Given the way Subaru blushed like crazy after Garf's apology for "seeing Subaru desperate", I believe it is referencing Garf seeing Subaru's "Love Letter" to Emilia that was scrawled all over the walls of the Trial Chamber; an area that Subaru wasn't expecting anyone else to "come in" and see besides her.

2021-04-12 20:37:05 +0000 UTC"took the place of" probably isn't the best way to put it either though lol The Witch Factor is completely separate from his Gate, it is more that Subaru used it properly for the first time after the Gate was broken. Subaru has a Broken Gate, and the Sloth Witch Factor, they exist exclusively of one another. The former prevents Subaru from using magic traditionally, the latter lets him use his newly named Invisible Providence. (just wanted to help clear things up for the bros :P)

2021-04-12 18:49:29 +0000 UTCWhat broke during the shamak was Subarus gate. He was ordered by Felix not to use magic for 2months to heal his gate. Subaru's "thank you" was adressed to his gate, that it helped him to cast shamak for one last time. What happened after that was that the witch factor took the place of the gate. In other words, from this point on he can't use magic anymore by himself. This part is kinda bad executed in the anime to be honest.
