EARLY ACCESS Fruits Basket Season 1 Episode 7 Reaction

Comments

This episode is fantastic and so heartbreaking. I already had the feeling that there was some toxic stuff going on with the Soma family but even having seen the old anime adaption I had forgotten how bad it was. Just seeing that 1st flashback of Aikito freaking out almost looking like a demon about the possible marriage is horrifying but it does have the 1st mention of the curse. Also even if he’s a super interesting character I think all of us very much agree with the sentiment of “fuck Aikito” because good God he’s abusive both physically and emotionally. Something I love which I think makes you feel the emotions even more is the whole relationship between Hattori and Kana especially the beauty of how it’s described especially the seasons metaphor. I definitely felt that same frustration that no one was blaming Aikito but totally had the same thought it had something to do with the curse we don’t know about you although I think it also is because of the type of person H is. And then the episode once again shows why Tohru is just the best with how much love and caring she shows towards others and how it seems to bring a little bit of spring back to H. H is 1 of my favorite characters his story in this episode is just so powerful and emotional and even if he should worry about himself as well it really shows the type of person he is more concerned with his former love finding happiness and being happy about that rather than anything else. Finally this show does such a good job at balancing humor and serious emotional stuff. Great reaction. :-) <3

There’s only pain

Now that I think about almost every character (dare to say even our sweet FML too) is twisted in their own way. Obvi some characters are more than others.

Akito’s my fav character in Furuba - incredibly well-written, poignant, and interesting. That said, 100% fuck Akito

Killikat

Exactly, I forget if they will say it in the anime but in the manga they mention that person with the year of the dragon used to turn into an actual dragon a long time ago

MJ

Yeah, it's fun to see them go into theories but I wish they talked a bit more about the episode content too.

BeesKnees

Yeah, the name for seahorse is 竜の落とし子 meaning dragon's child

Nadya Coles

Glad you noticed the sus of Shigure. Weird vibes galore lol.

Yup fuck Akito. Even to the end of the story I still hated Akito. Anyway, I love Hatori (my favorite) but this VA just doesn’t fit him. The VA from the first anime (Kazuhiko Inoue) was better. Rewatching this episode now… I didn’t realize how repetitive it was in parts. There’s Momiji telling the story with flashbacks included and then telling the story again with Hatori’s flashbacks. I like leitmotifs but it was honestly a little overdone in this episode.

T_T this ep is just too powerful. Hatori's past with Kana just hits so hard. It gets me tearing up everytime. Black Oda pages huh, FB def has that tier of emotional stories in more than 50% of these eps. Prepare ur bodies :) def no need to worry about shitting on Akito :>

As people have mentioned, Hatori is a dragon and looks to be a sea dragon. These are actual animals in the family Syngnathidae, which includes pipefish, sea horses, and sea dragons. There are multiple species of sea dragon, as well. That's why he made the comment to Kana about killing a real sea horse or sea dragon if you put it into the bath water, as they are primarily salt water animals and can't handle fresh water, which the bath would be. Also, as others have mentioned there is a bit of cultural context here as well.

Now we wait for another best boy to be introduced. Bicycles are the best way to get around😉

BriBri

Thank you for the awesome reaction! I'm so looking forward to the future discussions, Fruits Basket is such a gem and I can't wait to see it one more time together with you.

Rina

Kind of surprised you didn't go more into the actual content of the episode, would have loved to hear your thoughts on the actual stuff between Kana, Hatori and Hatori's reactions/perceptions of things.

Heather Sanders

This episode always hurts, even if you know what's coming DX

LuxFlux

Caleb is right, Hatori is the dragon but due to physical limitations, he transforms into a "sea dragon" good job!

Hatori is the year of the dragon. In Japan, I heard that they call them Sea dragons I think it was because Dragons are mythical beings and one other reason I should not disclose lol.

Hatori is actually the dragon, in japan sea horses are sometimes called "baby dragons"
