I’m sorry”, or “my fault”. “Thank you” isn’t quite wrong, I’m just highlighting it to show you the undertone of the statement.
Can’t help but agree on Oikawa’s voice and commentary. I’d love to hear his comment more Karasuno’s games for the sass alone lol.
Aaand another interesting fact you made me think about when you mentioned the unsung hero: Chikara means “strength” in Japanese, but Ennoshita’s full name comes from the expression "en no shita no chikara mochi", which describes a person who does a thankless task or who works without expecting credit. The author puts an incredible amount of thought in coming up with the characters’ names.
Thanks for the great discussion!

They showed the bracket early on (it's not translated into English, unfortunately) and it shows that Dateko will be playing Aoba Johsai next. Whoever wins that match will play the winner of Karasuno vs Wakunan match, which will take place tomorrow. The Dateko vs Aoba Johsai match and Karasuno vs Wakunan match are happening today, that's why Aone said to Hinata that he will win against Karasuno tomorrow.

They said in episode at the start of the tournament that Seijoh and Shiratorizawa are on different courts (Shiratorizawa on A and Seijoh on B). so they would have to play each other in the finals. Dont know which court Karasuno is on(probably b court from all the OP and ED hyping a Seijoh rematch.
