I always felt her apology at the end was just as much directed towards the family as well as herself for her inability to save Aidan or Gilbert. It finally hit home how she was the recipient of Gilbert's last words and the guilt of surviving contrasts with how grateful Adain's family and Marie are to know what was on his mind in his last moments.

I think the saddest aspect of this episode is the realization that Violet probably killed people similar to Aidan. Just normal people who were conscripted and never even got the chance to have their feelings communicated to their loved ones. In regards to building a connection to Aidan after the fact that he was shot, I feel like that was intentional. You're never going to know the story of a person you kill, which could mirror both Violets and the sniper's perspective when it comes to war. Sniping from a few hundred yards away is a very cold and impersonal way to kill someone, especially when you can only see them through little glass lenses.
