2020-12-30 18:17:23 +0000 UTCThis is my interpretation, but another reason why Kakeru was angry at the end was because he thought if he trained by himself or with a strong track team, he could have beaten Fujioka. Him running with the amateur level Kansei team dulled his running speed.

While his passion for running is coming back, his team is dragging him down in 2 ways: First, athletes improve by training in a strong team. The members challenge each other to constantly grow and improve. The kansei team is nowhere near competitive level. Kakeru will not improve when he is training in a team many levels below him. Second, Hakone is a team event. All members have to qualify to enter the race. At the point of this episode, the Kansei team has low hopes of qualifying. Even if kakeru is overqualified, he cannot participate if any team member fails to qualify. His ex-classmate made a valid point. His potential is squandered by running in this team.

IRL Prince is clearly running slower than a 10 min mile pace lol, and also the Joji brothers running sub 6 min miles is really really impressive. D1 - D3 schools look to recruit people starting around the 15:30-16:00 5k mark, so these soccer bois ain't far off from getting a US scholarship haha
