Yeah, I'm glad Jacob isn't discouraged. He rarely interrupts Caleb when Caleb's doing his thing unless he feels strongly about something, so he should also be given the space to throw out his wackiest ideas or interpretations even if it's wrong or whatever without Caleb shooting it down too hard (unless it's a fact that's been confirmed).

I don't get where Jacob got the idea that they were going to have to sacrifice innocent bystanders. Sacrificing and not being able to save people are two very different things. And also what development of Zeno and Netero suggested that they were going to lack humanity here? The only development Zeno got in the Phantom Troupe arc clearly showed that he only cared about doing his job, and his job was to separate the King from the Royal Guard and nothing else, which was made clear in this episode.

I think that moment will be clarified for them in episode (117?) when Zeno laments that this is the first time he might have killed someone he wasn't meant to. Hopefully, at any rate.

Regardless, I think it was a good discussion overall. I liked that you saw the symbolism in that black/white scene. I thought the whole sequence was beautiful. I think it's worth mentioning that Meruem was only in emotional turmoil for a second before composing himself quickly. In a previous discussion, you (reasonably, understandably) predicted that he'd go on a rampage if Komugi's in danger, but once again, expectations were subverted yet it didn't seem out of character. This has to be one of my favorite CA episodes (though there are a lot more that top this imo).

I get what you're saying, Jacob, but I think I have to disagree. It's true that we don't have as much material to characterize Zeno, and that so far, he's been shown to be a badass, professional, "I just do my job, no questions asked" type of person. But, rather than this new development going against his characterization, it brings dimensionality to his character, adding a *contradiction* that you both love so much. Why is it that you only love contradictions when it comes to specific characters in shows you like? Here he is, an old, badass assassin, shocked by the humanity shown by a creature he was told to be a monster. It doesn't dispel any of his previous characterization, because Zeno has never been shown to be outright cruel for fun, not like Feitan or whoever. He only kills who he's paid to kill, which is why he stopped fighting Chrollo when the Ten Dons died. It's not too much of a leap that Zeno might actually have some compassion despite his line of work. Heck, the Phantom Troupe has shown humanity. What's wrong with the badass assassin honoring humanity? To be fair, Netero did put a hand up to stop Zeno, so we don't know if he would've acted in that split second.

Its important to realize that up till now Netero and by association Zeno were not thinking of Meruem as a "person' he was an ant that threatened to kill millions without hesitation. But when they actually came face to face with him, he was far more human than expected and his first action in their presence was to save a life, which was unexpected, even with them not really knowing what to expect.

I get what Jacob is saying, it seemed odd to me at first that they would hesitate for the sake of one life. And yes Netero’s plan was to sacrifice the 5 million. The only reason it changed was because Gon and Killua made an executive decision. That said, the moral implications of that specific act (Meruem saving Komugi) are why netero hesitated. It still makes sense.

I mean... the narrator is essentially the voice of god here so if he says that's what Gon thought about then that's the case. I personally love how competent and focused Gon is here. It really shows how fearsome he can be as a Hunter and that he is by no means dumb. He was always pretty quick at thinking on his feet just never wise.
