Native Japanese here. Japanese 1st person pronouns (ore, watashi, boku, etc) are not strictly gendered like English 3rd person pronouns (she, he, etc). Also it is common for Japanese people to go by many different pronouns depending on who they're are around, how they want to present themselves, how they're feeling at the time, etc. Although 95% of those who use "ore" are men and it is rare to see a female go by that pronoun, it doesn't automatically mean they actually identify as male. Haruhi jokes about going by "ore" only because it makes it easier to blend in with the guys when using a pronoun that many guys use, similar to how it makes it easy to pretend to be a dude by wearing men's clothing. That being said, I prefer to use they/them pronouns for Haruhi since it sounds more like they identify as Agender (not identifying with any gender at all).

I remember watching this first episode a long time ago, dubbed, and hated it. Never gave the series a second chance, although I have watched clips of it and thought that it was just dumb and also kinda making fun or light of gay/transgender issues. But after seeing it in the original language, it is amazing how more nuanced the performances are, which gives it a completely different feel.

Sorry, but I don't think I'll be joining y'all for this one. I could never get into Ouran High School Host Club because I just found the idea of a bunch of high school kids acting as courtesans really off-putting. The first episode was good because I liked the light bulb motif, but as the show continued, I didn't see the romance or comedy as anything special.

I hope they will add some variety to the polls. Most of the stuff they watch or put in the polls is highschool/slice of life drama/comedy. Sure there's that stereotype that all anime is about highschool, but still.

Due to the fact that the Host Club is an independently managed club, all profits go directly back into the club's budget for future events, as well as practical upkeep. Each host collects points based on how much profit they reel in. Kyoya and Tamaki take the club's reputation seriously at all times. The hosts in the club do not get paid individually as ALL 6 of them are already ridiculously RICH. BUT they do get money from the customers (students) in a different way and this will be explained by Kyoya (Vice President) in future episodes. So happy you guys are finally reacting to this gold anime. ALSO HARUHI can be referred as a girl (SHE), she did say that her gender awareness is not rlly as strong as other normal ppl and she just discoevered being pampered by other girls that's why she jokingly said "i should say 'ORE' from now on" lol.

I was so surprised to see this! I'm used to the dub version, but the sub is so full of character! Super excited to see how you react to all the situations that Haruhi and Host Club get into!

This show is so great! I haven't watched the subs before, so I'm trying them out on this rewatch! I'm glad you guys are finally watching it- this show is hilarious and the characters are *chef's kiss* I know you'll love it. Haruhi is canonically ambivalent about gender and doesn't care about pronouns, so I don't think there's a 'wrong' pronoun to use. That being said, as far as I'm aware most people in the fandom use she/her or they/them for Haruhi. The next episode clears things up a bit more if I remember correctly.

i remember hesitating to watch this show when it first came out as i only watch shounen. But seeing that it is made by epic studio BONES, i gave it a try. (i was also suffering from FMA withdrawal and it was the anime that came right after it ended) Never regretted this decision. I hope people will keep an open mind, it's really a cool twist of its perceived genre!

From what I remember, Haruhi does identify as female, at least primarily, but she also just doesn't care enough to correct anyone because she doesn't really see gender as a big deal. So, I'd say use she/her, but they/them might also work.

I haven't watched the whole show in dub, so I might be biased, but I think the sub's just fine. Mamoru really adds to the show.

My thoughts exactly. It's 1 of my favorite anime and once it's finished I will probably consider it in my top 10 anime of all time. Also the Dub is absolutely incredible no matter what any Sub elitists might say and hopefully that's what Caleb and Jacob will watch it in.

I have nothing against subs but this show is better watched in English dub. I initially watched OHSHC subbed but I found the dub experience to be much more enjoyable.
