I just want to add to something you said at the beginning, the manga doesn't just go past the anime, the manga is completely different than the anime's ending. No spoilers of course, but in the anime, they bring in a new character for the ending that never exists in the manga. People's theory is that they bring this character in to wrap up the show because they never planned to make a second season.
